Writing, General Knowledge, and Postmodern Anthropology
Paul Smith
Paul Smith teaches Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. He is author of Pound Revised (Croom Helm, 1983), and Discerning the Subject (Univ. of Minnesota, 1988), and co-editor with Alice Jardine of Men in Feminism (Methuen, 1987). His next book, Clint Eastwood: A Cultural Production , will appear from Univ. of Minnesota Press in 1990 and a book of his translations of Jean Louis Schefer's work is due from Cambridge Univ. Press in 1990. The meditation on language that has constituted the backbone of the western epistemological tradition has perhaps never been so intense as right now in the era of the postmodern. And it might well be that current attention to the incessant buzz of language hides the fear of some that it's out of control and that the structuralist and poststructuralist attitude to it, since at least as far back as Foucault's " " is somewhat hopeless for the human beings that many of us still dub ourselves. At a time in history where advanced capitalism has commodified the very notion of being almost out of existence, the question of language keeps on re-emerging in new forms, like some kind of irrepressible pest. One effect of the pestilence in the USA is certainly the spectacle now of all disciplines in the humanities scratching away at language based theory, that foreign body left after the visitation of language. Perhaps "scratching away" isn't the right metaphor: most of these disciplines are trying to find ways of negotiating with, accommodating, and sometimes even aspiring to identification with the linguistic scavenger.

FAQ - General 1. Can I use real place names and the names of famous people in my novels?
2. How do I go about using a pen-name? Should I do this?

3. What is 'literary fiction'?

4. Will a writing course help me to get published?
...
5. Do I need a literary agent? How can I find one?
1. Can I use real place names and the names of famous people in my novels?
Care and common sense needs to be exercised here. There are plenty of novels set in various cities all over the world, and you can certainly have your characters walk past a well-known hotel, restaurant or landmark. However, if you have someone murdered in a well-known hotel, the owners probably wouldn’t be too pleased, especially if your hotel manager was easily recognisable in the industry! Ditto with using famous people. Your characters can see them dining in the same restaurant, but when it comes to giving those famous people lines to speak, you’re going a bit too far. As a rule of thumb: Use the names of real cities and restaurants etc—readers often like that ‘Hey, I’ve been there!’ feeling of recognition. But think about giving your characters a fictional street address, and a fictional place of work. Don’t use famous people as anything else than ‘local colour’. (And make sure you don’t defame them.)

rumour around Fokker short bio:

Anton Fokker was born in 1890 in the Dutch colonies. The family moved back to Holland for his education when he was 11, but he was not a very ardent student, and he only made it through his high school exams by means of a self invented crabbing-machine. He went to Germany to train in a car manufacturing school but decided on the spot that he preferred a newly started course in aviation. The one plane he and his class built was crashed by a pilot that couldn't fly and the course crashed with it. Instead of going back he built his own plane with money his father sent him. In 1910 he flew it for the first time; in 1911 he was giving demonstrations and joy-rides in it to make a living. He became an aeroplane manufacturer and show pilot, constantly worried by financial difficulties. Then war broke out and Fokker came into his own. Fokker planes became loved and feared. After the war the Dutch government still hesitated to buy aircraft from Fokker, so he sold the salvaged (German) surplus war production to Russia. A second main Fokker factory opened in America and Fokker became the largest civil aircraft manufacturer of the twenties. The all-metal Douglas DC1 of 1933 meant an end to the Fokker supremacy. A last brilliant stroke was the beautiful twin-tailed G-1 fighter of 1936, nicknamed the Reaper. Fokker died in America in 1939. The company went bankrupt in 1996.

Robert Nagle's Literary and Creative Essays
By Robert Nagle , Last Update: October 1, 2002 Essays about Books About Robert Nagle
  • Gao Xingjian and Soul Mountain is a longish essay I wrote about listening to Gao's Nobel prize-winning essay in my car while driving around Houston. Hans Christian Anderson vs. Kafka describes Anderson's masterful storytelling techniques. Not particularly literary, but I have a page for my idiotprogrammer reviews of computer books and technical books I've been reading recently You can check out my bio , the Imaginaryplanet.net main page or my weblogs (see below) to see what I've been writing. So far the majority of my web writing has been about technology and the web, but I'll soon be adding more nontechnical writing to the web. That will take time, especially as I'm trying to transition my web pages to a content management system. I've written a ton of political essays (especially during the Kosovo crisis. Eventually I plan to put those things on the web.
