Introduction
I n 1979, my dad bought an audio cassette tape, "The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli" , with the brass players from three orchestras playing the music of Giovanni Gabrieli. I had never heard music like that. I was hooked. In fact, my interest in early music stems from that one tape. I t is because of my love for Gabrieli's music and the lack of readily available information on the internet regarding him, that I have made these pages. : I am not a musicologist nor am I a student or teacher. Therefore inaccuracies may occur. I ask that if you find anything wrong or if you wish to provide further information, especially if you know of any resources beyond the ones I have included, please e-mail me T his site is just the distillation of other's hard work. I am indebted to the scholars and musicians who did all the truly difficult work of researching the source materials and recording the music. My job was easy compared to theirs.

One of the great composers of ceremonial music, Giovanni Gabrieli succeeded his uncle Andrea Gabrieli as organist at St. Mark's in Venice in 1585, where he remained until his death in 1613. His work as a composer represents the height of musical achievement in Renaissance Venice. Giovanni Gabrieli Works Gabrieli continued the traditional cori spezzati techniques developed at St. Mark's during the century, contrasting different groups of singers and instrumentalists and making use of the spacial effects possible in the great basilica. MIDI FILE - Canzona per sonare (2'32'') His eight-part setting of the Jubilate Deo, using double choir and brass, is characteristic of his style of writing. The most widely known of Gabrieli's works is the Sonata pian' e forte, an eight-part composition for two four-part groups of wind instruments included in the Sacrae symphoniae of 1597, with a number of instrumental Canzoni for between six and sixteen parts. The life of Giovanni Gabrieli
I t is not known when Giovanni Gabrieli was born. The entry in the register of his death in 1612 claims that he was 56 or possibly 58 years old. This would place his birth around 1555. It is also not known where he was born. Venice is the likeliest place since this is where he spent most of his life. ( Arnold, 1979 p. 1 ) Giovanni's father was Piero di Fais, a linen weaver, and his mother was Paola Gabrieli. ( Morell, 1999 I t would be impossible to write about the life of Giovanni Gabrieli without including some information about his uncle Andrea Gabrieli. Andrea was Giovanni's earliest musical tutor and seems to have"adopted" Giovanni. Andrea also took care of Giovanni's mother (who was Andrea's sister), his three brothers and his two sisters. ( Morell, 1999 A bout 1562, Andrea went to work in Munich at the court of the Duke of Bavaria. ( Arnold, 1979 p. 2 )The musical atmosphere there, where the lavish celebration of worldly events was emphasized, probably contributed to Andrea's great flowering as a composer. Not long after he returned to Venice he became one of the most popular, productive and published composers of his time. In fact, Andrea returned to Venice to be appointed an organist at the Basilica di San Marco D uring the time Andrea was organist, Venetian ceremonial music, both state and religious became grander in scale. The doge was trying to make his

Giovanni Gabrieli

http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/Strasse/9275/gabrielig.htm
