Program Notes for TCCP's "Baroque Night at the Loft" concerts, February 1 and 2, 2003 A Touch of Barbeque By Karen Sandene As a Fifth Grade band teacher for the Lincoln Public Schools, not only do I teach my students about the mechanics of playing an instrument (tone production, fingerings, what a dead clarinet reed looks like), but I also introduce them to the more “mature” aspects of music: style, ensemble playing, history, composers and so on. This was my intent when a few weeks ago, I handed out a piece of music to my students called, “A Touch of Baroque”. It is a relatively simple work, based upon a theme by some Baroque composer (it’s a little difficult to tell once the trombones and tambourine enter). As I handed the parts out to the Fifth Graders, quite a few students looked at the title and got kind of excited, yet puzzled. They looked up at me and said, “’A Touch of Barbeque!’” “No, kids - it’s ‘A Touch of Baroque’”. In education, they call this a “teachable moment”. Okay, so ten-year-olds don’t know much about classical music these days. This is why school educational programs and community arts organizations are invaluable to the performing arts in this country ? not just to develop the next generation of artists, but to develop the next generation of audiences as well. The Third Chair Chamber Players do our part by providing a wide variety of musical selections in a fun setting, at a price that allows children from all income levels to attend. We hope that the parents and grandparents in the audience bring the children in your families to our classical music concerts (even if you have to bribe them with our cheese and cookies!). By attending our concerts, they may start to understand the difference between Baroque and Barbeque. And, of course, you adults in the audience might pick up on some interesting tidbits of information about classical music, too. Or you might just be content to sit back and listen to the tunes.

Main May 11, 2002 Telemann: Sinfonia Spirituosa Reinhard Goebel's Musica Antique Köln perform string works by Georg Phillip Telemann , in this second release of his string concertos on DG Archiv, (p)2002. I've collected a lot of works by Telemann. I confess. I find his music blander than Bach's, more emotive than Handel, and at its core, German, and even rustic in spots. This CD offers reissues of a 1978 release by MAK of concerti for 4 solo violins without orchestra. They're played here with better recording technology, and probably slightly better renditions. But the steal on the disc is the Orchestral Suie in D major for viola da gamba and strings. What makes this work special is the (return) artist Jaap ter Linden, a founding member of MAK in the 1970s and 1980s. Two other special works are the title concerto and the concerto for solo violin "Die Relinge," some sort of rustic, frog-variant amphibian native to German lands. It makes for interesting tone painting with strings, at least for baroque textures. If I dare say, volume 2 is better than 1, even if all the works aren't as new. MAK has many new personnel, but are sounding quite good, with well-judged tempi and a good string sound.

Database of Baroque Cantatas for Choirs of Any Size This database was originally created for a presentation that I gave at the Association of Lutheran Church Musician's National Conference in 1996. Telemann: His Life and Works Magdeburg (1681) - Hamburg (1767) Telemann was starting to study law in Leipzig. It was here that he founded "Collegium Musicum" (College of Music). He also conducted operas and even performed as an opera singer himself. It was also in 1701 that Telemann met Georg Fredrick Handel and started a good friendship that would be life long. He becomes conductor at the court of Graf Erdmann von Primnitz in Sorau. He also composed the French Overture Suites. He became the concert leader and conductor at the court of Herzog Johann Wilhelm von Sachsen, a duke in Eisenach. He wrote compositions in Church Music, trio sonotas and solo concerts. He became the town musical director in Frankfurt. He was conductor at Barfusserkirche and Katherinenkirche (both churches). Telemann becomes the Godfather of son Carl Phillip Emmanuel. He had the first of over 40 publications published. "Six Sonatas a Violin Soul…" He composed the passion oratorio " Der Fur die Sunde der Welt gemarterte Jesus." This is considered by some the most important oratorio in the first half of the 18 th century.
