PIO Handbook - Chapter Ten Writing for Magazines
Magazines are a somewhat different "animal" than newspapers and broadcasters, but can be equally effective media for promoting Amateur Radio and your group's activities. Two of the biggest differences are that magazines tend to be monthly or even quarterly, rather than daily or weekly; and that they tend to focus on specialized groups of readers rather than the mass "general public." They also tend to be regional or national in scope, and it's much easier to get your story into a national magazine than onto a network newscast. One group of magazines is different from the rest for our purposes. The editors of these magazines don't have to be introduced to Amateur Radio or persuaded that an article about Amateur Radio fits their "mix" of articles and will be of interest to their audience. These magazines, of course, are the Amateur Radio magazines. Despite the fact that their readers already know what ham radio is and why it's important, they can still be a good resource for you to publicize your group's activities or to share lessons you've learned with other amateurs.

Writing For Magazines by Gail Miller
"Writing for magazines" What a title! Many books have been written about magazine writing, and to try to condense everything there is to know here would be futile indeed. Therefore I am going to concentrate on writing short items. Features which can be slotted in between other jobs. We all have half an hour here or there which could be utilised for writing, so here I am going to briefly outline how to present work and give you a few ways to generate ideas for your articles. Presenting your work
Always check who the current editor of the publication you are targeting is. Always enclose an SAE and don't be in too much of a hurry to receive your reply. Magazines work through their mail very slowly and a wait of three or four months to find out if work has been accepted is not out of the ordinary. Submit manuscripts on one side of white A4 paper and print in black ink. Put your name, address and telephone/email number on every page and leave generous margins all around the page. If you use more than one page for your feature, number each page. Double space your work and use around size 12 font size. Generating ideas
If your mind cannot generate ideas to write about, your typing fingers certainly won't be able to get into action. Therefore it is a good idea to start an 'ideas file' which will contain cuttings of anything which you have seen that fires your imagination. Start collecting news snippets, facts and figures, humourous news items - in fact anything that will get your creative juices flowing. Try to talk to as many people as you can in your day to day life and don't be afraid to eavesdrop either! You can pick up some fantastic stories listening in to other people's conversations. No really! Just don't make it too obvious.

"One of the most thorough and usable guidebooks for freelancers of newspaper and magazine features."
Journalism Educator This helpful guidebook for prospective journalists provides the skills needed to be a successful magazine or newspaper feature writer. The Essential Feature , by Vicky Hay, is a writing guide, a file of examples, and a style manual all in one book. The author concentrates on those aspects of nonfiction writing that editors find wanting in beginning journalists: research, accuracy, and the skills needed to tell a story, not just report news. This book tells novice writers what editors want them to know. The Essential Feature explains how to apply research and literary techniques to journalistic writing; provides eight examples of successful prize-winning published articles; combines approaches to writing with practical advice on working as a staff or freelance writer; and supplies publishing tips to give the beginning writer a better understanding of the market. Writing Corner Archives Writing for Magazines A Beginner's Guide by Cheryl Sloan Wray By Carolyn Davis Writing for Magazines - A Beginner’s Guide, by Cheryl Sloan Wray begins with the straight-forward question, "Why do you want to write?", and quickly follows with, "Do you have what it takes?". Although these questions seem rather basic, you will ascertain from the get-go whether or not magazine writing is for you. Wray covers all the basics regarding the types of magazines articles and the extensive fields of magazines available today. She shows you how to analyze style, content and structure of a magazine, as well as finding your niche market. If you find yourself struggling to come up with fresh ideas, you will thoroughly enjoy the section on the art of idea-gathering. Wray says, "In fact, I would bet that if you consciously looked for article ideas all day long, you could have at least a hundred by the end of the day." After reading her book, I believe she is correct! This alone made the book worth the $19.95 I paid for it. In order to achieve your dreams, you must have an action-plan broken down into manageable, specific goals. Wray’s chapter on goal-setting discusses types of goals and guidelines writers should set for themselves daily. The chapters on time-management and writer’s tools will assist you in reaching these goals.

Dan Carlinsky: Why writing for magazines isn't what it used to be
    ASJA, mei 1997
    • In the 1930's two kids just out of high school dreamed up a comic character and sold it to a publisher for $130. Following common practice, the publisher took all rights. The kids were Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The character was Superman. Before television writers and actors realized the huge potential of the rerun market, some signed away the right to earn residuals in exchange for a decent paycheck. It seemed like an okay deal at the time. W.C. Handy and Fats Waller are among the songwriters said to have taken a FLAt $50 or $100 for tunes that became million-dollar hits.
Today, as traditional publishers ride the shock waves of the electronic explosion, many of us who make a living writing books and magazine articles are acting like those earlier creators who didn't know better or didn't believe they had the clout to do better. Through our organizations and as individuals, we need to act fast lest we become the next generation's objects of bemused pity. When it comes to helping themselves to rights, magazine publishers often have a boardinghouse reach. This is surely due in part to the fact that magazine articles generally are unagented. What's more, agents who do handle an occasional magazine contract as a courtesy to a client don't always devote the time needed to read and negotiate all the fine points; for a commission of a few hundred dollars at most, it may not seem worth the effort. Nor do many writers feel themselves positioned to press for better terms in a notoriously lopsided buyer's market.

    Course Description
This course is about writing for magazines, and the best way to learn it is by doing it. In addition to the texts, we will rely on current magazines for story models and topic guidelines. The course will emphasize creative story ideas and lots of writing and revising, and the classroom time will be interactive and collaborative. There will be occasional guest speakers. By the time you finish this course you should have a good sense of how to develop a magazine story from idea to publication. You will sharpen your non-fiction writing skills, from leads to use of quotes to overall story structure, and you will also advance your research and interviewing techniques. You will develop a more sophisticated understanding of how to focus a story for a particular audience and you will have a broad overview of the diversity of magazines being published.
    Course Procedures
We will use the syllabus as a general guideline for the direction of the course (and you should always keep up with the assigned reading), but topics may vary according to the interests of the students in the course and the availability of guest speakers. I will offer regular instruction on the topics listed, but we will also spend much of the class time in discussion and collaborative editing sessions.
