Gardening Guide to Attract Hummingbirds, Butterflies and Wild Birds
I have spent twenty years gardening with the intention of attracting hummingbirds, wild birds and butterflies. Hopefully, this plant list will help you attract wildlife into your gardens. This is an informal journal that is only meant as a reference tool. Gardening for hummingbirds and butterflies is easy and rewarding. Wild birds, and particularly songbirds, will flock to the insect-rich blooms and the dying seed heads of spent flowers. You can create an abundant food supply and simultaneously build a habitat for your wildlife.

As the human population grows, and the demand for more new houses and roads gradually eats away at our countryside, the value of urban gardens as a safe refuge for wildlife becomes ever more important. There are over a million acres of gardens in Britain, and it doesn't matter whether you have a large garden or just a window ledge, you can create an area that is pleasant to look at, easy to maintain, and attractive to wildlife. How to Attract Wildlife There are just three magic ingredients which any wild creature visiting your garden will be looking for: 1. Food 2. Water 3. Shelter and a place to raise young They can turn an ordinary lifeless backyard into a habitat abounding in songbirds, butterflies, squirrels and a myriad of little creatures. These ingredients probably already exist in your neighborhood. All you need to do is enhance the supply, or add the missing basics to create an active wildlife environment. Read on for more info.

Rhode Island boasts a wide range of habitats. Its rocky shores, sandy beaches, pine woods, hardwood forests, and freshwater wetlands each produce its own palette of native flora. These provide a wealth of diversity, available to enrich the experience of anyone willing to stop and observe the natural world. Many wildflowers are quite showy; many more are less so. However, they are none the less beautiful, expressing the intricacy and balance of Nature's art in all its variety. My aim for this web page is for it to be more than just a collection of pretty pictures. I hope that the comments, links, and images will inspire a deeper love and respect for all of Nature's offspring. Only then will we be truly motivated to protect and preserve them. There are a number of natural areas where wildflowers can be viewed as the seasons change from spring to fall. Parks, refuges, state management areas (in non-hunting season), and private properties offer a wide variety of species to study and photograph. It goes without saying, of course, "take only pictures, leave only footprints", as many habitats are extremely sensitive. And many wildflowers, due to human encroachment, are rare, if not endangered, and are protected by law. Many are federally protected, and every state has its own list of state-protected species. In Rhode Island, the "Christmas Greens" law protects several native plants in addition to those traditionally considered to be holiday decorations. Among these, in Rhode Island, are American Holly

Garden Glossary INTRODUCTION
This glossary has been composed to help both the beginner gardener and those who have been gardening for a while. It's nice to know what everyone's talking about. Gardening : a disease for which there is no cure. Caught by association with other gardeners, reading books, enjoying botanical gardens, watching garden shows or making frequent stops to local nurseries. Also by taking road trips to far away garden spots. No complete treatment, if any at all. Choose the letter of the word you wish to look up:

The Garden in the Woods at New England Wild Flower Society
Bogs and wetland habitats are home to many of New England's most beautiful wild flowers, including the blue flag iris.
Host Michael Weishan joined Bill Cullina, nursery manager and chief propagator at the New England Wild Flower Society, for a wet yet enlightening tour of the Society's "Garden in the Woods." Most people's first inclination when they encounter a wet or boggy area in their yard is to drain it or dry it out. But we say, not so fast: these spaces actually offer the home gardener a great opportunity, just as they are, for a different kind of gardening. As in many other parts of the country, bogs are an important part of the New England landscape. The ones we see today are part of the post-glacial landscape formed when glacial kettle holes filled in with mosses and developed these communities.
Green moss is a prime ingredient of bogs. It can grow out over the surface of a pond, decomposing to peat moss and slowly converting the pond to a bog.
Bogs are nutrient-poor environments. In particular, a northern bog is a habitat with the added difficulty of acidic soil. So the low, dwarflike plants that tend to grow in bogs, like cranberry and pitcher plants, are very well adapted to scavenging what nutrients there are. The more fertile habitats known as wetlands, on the other hand, are characterized by larger plants, such as iris and cattail, that thrive in the water or around its edges.

Introduction
Gardening seems a very innocent pleasure, but for vegetarians it can be a minefield of difficulties! There is a lot of information available about organic growing, but organic is not synonymous with vegetarian. Although organic methods try to prevent damage to the environment, they often necessitate the use of slaughterhouse by-products and other items derived from animal slaughter like blood and bone meal and fish meal. Organic methods also display no qualms about killing so called pests . Many vegetarians want to garden without using animal products and without any unnecessary killing of even the humblest animal. We don't pretend to be laying down definitive rules on this subject but here are a few notes that might help you to manage your garden in a way that causes the minimum of animal suffering.
Fertilisers
Try not to use peat if you can help it. Britain's peat bogs are rapidly disappearing with the consequent destruction of wildlife. Two million tonnes of peat are sold to gardeners every year! Use home-made compost if you can or buy composted forest bark a renewable resource from managed plantations. A new product in garden centres is composted coconut fibre or coir. This consists of the outer husks of coconuts so it is an ecologically acceptable, renewable resource. Trials have shown it performs as well as peat-based compost.

A companion volume to the highly useful and entertaining Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs, this reference book for gardeners in Zones 7 to 11 covers hundreds of species and cultivars, including the author's likes and dislikes.
