Everything Welsh on the Web INTRODUCTION Before we explore the Welsh Language, come with me on a journey which will pass to you the essence of CYMRU (Wales). If you are of Welsh Descent, I hope this essence will lead you on a path of healthy pride in who you are and, in time, that you will also be able to pass that same essence on to your friends and others. If you are not descended from the Welsh people, I hope this journey will give you an idea of who we are and why we have so much pride in our heritage. CYMRU is the nation on the west coast of Britain. It is one of the seven Celtic nations (Ireland, Scotland, Mann, Cornwalls, Brittany, Galacia, and Wales). We are the original people who settled Britain. We were dispossessed of our lands and forced west by the invading Saxons. Our right to our own nation has been opposed by the Romans, the Saxons, the Normans, and now the British. But, as a people we have survived and have flourished in many ways. To be Welsh, it is not good enough to hang out a flag, celebrate St. David's Day by sending your Grandmother daffodils, cook Leeks, or have several recordings of choirs or folk tunes. To be Welsh means having a pride in your heritage; it means knowing your language (at least a little of it); it means knowing your history with your own heroes; it means knowing your literature and your music; it means knowing your ancient religious faith, and, it means embracing the very essence of what it is to be a child of CYMRU.

There are occasional postings in English which discuss learners' questions or Welsh grammar questions. WELSH-L is also a good resource for intermediate or advanced learners of Welsh, who may find that following the list improves their language skills. If you are just beginning to learn Welsh, you would probably prefer the list Cymraeg-L , which is for beginners and contains a lot of English (with a glossary or translation for each Welsh posting). The National Assembly for Wales

The Welsh language is a fundamental aspect of Welsh culture. Welsh is taught in all schools in Wales, there is a Welsh language media and government legislation to support the development of the language. About twenty per cent of the population use Welsh and the number is growing The British Council in Wales is assisting with the development of the Welsh language in the only overseas Welsh speaking community, in Chubut Province, Argentina. The Welsh Language Project in Argentina is funded by the National Assembly for Wales and managed by the British Council. The Welsh Language Teaching Centre and the Wales Argentina Society are also members of the Management Committee established to run the project The project, which has been in existence since 1997, has been extended for three years to 2003. It will provide five teachers in 2000 and three teachers for the two remaining years for the communities in Chubut Province. It will also assist in the training of local teachers of Welsh. The aim is to help the community become self-reliant in its revival of the Welsh language The project has proved very popular and successful in Chubut. It has been visited by the British Ambassador and some of the people involved were introduced to the Prince of Wales during his visit to Argentina in March 1999.
