Jaguar Woman and the Wisdom of the Butterfly Tree "Andrews enters a strange, shadowy world. She becomes a jaguar spirit, has visions and dreams, is filled with intense energies ... The goal is to 'become who you are', and grappling with Native American archetypes and spirits is the path the author treads." Publisher Weekly Star Woman: We Are Made from Stars and to the Stars We Must Return You are invited to walk with Lynn Andrews into the American wilderness, to seek selfhood with her in the depths of your own heart, and to soar with her on a magic white horse over a rainbow to the stars ... Now Lynn Andrews again joins two remarkable American Indian medicine women, Agnes Whistling Elk and Ruby Plenty Chiefs, to further her quest for ancient knowledge and to serve as the bridge between two worlds, the primal mind and the white consciousness.

Topics in the History, Literature, Politics and Culture of Israel
Offered: Individual offerings of this course will focus on a specific topic relating to the history, literature, politics and culture of Israel. Students may take the course more than once provided the topic is not the same as in a previous election. In at 2A, War and Peace in Israeli literature (Identical to Hebrew 61). The creation of modern Israel has been dominated by war and efforts to find peace. Israeli literature provides a profound insight into how Israelis have coped with these conflicts, their perceptions of their enemies and their diverse dreams of the future. We shall study the fiction and poetry of the struggle against the British occupation and the War of Independence (Lamdan, Yizhar, Shamir, Guri, Amichai), the surrealist war novellae of Amichai, the creeping self-doubting and angst of Yehoshua and Oz, the anti-war poetic protest movement following the Lebanon War of 1982 and the 1987 Arab Uprising (e.g. Yona Wallach), and a range of literary responses to the Gulf War and the Israel-Palestinian accords. Underlying this all are memories of Holocaust and complex attitudes to Israel's Arab neighbors.

WOMEN'S STUDIES 460
"Balance," from "World Wall," mural by Judy Baca, 1991 G ENDER R ACE, AND N ATURE IN A MERICAN C ULTURE This course teaches students to think critically about the way "nature" and concepts of the "natural" are used politically in American culture. It will take two approaches to exploring the politics of nature. First, how is the idea of the "natural" used to justify social inequalities based on race, class, and gender? Second, what are the consequences for the environment of various American myths about nature? The guiding purpose in the class is to investigate the possibility that these two questions are related and have to be answered together to produce effective strategies for solving environmental problems. A secondary goal of the course is to provide students with the tools to critically evaluate both mainstream and radical environmental discourse. The course will provide practical experience in using interdisciplinary methods and resources, operate within a broad historical sweep from the colonial period to the contemporary, and develop critical thinking and writing skills. We will read a variety of materials, from theoretical analyses, to personal stories, to historical narratives, to political polemics. We will also pay particular attention to intertwining representations of nature, race, gender, sexuality, and class in U.S. popular culture. The course has a prerequisite of Wst 200: Introduction to Women's Studies; CAC 101: Introduction to Comparative American Cultures; or WSt/CAC/SOC 300: Intersections of Race, Class, and Gender. It fulfills General Education requirements for an Intercultural [K] and/or Tier III Capstone course.
