Last Review/Updated: May 31, 2002
The weasel family is large and diverse. Members of this family are found on all continents except Australia, Antarctica and the island of Madagascar. About 70 species have been described for the world. Alberta's representatives include the smallest of all living carnivores, the 70 g (2 1/2 oz.) least weasel, as well as the largest of the weasels, the wolverine, which may weigh 16 kg (35 lb.). Male weasels are usually 1/3 larger than females. The life style of weasels varies considerably, ranging from that of the river-dwelling otter and the prairie-dwelling badger to the tree-dwelling marten. Lifestyle Food Relationship Management ... Rechargeable Head Trapping the Weasel The weasel can be found throughout many parts of North America and the rest of the world. Tracks in the snow are the easiest way to tell that weasels are present. This is also the time to trap them as there fur turns white in the winter. Weasels are long and slender and max at 14" in length. Therefore, small traps are needed to trap them. The ordinary rat trap can be used. Also, #0 and #1 longsprings or the smaller conibears work well. Fresh and bloody bait is the key to catching the weasel. One the best weasel bait is the meat of a weasel itself. A good set can be constructed in small hollow logs with the bait placed up inside the log. This set is quite weatherproof, as the trap can also be set inside the log. Tying common rat traps 5 inches off the ground to a tree and baiting will also take weasel. Message Poems If your pet has sadly died and it is too late to take any clear photos I will willingly look at your photo and let you know if it is clear enough. I love my pet portrait work, but one of the saddest aspects is where an old pet has died and the owner has no clear photo to remember their friend by, or, indeed, to create a pet portrait memorial to their lost one. So take those pictures now, even if you do not yet decide on a painting of your pet. The happiest aspect of my work is when my client has received their pet portrait and telephone or write to let me know how delighted they are in spite of the tears over their lost friend. I have so many lovely letters telling me how the portrait of their pet is now taking pride of place in their home, and how they feel their pet's spirit is still with them whenever they gaze at the painting. So do not hesitate. Order your pet portrait painting today. You will be so glad you did.

Weasels
There are two species of weasels in Alaska: the short-tailed weasel or ermine Mustela erminea ) and the least weasel Mustela rixosa These furbearers are the smallest members of the family Mustelidae. Other species of mustelids in Alaska include mink, marten, river otter, sea otter, and wolverine. Weasels are more common than most people realize. Because they are small, they usually pass unnoticed unless caught in a trap or revealed by their tracks in fresh snow. Weasel tracks resemble those of the larger mink. They generally show four toe prints. The little toe seldom shows except in fresh snow or mud. Each weasel footprint is oval-shaped. In the snow, a single footprint will measure approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length and slightly less in width. The front feet of a running weasel strike the ground before the hind feet. Usually, one of the front feet falls slightly ahead of the other. The hind feet usually land in the tracks made by the front feet. Thus, the trail often appears as pairs of slightly offset prints. The distance between sets of prints is approximately 13 inches (33 cm). General description: In summer, both weasels are medium to dark brown above, with yellowish white underparts. Both species turn white in winter. The larger of the two is the short-tailed species. It can reach 15 inches (38 cm) in length and 7 ounces (198 g) in weight. The least weasel well deserves its title of the smallest living carnivore. It reaches a maximum length of 10 inches (25 cm) and a weight of 3 ounces (85 g). The short-tailed weasel's tail is one-fourth to one-third of the total body length while the least weasel's tail length comprises only about 15 percent of total body length. During all seasons the tip of short-tailed weasel's tail is black. The tail of the least weasel contains only a few black hairs.

7. ADF&G's Wildlife Notebook Series: Pikas
The weasel’s small size allows it to pursue pikas into burrows and among therocks. A relative of the weasel, the marten, also hunts pikas on occasion.

Pikas
The northern or collared pika Ochotona collaris ) is closely related to hares and rabbits. Also called the "rock rabbit," "coney," and "little chief hare," the pika’s name is derived from the Siberian word for this animal, puka . All but 2 of the 19 existing species of pika occur in Asia, where they probably originated. Fossil remains indicate that the pika family is over 15 million years old and most likely reached North America by crossing the Bering land bridge. General description: Pikas have stocky bodies, short legs, and are almost tailless. A distinct grayish patch on the shoulder and neck forms the northern pika’s "collar," appearing in definite contrast to the white fur on its chest and stomach. Pikas have fur-covered feet, but bare toe pads. Their sharp, curved claws help them climb from rock to rock with ease. Pikas are highly alert, possessing excellent hearing and vision. When fully grown, they weigh about 5 ounces (140 gms). Pikas form colonies in mountainous terrain, living in old rock slides, talus slopes, or around large boulders, usually with a meadow or patches of vegetation in the vicinity. They are normally found at high elevations, but isolated colonies near sea level have also been found. Small burrows at the edge of rock piles and the presence of small, dark, oval droppings indicate the existence of a pika colony. The presence of their "hay piles" will positively identify the colony.

http://www.nsis.org/wildlife/mamm/weasel.html
This family ( Mustelidae ) includes minks weasels skunks , and otters . They are small to medium-sized. Their long tails are never banded. The Mink Mustela vison , is found in coastal habitats along the Gulf Coast south to Hernando County and along the Atlantic Coast south to Matanzas Inlet. It is glossy, blackish brown with a long (20-24"), slender body, short legs and a long (7-8") bushy tail. It has small rounded ears and a white chin. It is active primarily at night, foraging for food in the water and along the banks. Diet consists of mammals, frogs, insects, birds, reptiles, and fish. Breeding season is from late winter to spring. Litters of 3-4 kits are born about 50 days later. PROTECTED The Everglades Mink Mustela vison evergladensis , is found in shallow freshwater marshes of the Everglades and Big Cypress Swamp. It is similar in appearance to the mink described below but a darker brown. Its diet is primarily crayfish, fish, and small mammals. There is evidence that the breeding season is from September to November. PROTECTED The River Otter Lutra canadensis , is found in most freshwater habitats in the panhandle and peninsula. It is glossy brown with a paler or gray tan underside. It has an elongated 35-43" body with a long (12-16") muscular tail. It has a small, flattened head, small, rounded ears, short legs, and webbed toes.

WEASEL: ferocious predator a blur as it closes in on its victim LIKE a tiny tiger in its ferocity, the weasel strikes terror into the shy inhabitants of hedgerows or fields when it sets out to hunt them.
Savage in its pursuit of prey, the bigger male still measures just eight inches long without its stubby tail and weighs about four ounces.
Whether shooting across the road like an elongated mouse, or bounding excitedly after its quarry, the weasel is usually moving too fast for close study. Described memorably by one observer as looking like an 'animated cigar', the weasel boasts a beautiful chestnut coat which gives way to a milky white underside. Still widespread across the country, it nests in any available crevice, giving birth to five or six young at a time. Smaller than its equally vicious cousin, the stoat, the weasel's dexterity and acrobatics are legendary. Mice and voles are its main prey but weasels will also take rabbits and rats when they can overpower them.
Nesting songbirds are another favourite target and its ultra thin body means the weasel has no difficulty slipping inside most garden nestboxes. Even boxes whose entrance holes measure less than an inch and a quarter in diameter are not safe.

http://cnet.windsor.ns.ca/Environment/Advocates/Anim/weasel.html
Weasel
Weasel, common name for small, fur-bearing, carnivorous mammals of the genus Mustela, family Mustelidae, comprising numerous species and subspecies. They are most abundant in North America and Europe but also occur in South America, northern Africa, and Asia. The various species of weasel are similar in appearance and habits. They are lithe, slender animals with elongated necks, muscular, snakelike bodies, and short legs. They vary from 13 to 40 cm (5 to 16 in) in length, and the male is larger than the female. Their heads are small and triangular with pointed snouts. Nearly all weasels are brown above and white beneath, and those found in northern regions turn white in the winter (see Ermine). In warmer regions weasels retain their brown coat throughout the year. The weasel, which preys on mice, rats, birds, and rabbits, is largely nocturnal. Extremely agile, it attacks animals larger than itself. Although sometimes a serious threat to poultry, it also feeds on rodents around farms. When young, the weasel can be tamed. The female makes a nest of straw, leaves, and moss in a ground crevice or a hollow tree. A litter has four or five young. Among the best-known species are the Arctic weasel, M. erminea, known also as the stoat, or ermine; the longtail weasel, M. frenata, of the U.S. and Mexico; and the mink, M. vison, native to the eastern and northern U.S. and to Canada. The black-footed ferret (see Ferret), M. nigripes, the largest of the weasels and native to the Rocky Mountain region, is known as the prairie-dog ferret because its predominant prey is the prairie dog. Other weasels also are called ferrets; polecat is another name for some species.

The white fur helps the bear sneak up on seals that are laying on the ice packs. If the bear sees a seal's breathing hole, it waits by the hole and drags the seal out as soon as its head appears. In the summer it is harder to catch seals, so before summer comes, the bears eat as much as they can to get fat, then live off the fat in their bodies. Females dig dens in the snow where they hibernate during the worst part of the winter. The cubs are born in the den. polar bear waits for a seal *** more about the POLAR BEAR CARIBOU are members of the deer family. They move across the Arctic in large herds. Caribou eat moss, lichen and green plants. For the winter they go to the forests of the south where trees give them protection from the wind and the snow. In the spring the caribou leave the forests and go to the tundra to have their calves. A baby caribou is able to stand and walk an hour after it is born. It can run when it is a day old. The baby has enemies like wolves, bears and eagles. *** more about the CARIBOU
THE MUSK OXEN have thick overcoats of shaggy long straight hair that hang down to the ground. Their undercoats are thick brown fleece. Some of the coat is shed in the summer. They huddle together in groups for protection and to keep warm. When wolves attack, the musk oxen form a circle around the calves. The adults face outward and use their sharp horns for defence.

The result from each school are to be found below. These are some of the wildlife found around Veneskoski Primary School. There are minks near our shool, too. The mink is 30-45 centimetres long (tail 14-20 centimetres) and it weighs 0,5-1,5 kg. It has a long neck and its fur is dark brown. Mink’s cubs (3-6) are born in May. Mink lives by water but it is an efficient hunter also in the dry ground. Mink eats fish, moles, crabs, birds and frogs. Male minks can even kill a rabbit. Our school is built next to the river Karvia. When the spring comes, we can see familiar tracks on the river bank. In Finland most of the beavers live in North Carelia, Hame, Satakunta and in the lake Saimaa. The beaver family usually gets a new member in May, just one cub a year. There is a beaver’s lair in the river nearby our school. Beavers sometimes build dams to the river, and because of the flood water, they can swim straight to trees they want to cut down. Beavers’ fur is dark brown. Its body is 65-100 centimetres and its tail is 25-35 centimetres long. Beaver’s weight is about 10-20 kilograms. Ca 1000 beavers are hunted every year by a special hunting permit. Otherwise our friend beaver and its dams are protected. Otter look a bit like a beaver. Its feet are webbed and its tail is paddle-shaped, so it is a good swimmer. An otter weighs 5-10 kilograms, its fur is brown and its ears are small. Its tail is pretty thick. Otters eat fish, crabs, castropods and small water rodents. You can see otters in all parts of Finland. Otter’s lair is usually in the riverbank and the cubs are born in April-May. The cubs follow their parents for six months. Though it is hard to hunt otters and they are being protected, the number of the otters has been dropping.
