The Military Service Academies
It literally took an act of Congress to open the United States Military Academies to women. In 1975, then President Ford, signed Public Law 94-106 requiring the services to open the hallowed halls of West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy to women. In the fall of 1976 female cadets began their education and military orientation as the "Class of '80" became the first coed class. When those first classes graduated in 1980 of the 327 women who began, 217 graduated - a whopping 66%. The transition wasn't easy, and the lingering male chauvinist attitude didn't help matters but for the most part women cadets succeeded in ignoring the micro-minded while acing the academics. Academic failure was twice as high for the men.
Women met challenges, and showed they were capable of handling the rigorous physical and military courses. Respect for the abilities of women slowly emerged within the academies and surprisingly the hallowed halls remained in tact and were not painted pink or adorned with Martha Stewart decor.
In 1989, Kristin M. Baker, Class of 1990, was the first female cadet named Brigade Commander and the first woman to command the West Point Corps of Cadets.

A Turning Point in History
From the April Newsletter - Worldwide WAMM
by Marie Braun, WAMM As the U.S. proceeds down a warpath that could drastically change the relationships between nations of the world for the foreseeable future, one is reminded of the observation of Lord Acton: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Despite the overwhelming opposition of most people and governments of the world to war on Iraq, and despite serious questions about the morality, legality, and political implications of such a war, the U.S. seems determined to carry out a military action that is unprecedented in the history of civilized nations. The Country Of Our Dreams
Let it be true that we shall find
The country of our dreams;
And walk the moorlans overtwuned,
And Drink from crystal streams The barque that we have set adrift
Is nearly out of sight;
But may our days be not so swift
To savour as we might. Alone we dwell, just you and I,
And lie upon the heath;
Our drooping lids succumb to sky,
And this we sleep beneath. The meadow and the hill we claim, The forest and the beach; The country of our dreams became A land within our reach. by: Terri Russell I recieved this today, by surprise for sure. For the poem above. May 3, 2001 From Caring Women of the Web, Thank you so much. I am so proud. I remember the Vietnam Vets. My brother served there with 101st airbourne. Welcome home guys, it's been long overdue. I salute you! You will never be forgotten.

WAC's arriving at Normandy 1944
While Hitler was skulking around Europe pretending to save Germany the erstwhile military minds in Washington were stonewalling womens organizations, patriotic pressures, and anyone who had the temerity to suggest that women should be in the military. The politicians, in typical gerrymandering fashion, made flimsy promises of considering an auxiliary of sorts while quietly hoping it would all go away and secretly trying to figure out how to stop it. Fortunately Congresswoman Edith Nourse Rogers and Eleanor Roosevelt thought otherwise.
Congresswoman Rogers introduced a bill on May 28 th, 1941, to establish a Women's Army Auxiliary Corps for service with the Army of the United States. By virtue of its being an auxiliary corps there was no hint of full military status for women.
The bill was dissected, bisected, stalled, lost, amended, sandbagged,
and all but trashed until General George C. Marshall took an interest.
While several government departments cooperated, the Bureau of the Budget continued to stall in spite of pressure from Mrs. Roosevelt, General Marshall and other interested parties and groups. By late November of 1941 there was still no definitive action. At this point General Marshall literally ordered the War Department to create a womens corps. An incident in the Pacific reinforced this order.
Query due to the Pearl Harbor movie: Were military women at Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941?

Women's Internet Information Network presents:
American Women Spies

The gathering of information about one's enemy has been around since prehistoric times. From clan head to marauding conqueror, leaders needed to know the strengths and weaknesses of their enemies. Through the ages spying developed into an art form and no one was better at it than women. In the early days of the Revolution many Philadelphia women passed key information along to General Washington at Valley Forge. Lydia Barrington Darragh spied on the British and informed American officers. She made several trips from the city to Washington's headquarters, one in which she concealed an American uniform from the British. All up and down the east coast women spied for the cause. Ann Trotter Bailey carried messages across enemy territory in 1774. Sarah Bradlee Fulton ,sometimes called the "mother of the Boston Tea Party," delivered dispatches through enemy lines. Emily Geiger rode 50 miles through British and Tory enemy territory to deliver a message to General Sumter. During the Civil War Belle Boyd spied for the Confederacy by carrying important letters and papers across enemy lines. She was imprisoned in a Union prison for her espionage activities. Ironically, before the war ended, Belle Boyd married a Captain Harding, a Union naval officer.

    It seems to be common belief that if a Norwegian girl is unmarried at the age of 30, she's obliged to enroll for military service.

    andersja's blog
    ... because the Internet changes your life! Main August 12, 2002 Women in the Norwegian Military Forces Over the weekend I heard something really amusing. It seems to be common belief - at least in some circles (of girls) - that if a Norwegian girl is unmarried at the age of 30, she's obliged to enroll for military service. To me, it sounded more like some hen party joke that had developed into an urban legend, but to be sure (and not to offend too much) I promised to research it. I found no info online. What I did find, however, was a reverse, conclusive statement: Norske kvinner er ikke pålagt alminnelig verneplikt. På frivillig basis kan kvinner søke opptak på Forsvarets skoler, søke om å få gjennomføre førstegangstjeneste med muligheter for befalsutdanning under denne, og søke om verving. Norwegian women are not subject to compulsory military service, but may apply for voluntary service. (Source: norge.no - Kvinner i Forsvaret If you have information to indicate otherwise; leave a comment :-) If you too have head the rumour - leave a comment too - it would be interesting to hear how widespread the rumour is? permanent link Society Comments (5) TrackBack (0) Related Entries

Excerpt: I am a woman who just happens to be a retired Army Reserve First Sergeant. I have shared my experience and expertise in researching, writing, finding a publisher, and "hitting the road" with my books Memories of MaggieMartha Raye: A Legend Spanning Three Wars, Potpourri Of War: Labors of Love Remembered, and The Sarge's Thoughts. I communicated with Martha "Colonel Maggie" Raye from 1988 until her death in 1994. I came to know and love her. I visited her several times in her Bel Air, California home, where I enjoyed her comments as we watched her old movies together, heard the stories, reminisced, and visited with this remarkable woman about her beloved frontline soldiers.
