Of the three singers, I have no hesitation in saying that Lisa Milne is the most pleasing. She produces a lovely tone and her emotional involvement is just at the right level. This repertoire does not call for wildly dramatic, quasi-operatic singing, any more than it needs the cool classicism appropriate for Haydn and Mozart. Christopher Maltman tends to produce a less attractive tone-colour and excessive vibrato when the volume or pitch is pushed hard and high, but he is often very moving, despite some idiosyncratic diction. John Mark Ainsley is always worth hearing, though I think some may feel that he has been in better voice elsewhere. Words and intonation of all three singers are good. I would have wished to give an unequivocal "three cheers" for this project, but can manage two at the most. Nevertheless, this is an extremely important new release, and merits a place in the collection of any British music enthusiast. You are here: [an error occurred while processing this directive] JOHN LENNON'S IRISH ANCESTORS by Francis Dowling Few of the older generation were impressed with either the on- or off-stage antics of the Beatles when that group exploded on the musical world in the early 1960s. It is likely that the Irish ancestors of John Lennon would have been proud of his achievements, if not neccessarily entertained by his music (being more used to the traditional fiddle-playing, toe-tapping, bodhrán-beating sounds of their native Ireland). The Beatles It is not generally known that the roots of the two most famous members of the famed Liverpool quartet, Lennon and McCartney, lie not in Merseyside but across the stormy waters of the Irish sea in Ireland. 'McCartney' is a Scottish name which has been prominent in north-east Ulster since the mid-seventeenth century. The name Lennon is an anglicised form of ‘O Leannain’ which historically has been common in counties Fermanagh and Galway. It was in Dublin that John Lennon’s grandfather, also John (or Jack), was born in 1858, just eight years after the end of the Great Famine. Following the pattern set by that event, Jack Lennon emigrated to Liverpool to make his fortune. There he met and married Irishwoman Mary Maguire and among their children was Alfred, John Lennon's father. The early deaths of Jack and Mary resulted in their children spending their childhood years in Liverpool orphanages.

This Irish born native pursued his craft, graduating with a music degree from Trinity College, Dublin. He then traveled to the United States and mentored under renowned guitarists Oscar Ghiglia, Angel Romero and David Russel. Following these apprentices, he proceeded to acquire a masters degree at City University in New York and spent several years teaching at Memphis State University before accepting the post of Professor in guitar at the Conservatory of Music at the Dublin Institute of Technology. In addition to the wider classical repertoire, he is genuinely passionate about his country's music. His influence as a teacher has nurtured an entire new generation of gifted young guitarists. His classes at the Dublin Conservatoire are prized for the opportunity to learn from a master guitarist, and for his patience and charming Irish sense of humor, which make the learning experience joyful. Feeley has performed with a variety of orchestras including the American Symphony at Carnegie Hall, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Ulster Orchestra and the Irish Chamber Orchestra, among others. This is in addition to his solo and chamber music concerts. His charming original compositions of Irish music have won him recognition around the world.

Short biography and summaries of orchestral, chamber, piano, organ, and vocal and choral music.
    http://www.hnh.com/composer/ireland.htm
    Ireland, John (1879 - 1962)
A pupil of Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, John Ireland later taught composition at the Royal College, while earning his living for many years as an organist and choirmaster. His music belongs to the 20th century English musical tradition, demonstrating some lyrical affinity with Elgar, while admitting contemporary influences from abroad into a very personal idiom. Orchestral Music Ireland's Piano Concerto and his Concertino pastorale for strings are notable works, with his once popular A London Overture. Other orchestral music includes the prelude The Forgotten Rite and the symphonic rhapsody Mai-Dun. He provided a very competent score for the film The Overlanders. Chamber Music Ireland's chamber music, well crafted as always, includes two Violin Sonatas, the second particularly worthy of attention, followed by a fine Cello Sonata. He left three Piano Trios and a Fantasy Sonata for clarinet and piano. Piano Music Ireland wrote one Piano Sonata and a Sonatina, in addition to a large number of lyrical shorter pieces, many with characteristic titles. Organ Music Organ music by Ireland includes a Capriccio and a Miniature Suite, among other pieces.
