This 980-acre multiple use facility is located in historic Oswego County on a bluff above the lakeshore, offering spectacular views of sunsets on the Lake. With 148 campsites, 26 cabins, camp store and recreation building, the park attracts many visitors who stay for several days. Boat launch sites are located at Pine Grove serve smaller boats, and at nearby Mexico Point offers a boat launch for larger craft. The park has over three miles of hiking trails which also serve snowmobilers and cross country skiers in the winter. Nearby is Port Ontario on the Salmon River, one of the earliest permanent settlements in the area, established in 1836. But by 1877, the once bustling Port Ontario could no longer compete with the City of Oswego to the south at the Mmouth of the Oswego River, and so reverted to a quiet hamlet. The park was first established in 1925 to support recreational access to Lake Ontario by the public. Admininstration buildings, bathouse and parking were completed by 1929. Nicholson (Cornell) It has long been suspected that Mars might be encircled by two faint rings, one originating from each of its moons Phobos and Deimos. Meteoroid impacts into these moons should release clouds of dust that quickly spread out to become rings; similar dust rings have been associate with small inner moons of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. On May 28, 2001 Mars' hypothetical ring plane appeared edge-on to Earth within weeks of its opposition, providing the best Earth-based opportunity to detect these rings in several decades. Using the Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 on HST, we obtained a set of deep exposures off the east and west limbs of Mars to search for these hypothetical rings. We will describe the results of our analysis of this data set, which is currently ongoing. 2. HISTORICAL OVERVIEW 2.1. Inner Ring Structures Ring-like structures in the luminosity distribution of galaxies have been known since photography was applied to nebular research in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The discovery of rings parallels the discovery of spiral structure in the 19th century, because some ring and pseudoring structures in several nearby galaxies were bright enough to have been seen visually with the 1.8-m speculum reflector of Birr Castle Observatory and other telescopes (see Figure 2 ). The accuracy of these early observations was confirmed through photographic observations with the Lick Crossley reflector in 1898-1900 by Keeler (1908) . However, it was Curtis (1918) who first brought attention to a special class of spiral ``nebulae'' where a ring or pseudoring and a bar were characteristic parts of the structure. Four examples, NGC 1300 NGC 1530 NGC 3351 , and NGC 5921 were illustrated in his classic paper, a compendium of descriptions of 762 ``nebulae and clusters'', of which 513 were spirals. He called the ones with a ``band of matter extending diametrically across the inner parts'' and ``whorls'' forming a ``near perfect ring'', `` -type'' spirals, ``for lack of a better name.'' The objects Curtis first described are now recognized as ``barred spirals'', a term coined by
