Young ( kryoung@mail.utexas.edu Department of Geography, UT-Austin Course goals: Wetlands are unique environments created by the presence of water, special soil conditions, and plants adapted to those wet conditions.  They, along with adjacent floodplains, are productive and biologically diverse in their natural states.  They are also attractive places for the extraction of natural resources or for landscape conversion by people.  This course will use a graduate-student seminar format to examine the current state of knowledge about the ecology and physical geography of wetlands and riparian systems.  There will be coverage of the basics of wetland and stream hydrology, biogeochemistry, biological adaptations, and ecosystem functioning.  In addition, conservation aspects will be examined, including assessment of wetland resources, human impacts, and the potential for ecological restoration.  Examples will be drawn from around the world, with particular emphasis on North and South America. Students will be expected to read the relevant scientific literature, to actively participate in class discussions and one group project, and to write two short prose pieces, plus a longer essay on an individual topic.  Several visitors will also present their research in class; one is Dr. Margaret Stern, (PStern80@aol.com), who is a Visiting Resource Professor funded by LLILAS for this course and who will visit campus in late October.

Bridgham Assistant Professor Ph.D. Duke University Postdoctoral, University of Minnesota, U.S. Department of Energy My diverse research interests are related to the central theme of understanding fundamental mechanisms responsible for ecosystem function and structure. While I am interested in fundamental ecological questions, much of my research is also directly related to applied environmental questions. I also take a mechanistic, highly experimental approach to my research. My current research focuses on biogeochemistry and plant community ecology largely, but not exclusively, in wetlands. Many of these themes are tied together in a current project where we have constructed 54 "mesocosms" (large tanks with intact peat cores, including the vegetation) in northern Minnesota. The mesocosms have a series of water table and soil heating treatments applied to them to directly test the ramifications of climatic perturbations. A full suite of response variables are being measured from microbial ecology, to plant population dynamics, to carbon, nutrient, and energy budgets. It's a marsh, a bog, a salt marsh, a swamp, and so forth. On the other hand there is no consistent definition that everyone can agree on. For example the U.S. Army Corps of Engineeers defines it as: The term "wetlands" means those areas that are inundated or saturated by surface water or groundwater at a frequency and duration sufficient to support, and that under normal circumstances do support, a prevalence of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Wetlands generally include swamps, marshes, bogs, and similar areas. The Fish and Wildlife Service gives the following: "Wetlands are lands transitional between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is covered by shallow water. For purposes of this classification, wetlands must have one or more of the following three attributes: (1) at least periodically, the land supports hydrophytes, (2) the substrate is predominantly undrained hydric soil; and (3) the substrate is non-soil and is saturated with water or covered by shallow water at some time during the growing season of each year." Among scientists, definitions become very complex indeed and there are whole books written about defining wetlands and their classification. Dr. King's research interests are broadly focused on Wetlands Ecology, with particular interest in the restoration and management of wetland systems. He is also interested in wildlife-habitat relationships in wetland systems. He has worked extensively in bottomland hardwood wetlands, particularly in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley. Dr. King was the U.S. Geological Survey's team leader on a large interagency research initiative to quantify the structure and function of southern forested wetlands. Currently, he is directing research to evaluate the effects of sediment deposition on bottomland hardwood forests and associated wildlife resources in West Tennessee. In addition, he developed and continues to participate in studies to evaluate multi-scale habitat relationships of anurans in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley. To date, he has authored or coauthored 11 peer-reviewed publications and has presented numerous papers at professional meetings. Dr. King is a past president of the South Central Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists and currently serves as an Associate Editor of Wetlands Ecology and Management. He is a member of the Society of Wetland Scientists, Ecological Society of America, and The Wildlife Society.
