It has long been recognized that special needs students
require an additional set of policies with regard to their

there is hardly a student regular or special needs who
does not require some sort of learning adaptation based
upon one's individual learning styles, abilities and requirements. Among these policies is the concept of assigning different homework duties from the rest of the students in order for the special needs child to better understand the required homework and be able to fully execute the lesson. MOLAS
[Note added March 2001 - the two main sites I used for many of the links in this article, originally written in 1997 have disappeared! I apologize for a number of "dead links" here and I'm searching the web for replacement links. I'll be editing these in soon. Sorry for the inconvenience! - Susan] This kind of article is intriguing to work on since I learn a lot more while finding all the links and images than I imagined I would. One of the things I love about textiles is how they lead to so much more than "just" their technique and how-to information. And, searching for information about molas for this feature lead into some interesting nooks and crannies of the Web. You'll see links here for ethnobotany, matriarchal sociology of the Cuna Indians (sometimes spelled Kuna ) and much more. Textiles are such an integral part of the life of humans that they help us to understand the history and origin of a people and their customs.

    Independent Study and Research
Wherever there are people, there are things worth asking questions about, and such questions and attempts at answering them are the stuff from which original research is made. Majors are encouraged to undertake independent research, either during the school year, over breaks, or at their place of summer employment. Student research projects may be conducted on an independent study format (SOC 250/350), or as part of a collaborative partnership project. Ordinarily, such projects will last one semester. Sociology 250/350 may also be designed as a reading course covering a body of material not contained in any existing course. Normally, the SOC 250/350 results in one (or several) papers. SOC250/350 may be taken for a letter grade or for credit/non-credit. Students often have taken one or more courses in the general field for the proposed topic; coursework at the 200-level is typically a prerequisite for 350 work. The student should submit a short written description of the project and must obtain an instructor's consent to be the 250/350 advisor and that instructor's approval of the topic and plan of work. Faculty in their first year at Wellesley should usually not be asked to be 250/350 advisors. Check the faculty resumes for research interests similar to your own.

I hope they will help focus your attention on the text, get more out of the material, and help prepare you for the test. These are NOT homework questions, and you do NOT need to hand in answers to these questions. Types of Questions on Tests: You will find three main types of questions on the exams, reflecting the three key components of all sciences. You need to be able to answer all three types of questions: a. Questions on concepts (e.g. Bureaucracies, Urbanization, Social Class, Gender). Concepts are the "building block" of any discipline. Questions on concepts are probably the simplest questions on the exams, and there will be a fair number of them on the test, since a key part of learning any discipline is learning the concepts it uses to make sense of the phenomena it studies. b. Questions on theories (e.g. Theoretical debates on: Is urbanization leading to a decline of community? Why is there social inequality? What are the effects of gender inequality?). These are probably the most difficult, but also the most important, questions of the course, since the key element of any science is the theories it offers to explain its subject matter. Theoretical questions tend to answer questions such as "why is something the way it is", and "what causes it to be like that." As you'll see, there is little agreement among sociologists in their answers to these questions, so its up to you to understand the competing explanations (theories) and to assess for yourself which you find more insightful.
