  • What is a Functional Assessment? The reauthorized IDEA requires that a functional assessment of a student's behavior be completed prior to the development of a behavioral support/instruction plan. Assessment information includes a variety of sources: formal or informal tests; direct observation; data collection; professional opinions; interviews with staff, parents and students, and other sources of relevant data. A functional analysis is one type of assessment that involves direct observation, formal data collection, and systematic analysis of the data. Functional Analysis developed in 20th century from an idea to treat functions as points in an infinite-dimensional space. This idea allows a miraculously successful use of rich geometric intuition when dealing with functions. It proved to be extremely fruitful in applications to differential equations, harmonic analysis, ergodic theory, group representations, quantum mechanics, economics models.
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to essential results of Functional Analysis and some of its applications. The main prerequisite is the theory of Lebesgue integration, which is necessary mainly to understand examples, but at some moments is used in the theory itself. However the main abstract facts can be understood independently. Proofs of some important basic theorems about Hilbert and Banach spaces (e.g. Hahn-Banach Theorem and Open Mapping Theorem) will be omitted to allow more time for applications of the abstract technique. The principal topics to be covered are:
Basics on operators in Banach and Hilbert spaces and operator topologies.

    What is a Functional Analysis?
A functional analysis is a document that specifies, in some detail, what an automation system is required to do (and not, in general, how it is to do it). A perfect functional analysis would contain all the information necessary for a team of Engineering (or PLC logic) designers and programmers to produce an automation system which functioned as required. Although that is rarely practical, a typical functional analysis should go a long way toward that goal. There are many synonyms for "functional analysis" such as: specification, functional specification, structured analysis, and functional description.

    The Functional Analysis Of Genomes:
Recent Research In The Laboratory Of Dr. Ronald Davis
Ronald J. Sapolsky and Elizabeth A. Winzeler Stanford University School of Medicine As a director of a genome center producing millions of bases of DNA sequence annually, Dr. Ron Davis of Stanford University has always looked far beyond simple strings of A, C, G and T. His varied interests seek to address several basic questions. For what purpose will the sequence be used? Are there more effective ways to use the sequence data? What methods can be developed for adding functional information to the sequence data? How can these new methods harness novel massively parallel technologies of biological analysis? Genomic sequence data does not exist in a vacuum. Genes encode proteins and other nucleic acid products which function in a complex environment both within and between cells. Sequence information outside genes may function as regulators of genes, as well as encode structural and regulatory elements for chromosomal maintenance and replication. Understanding the relationship between biological sequence information, the function of the biomolecules they encode, and the phenotype of the organism will provide a clearer and more comprehensive picture of life processes at the biochemical level. However, even the simplest of cells may encode thousands of gene products, encompassing millions of gene and protein functional interactions. In the past, genes and their products have been studied one at a time or in simple systems both

    Abstract:
Comparisons of predictive fire models with each other or with experimental data have been largely qualitative. By treating these time series curves as infinite-dimensional vectors, a branch of mathematics called functional analysis defines geometrically meaningful operations on the curves. This allows lengths, angles, and distance between two arbitrary curves to be defined and quantified. An introduction to the theory and tools provided by functional analysis is presented. Examples of the application of these tools to fire model evaluation are presented.
