Home It is cool to care for nature Birds, bees, butterflies and wild flowers are rapidly disappearing from our countryside. Some farmers have been tempted by Government policies into uprooting hedges, abandoning stubbles, and using ever more effective insecticides and herbicides. Intensive farming has done untold damage to our countryside and wildlife. The wildflowers of our youth have disappeared, and with them the seeds and insects on which the birds depend. The ploughing of winter stubbles has deprived the birds of vital food. Rough headlands and unsprayed pastures are a thing of the past. This is the reason why gardening for wildlife, wild flowers, nature and conservation is so important and even vital for some species Our gardens have become the chief refuge for the wildlife that can adapt. Owls, foxes and even badgers have moved into the towns. It is up to us to provide them with their basic needs. Anyone with a garden, a field or an orchard, however large or small, can come to the rescue by caring for it in a wildlife-friendly way. However all credit is due to those who do farm their land in an environmently acceptable manner and go to great lengths to make sure that their wildlife and wild flowers thrive. Nature depends on our high standards of conservation This site illustrates how one dedicated enthusiast is setting about the task. It shows how 3 acres in Devon (UK) are being transformed into a haven, and a larder of plenty for all wildlife.

A Native Hedgerow

Resources

Philosophy A wildlife garden recreates the habitats found in nature. Its purpose is to provide a haven for creatures of all kinds. No chemicals are used so that the balance of nature is not disturbed. Many native trees and shrubs are planted, because these are attractive to indigenous creatures. For example the oak alone has c. 285 dependent insects. These insects attract birds; birds attract mammals and so a myriad of food chains begin. A wildlife garden will also act as a reservoir for native plants that are rapidly disappearing from the wild. Intensive farming, insensitive development and over-use of herbicides have put many in danger of extinction. Planning Aim to create a woodland glade effect viz. a clear, sunny area in the centre of the garden, surrounded by shrubs and trees. Aim for contrast too, with tall meadow grass and flowers merging with the trees and water feature, with a lawn beside this. Create a corridor for wildlife by having a native hedgerow merging with the meadow, water feature and wood.

GROWING LADY-SLIPPER ORCHIDS                           Garden in the Woods, Framingham, MA Saturday, April 5, 9:30 a.m.–12 noon. There are few wildflowers so beloved and so mysterious as the lady-slipper. Their rarity, elegance, and difficult propagation give them an air of inaccessibility that is somewhat undeserved. We will first discuss their amazing biology and use current research to help dispel some of the myths regarding fungus associations, parasitism, etc. Next, we will see examples of modern lab techniques for raising seedlings which are making the plants available to gardeners as never before. We will also cover some cultivation tips for growing several species in the garden. Finally, each participant will have the opportunity to take home your choice of a mature large yellow or showy lady-slipper as well as a lab-grown Kentucky lady-slipper seedling to nurture into bloom. Instructor: Bill Cullina, NEWFS Nursery Manager and author of The New England Wild Flower Society’s Guide to Growing and Propagating Wildflowers
