Active Noise Control
One of the less desirable aspects of modern technology has been the generation of unwanted noise. Noise can be produced by manufacturing machinery, from air and fluid flows, from vibrations transmitted within structures, etc. This noise can reduce an individual's ability to receive acoustic information and induce listening fatigue and/or permanent hearing damage. At Berkeley, researchers are focusing on active means to ameliorate the problems of unwanted noise.

Bosco Italia S.p.A., certified with ISO 9000, leader in the industrial sound-proofing sector for the past 20 years,
plans, builds and implements noise reduction and active noise control systems. Bosco Italia produces industrially specific products for soundproofing. All the elements can be used for cladding walls and ceilings or for building silent cabins, screens and other items.
Before carrying out any soundproofing, whether in a working environment of outside it is necessary to be certain that the acoustic results desired will be reached.
In order to ensure this scientifically we have created a new system of acoustic planning called: NOISE CONTROL.
The system uses calculation models which make it possible to determine the effective noise reduction that a given programme will provide.

Active Noise Control FAQ Version 2001-02-27
3. Applications of Active Noise Control
3.1 What are some typical applications for active noise control?
The most successful demonstrations of active control have been for controlling noise in enclosed spaces such as ducts, vehicle cabins, exhaust pipes, and headphones. Note, however, that most demonstrations have not yet made the transition into successful commercial products.
Another application that has seen some commercial success is active mufflers for industrial engine exhaust stacks. Active control mufflers have seen years of service on commercial compressors, generators, and so forth. As unit prices for active automobile mufflers have fallen in recent years, several automobile manufacturers are now considering active mufflers for future production cars. However, if you ask your local new car dealer about the active muffler option on their latest model, you will likely receive a blank stare: no production automobiles feature active mufflers as of this writing.
Large industrial fans have also benefited from active control. Speakers placed around the fan intake or outlet not only reduce low-frequency noise downstream and/or upstream, but they also improve efficiency to such an extent that they pay for themselves within a year or two.

Active noise control works - but where is it going? Larry Riddle Many people have heard of active noise control, but with the exception of headphones, few people have experienced its benefits. Why has this happened? The short answer is cost. Unlike over-hyped technologies, active noise control works. The obstacle has been to make active noise control a cost-effective solution to noise problems. This obstacle has been far more difficult than many people expected. When a technology is more expensive than its benefits are generally worth, only a small market exists for the technology. Now, new technologies are usually expensive to start out. Early users of a technology pay a higher price for being first, with a competitive advantage as the benefit. Technology developers gain valuable experience working with early customers. This experience and know-how yields product improvements that provide more economical solutions for future customers. In this way, the technology spirals into wider and wider use, as the cost for implementation falls. So, what happened to active noise control? Why don't we see active noise control technology in our daily lives? The answer lies in the fact that most consumers are reluctant to pay more than 100 to 2000 dollars for noise reduction solutions. This cost range has been difficult to achieve with effective active solutions. The notable exceptions are noise canceling headphones and some dishwashers.

Miroslav Luke¹ 22 November 2001
Abstract:
This paper deals with the expansion of active noise control systems into a three-dimensional domain. More then one error microphone and speaker is used in order to eliminate an ''unwanted'' disturbance. Three algorithms are described. Multiple Error Least Mean Squares (ME-LMS) algorithm is based upon the minimizing of the mean value of all squares of error signals. Minimax algorithm does almost the same except for not minimizing all squares but only the maximal square of an error signal. Complex Sign Algorithm (CSA) is algorithm in which an error signal is normalized for its absolute value so that a recursion is driven by the sign of an error signal. Simulation of these three algorithms are proved in Matlab.

    1. Introduction
In recent years a classical noise protectors have been complemented with new systems called active noise control system. Active noise control systems are suitable for lower frequencies and classical mechanical noise protectors are used for higher frequencies. So, these two systems, the old and the new one, functioning together can cover very wide frequency band beginning almost at Hz. Active noise control, how does it work? This question may be simply answered by following sentence. An active noise control system measures an input acoustic signal and on the base of this measurement creates another acoustic signal, which is able to cancel the unwanted part of the input signal in the sum of these two acoustic signals.

Music under the hood:
Active Noise Control from Siemens VDO Exploits the Latest Findings of Psychoacoustics Research
In extensive tests, Siemens VDO Automotive has proved that an active control of the engine sound significantly influences the driver's feeling of well-being. At the 23rd International Vienna Motor Symposium, the automotive electronics supplier is showing how selective sound design is made possible with Active Noise Control.

What sounds put the motorist to sleep? What sequences of tones increase a person's feeling of well-being? These are typical questions for psychoacoustics, a relatively new scientific discipline whose findings are increasingly falling on open ears in automobile development. Fundamental studies have shown, for example, that a low but constant sound level is by no means always regarded positively. In fact motorists make similarly high demands on the sound of a good engine as they do when listening to a symphony: Harmonious sequences of tones are particularly popular. But since even the most perfect mechanical design of an engine cannot always rule out dissonance, Siemens VDO has developed a technology that allows the engine sound to be actively influenced - at its source. With Active Noise Control (ANC), the opposing noise is generated by a loudspeaker installed in the air intake system.
Here the engineers at Siemens VDO utilize the physical phenomenon of interference: When two waves meet, their amplitudes are superimposed on one another. If these waves are sound waves, a new tone is generated with a different volume. In extreme cases, the waves cancel one another out completely - and there is silence.

Active Noise and Vibration Control (ANVC)
Active noise control, and its cousin, active vibration control, attempt to cancel an unwanted ``noise'' acoustical wave by injecting an equal-but-opposite ``anti-noise''acoustical wave into the medium, thereby attenuating the wave via destructive interference. The origins of ANVC date back to at least 1936, when P. Leug patented the idea for sound control. It tooks nearly fifty years, however, to obtain what might be called successful ANVC, due to the level of electronic precision required to create an anti-noise signal with any great fidelity. Today, anti-noise headsets abound (I have a very cute set of Sony earbud-style `phones from Japan); these are mostly analog systems. Large-scale quieting requires the use of adaptive digital signal processing technology in all but the simplest acoustic environments. I began my study of ANVC as a summer hire at SRI International, Menlo Park, CA, in 1992. While working in the Acoustics and Radar Technology Laboratory, I helped develop the algorithms and guide software code developers to implement a simple one-input, one-output, one-error active noise control system that illustrated some of the advantages that simple adaptive processing has over more-costly off-line calibration methods. I also developed the multichannel extensions of the algorithms and wrote an internal SRI report that helped others to design a real-time multichannel active noise control system for reverberant room noise control. After joining the University of Utah, I remained as a consultant to SRI, developing normalized LMS algorithms for multichannel active noise control and studying simplified
