Sometime in the seventh century, a Welsh Bishop heard an Englishman's voice on the bank of the River Severn and was filled with foreboding at the sound.. He recorded his unsettling experience thus: "For the kinsman of yonder strange-tongued man whose voice I heard across the river. . . will obtain possession of this place, and it will be theirs, and they will hold it in ownership." The bishop was wrong. More than twelve centuries have passed since the strange tongue of the Saxon was heard on the borders of Wales, centuries during which the ancient tongue of the Bishop and his fellow Britons had every opportunity to become extinct and yet which has stubbornly refused to die. The survival of the native language is truly one of the great wonders of Wales, to be appreciated and marvelled at far more than any physical feature or man-made object, and far more than the so-called seven wonders of Wales.

Welsh culture is popularly associated with singing - particularly male voice choirs - and with harp music. However, there's a lot more to it than that! Welsh literature dates back to the 6th century, making Welsh Europe's oldest living language. Welsh is a Celtic language, closely related to Breton and more distantly related to Scottish and Irish Gaelic. It is still the mother-tongue of a large number of people, and is taught either as a first or second language in all schools in Wales. Courses in Welsh for adults are held all over the country; one special location for residential courses is the Nant Gwrtheyrn centre (details of this site are also available in Welsh ). A Web-based Welsh course is also available. Modern Welsh literature has been written in both English and Welsh in all the standard literary forms - poetry, drama, novels, short stories etc; one of the leading modern Welsh publishers is Y Lolfa, whose catalogue is now available on the Web. A useful site containing information about many aspects of the poetry of Wales in both Welsh and English is available on the Web.

Full census figures published on Thursday reveal that more than 20% of people in Wales now speak Welsh. Figures revealed that 20.5% - more than one in five - of the population are Welsh speakers. This compares with 18.5% of Welsh speakers in the 1991 census. In addition, more than 28% able to understand Welsh. Statistics on families, health, ethnic background, housing, work and travel were also published, to add to the population figures, which were revealed in September 2002. Welsh is becoming not a rural language, but an urban language and it's gaining strength in places like Cardiff Dr John Davies Those figures showed that 2,903,085 people lived in Wales on census night in 2001 - up 2.4% on 10 years previously - but the latest statistics will paint a far more detailed picture of Welsh life.
