Qualified for the European Cup of Champion Clubs
The Olympic Nice Natation - Water polo is a Nice club with a European dimension. It has several international players, who have been selected in various France teams: RESULTS OF THE SEASON 98-99: ONCE AGAIN, THE TEAM IS CHAMPION OF FRANCE The ONN water-polo team has successfully won the title of Champion of France in 1999 by defeating its eternal rival: t he Cercle des Nageurs of Marseille. This title allows it to rise to the most prestigious European Cup in this discipline: the European Cup of Champion Clubs. At the end of this European Cup, the Nice players have come in the very closed club of the best 8 European teams. As a matter of interest, the best French performance at this level of competition was one of the ONN which went to the semi-finals of the European Cup of Champion Clubs in 1993. After it had won the first leg at the Jean Boin swimming pool, the Nice team was defeated in Zagreb during the terrible event of a "sudden death" situation against the team which was the European Champion: the Croatians from Split.

ANCIENT ORIGINS WOMEN DARE TO TREAD WATER IN A MAN'S WORLD
Water-polo players are some of the biggest, meanest and most muscle-bound athletes at the Games - and that's just the women. The fairer sex, though the term is indeed debatable in the tough world of water polo, make their Olympic debut in Sydney, with six teams competing for glory, as opposed to 12 teams among men. Scotland introduced rules in the late 19th century that marked the start of the modern game, which quickly spread throughout the British Empire and continental Europe. By the turn of the century it had become popular in the United States and joined the Olympic family of sports at Paris in 1900.

Men's water polo has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900, with British teams winning the Olympic tournaments in 1900, 1908, 1912 and 1920. By 1920, 12 countries competed for medals, although Germany, Austria and Hungary were suspended. On a regional and continental level, the sport was first included at European Championships in 1926. The first World Aquatic Championships for men was held in connection with other water sports in Belgrade in 1973, and the water polo World Cup championships were introduced in 1979. Junior World Cup championships began in 1981. The most successful men's water polo teams of all time have come from Hungary, winning medals at nearly all Olympic Games, European and World Cup championships since 1928. Water polo is Hungary's top national sport, but in the last few decades Russia, Yugoslavia and Italy have also produced world-class teams. Water Polo
Water polo originated in England during the 1870s, and as legend has it, the sport was developed by spirited young men who wanted to play rugby and cool off at the same time. It soon became popular in the United States and is now a major sport in a number of European countries. Its first appearance in the Olympics was at the 1900 Games where it was the first team sport admitted to the Olympics.

Competition
Games are divided into four periods of seven minutes each, with a two-minute interval between periods. One point is scored when the ball is thrown or shoved completely past the face of the goal. In case of a tie, two three-minute overtime periods are held; if necessary, two more are played until a winner is decided. Players wear caps of contrasting colors for easier identification; the official rules stipulate white for one team, blue for the other, and red caps for the goalies.

Swimming
The first modern Olympic swimming contests were held outdoor in open water. The weather had turned unusually cold at the Bay of Zea at Phaleron, near Piraeus, and on the morning of the competition the temperature in the water had dropped to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Centigrade). Unlike early competitions, which were held in lakes, rivers and the open sea, all events are now held in Olympic-size pools, where the water temperature is kept between 78 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
