Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

ABOUT WATER POLO
HISTORY
There is little documentation as to the origins of water polo. However, we do know that the term "polo" is the English pronunciation of the Indian word "pulu," meaning ball. Just as the ball game played on horseback became known as "polo," the ball game played in water became known as "water polo," although there is no connection whatsoever between the two sports. Water polo made its first appearance at the 1900 Olympic Games, and it has appeared in every Games since then. Prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool through four seven-minute quarters, water-polo players swim up to five kilometers in a game. They require the technique and endurance of a champion swimmer, plus a football player's finesse in passing, dribbling and shooting for goal and a rugby player's strength to battle for the ball. The game that evolved into modern water polo began as a form of rugby football played in rivers and lakes with the object to "carry" the ball to the opponent's side.

RUSSIANS WIN BRONZE IN WORLD WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIP
The Russian team won bronze in the men's world championship as it contested with Italy, 7-6 (2-1, 1-3, 1-0, 3-2). Dmitri Gorshkov and Revaz Chomakhidze goaled twice each, and Alexander Yeryshov, Marat Zakirov and Sergei Garbuzov once.
Italians were first to goal with a numerical superiority Luigi Dicostanzo three minutes after the start. Russians, however, soon took the upper hand with 2-1 thanks to captain Dmitri Gorshkov and forward Alexander Yeryshov.
Marat Zakirov goaled again in a second time, Russia leading by 2. Many thought the game was done even then before Italy's Bohdan Raht goaled twice and Leonardo Binci once to lead 4-3.
A dramatic third time brought only one goal, Revaz Chomakhidze's, with Russian numerical superiority.
Dmitri Gorshkov opened the fourth getting his team to lead, 5-4. Attacks followed to both sides, Sergei Garbuzov 6-4 and Alberto Angelini 6-5. Revaz Chomakhidze goaled a seventh 53 seconds before the end. Bohdan Raht hit back 17 seconds later.
The last minutes were thick with suspense as Russians chose caution against Italians anxious to drawin vain.

Excerpts printed from "A Canadian History of the Sport and Art of Diving", Vaughan L. Baird, CM, LL.D, QC. Printed July 1, 1994. With many thanks to the author. Contents: THE ORGANIZATION OF COMPETITIVE SWIMMING AND DIVING In Canada, the first 10m diving tower (located outdoors) was erected at Montreal, in 1909. Canada's first Indoor Olympic-Standard Diving Facility was at the Pan-Am Pool in Winnipeg, built in 1967. A tower with 3m, 5m, 7.5m, and 10m levels was included in its planning and development from the outset, and at the time of its completion, the Pan-Am Pool was generally regarded as one of the world's premier diving and swimming complexes and continues to be so.
First Canadian Towers
Pan-Am Pool An indoor 10m tower was erected in the rafters of the Pointe Claire Pool (Quebec), in 1967, at the ingenious suggestion of Coach Jim Wood. Lacking a 7.5 m tower, Pointe Claire Pool is not of Olympic Standard, but this has not prevented its Diving Club from becoming arguably one of the most outstanding in the country, always producing a strong team. The organization of aquatic sports in Canada dates back more than 125 years. The Montreal Swimming Club (MSC) was founded in 1876 and is unique in the annals of aquatic sports in Canada. Until it ceased operation in 1962, it was reputed to be the oldest Chartered Swim Club in North America. Mr. Alfred A. Gross, in compiling the history of MSC, noted that it was actually the birthplace in Canada of three competitive sports: Swimming, Diving and Water Polo.

News YORK Equipment Cools Indoor Aquatic Centre in Sydney, Australia The Aquatic Centre, which opened its doors in 1994, is the first of several Olympic venues that were constructed for the 2000 Summer Olympics . It is was used by the general public before the Games, and during the Olympics it hosted the swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo events. Juan Antonio Samaranch, the president of the International Olympic Committee, described the new Sydney International Aquatic Centre as the "best swimming pool I have ever seen." It's easy to understand why Samaranch, as well as countless Australians, are excited about the Aquatic Centre. The $380 million facility is one of the largest indoor complexes of its kind in the world. And it features an innovative HVAC system driven by a central plant supplied by YORK International Australia that cools both the large spectator seating area and the main competition area below. "The HVAC system is unique because it involves creating a personal comfort envelope around each spectator rather than air-conditioning the entire main-pool enclosure," said Mark Ganley, general manager, sales and production, YORK Australia. "There is a significant temperature gradient between the spectator and pool areas."

Hall of Fame Randy Howatt Coach's Note: Randy was on the first team that played for UCI and did a great deal to help set the tradition for water polo at UCI. He along with Pat Glasgow, Bill Leach, and Bob Nealy really started off the sport of water polo at UCI. Randy has done a great deal for the sport over the years since he played at UCI. Randy also played for me at Newport Harbor High School, then for Al Irwin at OCC and then again for me at UCI. Bill Leach Coach's Note: Played for me at CDM then for Al Irwin at OCC; then transfered to UCI. He swam and played water polo at UCI. He set the tradition along with Randy Howatt, Pat Glasgow and Bob Nealy for great work ethics. Without their early efforts the program would have had trouble developing as it did. Bill went on to the US National team and he traveled to Europe with me when I was National coach in 1970. He then became involved in Kayaking and went to the Olympics in 1976. He then has become one of the top triathletes in every age group and is still competing successfully in this sport.
