Armadillos The word "armadillo" is of Spanish origin and refers to the armor-like covering of these animals. If this is part of the climate change, i will be sad. But the other part of me, the survivor, looks around to see just what plants are enjoying the dry, desert-like climate. One of the disastrous effects of the heat has been the invasion of the garden by the armadillo. I spotted the first armadillo in my first year here at Elixir Farm. We thought it was rare and wonderfully strange. It is not so much fun anymore. As the dryness spread across the hills and finally down into the river bottoms, the armadillo began to look for some food sources and discovered the soft and irrigated terraces where we grow the medicinal plants. At first, say three years ago, there were small holes in the grass and a bit of churning along the sawdust paths. The dog chased them, but never caught any and soon got bored with its lack of success. Then followed a couple of mild winters and boom! A population explosion. Each mother armadillo has four same sex babies with each birth cycle. The stream of 'dillos became unending, unceasing, relentless. We started exterminating, as rare seedlings were tossed night after night. Truly, this was a full-scale assault on the worm population so lovingly tending for years.

Armadillos prolific rooting and burrowing can severely damage lawns and flower-beds. To reduce armadillo damage to your lawn keep watering and fertilization to a minimum. Moist soil and lush vegetation bring earth worms and insect larvae (armadillo candy!) to the surface of the soil. Armadillos can sometimes be enticed to move by watering areas adjacent to the damage site. Armadillos can also be excluded from small areas of extensive damage with fencing at least 2 feet high and with bottom buried at least 18 inches deep. It is lawful for a landowner to live-trap or humanely destroy nuisance armadillos although they are difficult to capture with live traps. All are found exclusively in the New World, although fossils are known from the Eocene of Europe and possibly Asia. In fact, some researchers believe Xenarthrans may have been distributed worldwide in the Cretaceous but evidently became restricted to South America and remained there for most of their history, evolving into numerous groups. The former order name (meaning "lacking teeth") is a misnomer, since only the anteaters lack teeth. In fact, the giant armadillo may have as many as 100 teeth. The name Xenarthra means "strange joint", referring to the extra articulations (called xenarthrales) found between the vertebrae connections. These are insect eaters with degenerate teeth, consuming their prey whole without chewing using long mucus-covered tongues. It is believed that the sloths, anteaters, and armadillos diverged at least 75-80 million years ago and that they are at least as distinct from one another as are carnivores, bats, and primates. Work by Sarich (1985) suggests that the Xenarthra separated from other placental mammals prior to the evolution of the latter into modern orders. Earliest species are known to exist in the Paleocene, 55 million years ago.
