Looking forward to your response per e-mail to support@us-africa.org MAIL-US The People A mixture of indigenous Berbers and Arabic tribes the Saharawi peoples' direct ancestors can be traced back to the XVth century when tribes from the Yemen crossed North Africa establishing themselves in the region later to be known as the Western Sahara. The difficult environmental conditions, cold dry winters, scorching summers, low irregular rainfall and rough terrain encouraged the different tribes to coexist and live together. Later, the acceptance of Islam by the berbers and the increasing strength of the arabic culture gave the tribes people a predominantly Arabic bias. As a result of this mixture of tribes the Saharawi people and culture was born. The struggles of the twentieth century against Spain, Morocco and Mauritania saw a strong Saharawi nationalism develop.

El Aaiun - Culture Like the liberation movements in other parts of Africa, especially the former Portuguese colonies, POLISARIO has had to concern itself not only with the armed struggle, but also with the sheer survival of the population and, as such, has had to organize food distribution, medical assistance, the construction of schools and hospitals, literacy courses and, in general, lay the groundwork for the future liberated society. Recognition that the POLISARIO Front does indeed represent the Saharawi people has led a majority of African States to recognize it. But the Saharawis have gone one step further. On 27 February 1976, the day the last Spanish soldier left the territory, the y proclaimed at Bir Lahlou the creation of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic. Since then the Republic has been recognized by numerous African and other States. The Republic was proclaimed on 27 February to emphasize that the Saharawi people had affirmed their sovereignty and that it was no longer possible for a new colonisation to take place. Since then, further shape has been given to the institutions of the Republic, in particular at the Third General Congress of POLISARIO, which was held in August 1976.Western Sahara is rich in mineral deposits, especially phosphates, uranium, iron, natural gas and oil. The fishing grounds are also very rich. There are large French and Spanish economic in terests in the area, which have important strategic aspects (the oil routes).

The images in this gallery were created by young Western Saharan refugees (Saharawis) living in refugee camps in Algeria. Their paintings reflect the vivid colors of the desert.
Why are the children refugees?
Western Sahara, the former Spanish colony, is the last African colonized country still waiting for independence. Since 1973 the Polisario Front has fought for independence. In 1975 Morocco and Mauritania invaded the country. Most of the civilian population fled to Algeria, living in refugee camps. The Polisario Front proclaimed the existence of the SADR, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in February 1976. After 18 years of war, the United Nations Peace Plan for Western Sahara was adopted in 1991 by the Security Council. The United Nations mission for the referendum in Western Sahara, MINURSO (Misión de las Naciones Unidas para el Referendum del Sahara Occidental), has been monitoring a cease-fire since September 6, 1991 and preparing the self determination referendum.
Thanks to Tower Hamlets Humanities Education Centre for contributing the children's paintings, which it displays on its
