U.S. capital welcomes memorial to military's women
October 18, 1997
Web posted at: 12:04 a.m. EDT (0404 GMT) ARLINGTON, Virginia (CNN) In a city brimming with monuments, a memorial to women in the military is welcome "for the simple reason that our stories have never been told," says Katherine Keating, a former Navy captain who served during World War II. The $21.5 million memorial, ready for dedication Saturday at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, will honor the military service of nearly 2 million American women during conflict and peace, dating back to the Revolutionary War. But another goal, planners say, is to educate a public that knows little about the long and varied history of women in the U.S. armed forces. "It's a given that men served their country," said retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Jeanne Holm, who, in 1973, became the first woman in U.S. history to reach two-star rank.

"It's not considered an obligation of citizenship for women." A unique feature of the memorial will be a computerized database with information by and about military women from the past, present and future.

The Catch-22 of the Sexual Revolution . . . First novel of its kind . . . a military novel with a woman's point of of view . . . .
A military novel, Voluntary Force plunges the reader into the Catch-22 of an ordinary female soldier who struggles for acceptance in the peacetime military. If you have any interest in the sexual revolution and its effect on military history, then this novel will capture your imagination and take you back through a unique American experience.
Title: VOLUNTARY FORCE Genre: Mainstream Fiction (Military Novel) Synopsis: The female protagonist in Voluntary Force , Ashton Sparks, and her WAC peers are transformed into Army officers in three months instead of four years at West Point. The novel plunges the reader into the Catch-22 of an ordinary female officer who struggles for acceptance in the peacetime military. The story is a battle of attrition with her winning by the smallest margin and leaving the battlefield with no more than a hollow victory. Voluntary Force is a character-driven story that will give millions of military women, yesterday's and today's, their own fictional heroine.

Computers and networks reflect their military origins in the aggressive and result, computer use takes on culture and emotional associations hostile to women.

the Military See histories of: See also: History of Computing developed by J. A. N. Lee. From the development of metals in early societies to the creation of the Internet, military ends have often provided the impetus for technological progress. The development of the modern computer is no exception: The electronic computer itself, the integrated circuit and the Internet have all developed out of the American military-industrial complex. Computers and networks reflect their military origins in the aggressive and masculine technical vocabulary associated with them. For example:
    • UNIX mail systems ask users to "kill" files or messages
    • DOS screens ask users to "abort" an attempt
    • WWW servers inform users of "fatal" errors
As a result, computer use takes on culture and emotional associations hostile to women. Computer Industry: See Women in the computer industry in: "Logged on or Left Out?, a special report on women and computing."
The realm of the computer industry seems to hold these associations, too: 69% of computer scientists in the U.S. are male, and women are not entering this field as quickly as they are other professions.

97. 1990 National Board Policy: Women In The Military
Policy adopted by NOW in 1990 regarding women in the military.
http://www.now.org/issues/military/policies/wim.html
WOMEN IN THE MILITARY
WHEREAS , during the Equal Rights Amendment fight, our opposition effectively fanned the flames of fear that women would be drafted and thrown into foxholes in some strange and distant country; and
WHEREAS , with women soldiers playing a more significant role in the Persian Gulf than ever before in our military history, we may have an unprecedented opportunity to bring to an end the long debate over whether women should be in combat, to expand career opportunities for women in the military and to remove what has been an overwhelming obstacle to women's equality and the Equal Rights Amendment; and
WHEREAS , exclusion of women from positions arbitrarily defined as "combat" is based on archaic ideas of what women and men are physically and emotionally capable of doing and outdated ideas of what modern military theory and combat are; and
WHEREAS , the definition of "combat" is ambiguous and varies from branch to branch; armed conflicts since World War II rarely involve readily definable front-lines, rear echelon units may be a 30 second missile flight from the so-called front-line, and in modern military theory rear support troops are destroyed first before assaulting those up front; and
WHEREAS , the combat exclusion does not protect women; 80-90% of the casualties in conflicts since World War II have been civilians and the majority have been women and children; women and children are subjected to violence every day on the streets and in our homes; rather than creating restrictions on women under the guise and illusion of protection, we would all be better protected by seeking diplomatic, economic and other non-violent ways to resolve international differences other than armed conflict; and
