Eichhorn, was born at Frankfort-on-Main on the 4th of June 1753. In 1772 he entered the university of Jena as a theological student. In 1776 he was on the point of abandoning theological pursuits,when the arrival of Griesbach inspired him with new ardour.After having been~successively Repeteni in GOttingen and teacher in the public schools of Dortmund (Westphalia) and Altdorf(Bavaria) ,he was, in 1785, appointed second professor of theology in t,he university of Altdorf, whence he was translated to a chairin Jena ifl 1804, where he succeeded Griesbach in 1812. Here he died on the I7th of February 1826. At Altdorf Gabler published (1791—1793) a new edition, with introduction and notes, of Eichhorn’s Urgesc/iichte; this was followed, two years afterwards, by a supplement entitled Neuer Versuch uber die mosaische Schopfungsgeschichte. GIOVANNI GABRIELI (ca. 1557-1612) Nephew of Composer Andrea Gabrieli Polychoral Technique Created Dynamic Variety As a result of his employment as church organist, Gabrieli wrote several significant works for the organ instrument. He also composed vocal works that utilized two or three choirs, compositions which used different choir and instrumental combinations, and pieces for the instruments alone. These vocal and instrumental works were called canzonas and ricercars . Within these genres, there was musical repetition of themes and melodies, a technique employed to create a prevailing sense of order and purpose. Previously, voices had achieved order through following the text of the music. With instrumental compositions, it was necessary to use another technique for unity, since voices were absent from the piece. The answer came in repetition and with the instruments echoing one another. This echo technique, called antiphony , was then successfully used by future composers. Gabrieli also divided the instruments into groups, much like the choirs who echoed each other in statement and response. In both vocal and instrumental compositions, Gabrieli used a combination of high and low voices for interest as well as alternating soloists with the chorus. A well-known example of the composer’s individual style is the setting of "Jubilate," written in eight parts for double choir and brass. Gabrielie included polychoral technique as a prominent component of his music. Polychoral is a term that denotes the use of multiple choirs in a piece. These choirs would sing in vertically aligned chords, called
