Introduction to Women's Studies - A Guide to Library Resources and Research
Introduction This guide introduces you to some of the information resources accessible from the La Trobe University Library. It is not a comprehensive list, but indicates the range of resources available. It will give you some ideas on where and how to research your essay in the book and journal literature.
Starting Out
Finding books on your topic by searching the Library catalogue Browsing the shelves for relevant books Useful resources for definitions of terms and brief, introductory essays ... Help Starting Out
The first place to start researching your topic is your handout and Look at the topics, questions and readings for each week. The topics and questions should give you an idea of the areas your should consider writing about in your essay/assignment (especially if your essay question seems at first to be general, vague or ambiguous). Don't forget that the references at the back of your readings will be a source of relevant items to chase up in the Library. See if the key authors have written other material on the same or related areas.

Collection Overview
The women's studies collection supports teaching and research needs for students and faculty in the Women's Studies Program . The primary focus of the collection is the study of women in the United States. The collection areas are the history of women in the United States, and current research and discourse carried out in the social sciences and women's studies The Women's Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary minor to undergraduates and places emphasis on the study of women's past and present position in society, analyzing the differences among women as a result of such factors as race, class, religion, and sexuality; the concept of gender relations is also an important emphasis. The range of issues that intersect with gender such as nationalism and post colonialism, health, labor, sexuality, race, family work and welfare are are additional aspects that are studied. The collection mirrors and supports these concerns by providing current teaching and research materials in many formats, including electronic access. Shari Taylor Grove

September 28, 2000
Harriet Laura Martin Room
Library, First Floor
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce Salem State College faculty to new
formats of women's studies materials on the Internet, showing how they might
be incorporated into classroom teaching and research. We will unveil the web site for ENG 417-418, Women in Literature and Film (www.noblenet.org/dennis/gozemba.html), a work in progress. We will demonstrate
and discuss our use of the Speakeasy Cafe for course discussions and the creation
of inquiry assignments in which students engage with primary sources on the web. The Resource Directory following the dynamic syllabi is a selective list of sites for future exploration. It was compiled from recognized women's studies gateway sites at the Association of College and Research Libraries, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Maryland, and the University of Iowa.
