AFAG acts against protected area tourism development
AFAG has acted against the construction of tourist facilities in Gemile Bay, Fethiye, SW Turkey. The construction is being pursued by Ozyar Ltd., owned by a Turkish MP. Ozyar had pursued court action, seeking an injunction against the Ministry of Culture for its decision to declare the Bay a 1st degree SIT area (a form of protection that strictly prohibits any development or construction). Ozyar is also taking legal action against the Governorship of Mugla for its decision to halt its construction in August 1997.

Ancient Egyptian lived in south-western Sahara
Egypt, History, 4/15/2000 The Egyptian-German archeological mission has realized an important discovery which proves that the ancient Egyptian had lived in the area currently known as the "Great Sea of Sands" in the southwest of Egypt, in the prehistoric period, or five thousands years ago; it had been a rainy area.
Dr. Gaballah Ali Gaballah, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Archeology said that the mission made three trips to the Western Desert "Galf Qabir" southwest Egypt near the junction of the borders of Sudan, Libya and Chad. For his part, Dr. Mohammed Al-Sagheer, head of the Egyptian Monuments Department said that the mission made an archeological survey around the "Mahariq" Plateau and the "Garah" Cave area, where it discovered several tools which had been used by the ancient Egyptian living, then, in those remote areas. The tools included granite pots, fireplaces and human and animal bones.
The mission delineated and defined the Cave with all its drawings and geometrical and decorative designs. In addition, the mission delineated the archeological site in the "Gararah" Valley and drafted a report to be submitted to Dr. Farouk Hosny, Minister of Culture in order to appropriate the budget necessary for the completion of the excavations in the area to find more data on this discovery.

10 October 95: POLISARIO denounces break of cease-fire by moroccan troops.
9 October 95: Polisario demands Security Council to stop King Hassan's Western Sahara trip
The head of the Polisario Front urged the Security Council on Monday to demand that King Hassan II of Morocco abandon plans to visit the disputed territory of Western Sahara in November. In a letter to council President Ibrahim Gambari of Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaziz called the trip, which he said was announced by Morocco's interior minister, "an act of premeditated provocation." "If the announced visit takes place it may bring to none all the efforts so far undertaken within the framework of the settlement plan, " Abdelaziz said.
He added that King Hassan's intention to visit the "occupied territories of Western Sahara" was aimed at undermining the U.N. plan and imposing on the United Nations a list of 100,000 Moroccan citizens as voters," in addition to the human waves of Moroccan citizens already settling in the areas of Western Sahara it has occupied." "To contain the evil of war, avoid the worst for the peoples of Western Sahara, Morocco and those of the region" and safeguard the ongoing U.N. efforts, he said, it was "imperative to demand that King Hassan renounce his plan and change his decision." "The Saharawi government and the Polisario Front reserve the right to retaliate to the new Moroccan agitations whose aim is to perpetuate the fait accompli in Western Sahara."

Western Sahara: Referendum Or War?
A June UN referendum in Western Sahara could have provided the people of Western Sahara a chance to exercise their right to self-determination and independence. It didn't.
Morocco's delaying tactics and the UN's inability to put due pressure on the occupying power have once again prevented the organization of the referendum. Kamal Fadel, the Australian representative of the Western Sahara independence movement the Polisario Front, fears this may lead to a resumption of hostilities, "We believe that if Morocco continues in its current irresponsible and provocative attitude a return to war is inevitable." The referendum was originally to be organised in 1992 but has been delayed many times due to Morocco's fear of losing the referendum. Despite the UN's efforts and the cooperation of Polisario Front, Morocco continues to sabotage the referendum under the pretext that thousands of Moroccan citizens are entitled to take part in the vote. This conflict over voting entitlements is at the core of the disagreement. After a gruelling five-year identification process the UN published lists of those entitled to vote in the referendum in January of this year. Morocco has rejected the results of the voter identification process leading to an indefinite delay in the referendum process.

http://www.greenmanreview.com/sahrauis.html
Various Artists, Sahrauis - The Music of the Western Sahara Around these parts, I'm the official "World Music Guy." I suppose that means I'm the only one with the audacity to judge other culture's music, or that I'm the one who enjoys a musical challenge the most. One aspect that always rubs me about the "World Music" label is the narrow confines that term constitutes in the west: bad Afro-pop, bad Latino pop, reggae, maybe the odd Ravi Shanker or Peruvian pipe disc. Given the incredibly diverse musical styles that exist in this world that manage to avoid many an "ardent" fan, I've never understood why that part of the music media ignores so many wonderful discs that we have access to. Take this tome Sahrauis , for example. Three discs encompass the musical voice of the Sahraoui people, a mix of Berber/Arabic/Black African stock currently fighting for a recognized homeland in the area south of Morocco. Hardly a motherlode for those in control of World Music programming, but this disc is a perfect example of what so many people miss in their states of musical narrow-mindedness or ignorance. The Sahraoui people keep alive ancient musical traditions but live firmly in the modern world. On these discs, melodies thousands of years old mix with traditional instruments, such as the tidinit (a relative of the sintar); with introduced ones, such as guitars; and with modern synth and MIDI technology. The almost jarring juxtaposition of instruments of the past and present detract nothing of the lyrical melodies, strongly Arabic but with strong West Mediterranean undertones. The track "La Selputura" on Disc One combines an ancient song about crossing a grave with an E-Bowed (sustain device) electric guitar, creating something between Brian Eno and the music of Libya. That is followed by "Danza De Smara," with mixes almost Indian percussion styles with Flamenco guitar playing Arabic scales.

Morocco Morocco is the tantalising lower lip on the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, a Muslim land so rich in mystique it seems to hover like a magic carpet somewhere between myth and reality. Tangier, Casablanca, Marrakesh...just the names of these cities and towns should stir a hint of spice in the nostrils of the most geographically challenged. Many Moroccan destinations have been mythologised, and for good reason, but the more jaded traveller may well moan about the extinction of the 'real' Morocco. Still others will extol the country's unique living history, its shimmering light, its art. The truth lies somewhere in between. Morocco is the ideal starting point for the traveller to Africa. An easy hop from Europe, it can be a friendly, hectic and stimulating place to get around in. Open-air markets throughout the country are piled high with rugs, woodwork, and jewellery. The country's prime produce (if you don't count the hashish) is leather - said to be the softest in the world. Travellers to Morocco should avoid political gatherings and demonstrations. Those planning to travel through the disputed territory of Western Sahara should note that armed clashes between the Polisano Front and Moroccan authorities are a possibility. Many areas of the Western Sahara are mined.

Press Statement
Richard Boucher, Spokesman
Washington, DC
February 14, 2003
Western Sahara: Polisario Release of Moroccan POWs
The United States welcomes the February 10th release by the Polisario Front of 100 Moroccan prisoners of war. We want to extend our appreciation to the Government of Spain for its intervention on behalf of the prisoners. As we have said before, the Polisario has an obligation under international humanitarian law to release, without conditions, all remaining Moroccan prisoners captured during the Western Sahara conflict. We call on the Polisario to release the remaining 1160 Moroccan prisoners without delay, all of which have been held for more than a decade after the cessation of hostilities in Western Sahara, and in most instances for more than 20 years. The United States calls on the parties to the Western Sahara dispute to release or account for all those missing or held prisoner since the start of the conflict and to implement confidence building measures, as called for by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1429 and previous resolutions. The United States urges the parties to continue their work to resolve all the issues remaining from this conflict, and to engage seriously with the representatives of the UN Secretary General to achieve a mutually acceptable solution to this long-standing problem.
