History
As swimming became a popular recreation in England during the 1860s and 1870s, several water sports developed, roughly patterned after land sports. Among them were water football (or soccer), water rugby, water handball, and water polo, in which players rode on floating barrels, painted to look like horses, and struck the ball with a stick. Water rugby became the most popular of these sports, but somehow the water polo name became attached to it, and it's been attached ever since. As played in England, the object of the game was for a player to touch the ball, with both hands, at the goal end of the pool. The goaltender stood on the pool deck, ready to dive on any opponent who was about to score. Water polo quickly became a very rough sport, filled with underwater fights away from the ball, and it wasn't unusual for players to pass out for lack of air. In 1877, the sport was tamed in Scotland by the addition of goalposts. The Scots also replaced the original small, hard rubber ball with a soccer ball and adopted rules that prohibited taking the ball under the surface or "tackling" a player unless he had the ball.

    Olympic History: Water Polo
In the mid-1800s, water polo was derived from England as an aquatic version of rugby football. By 1870, the London Swimming Association made a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools. The sport was primarily played in rivers and lakes and was in stark contrast from today's game. Water polo was more rough than rugby and players often came to the water's surface almost unconscious from long wrestling bouts underwater. It was so brutal that many colleges in the U.S. banned water polo from its campuses. When rule changes were introduced in Scotland in the 1880s, the modern game came to be, focusing more on skill than strength. As a result, the sport became more popular as it spread throughout Europe and Britain.

    History
USA Water Polo has usually held two national championships, in summer and winter. The summer tournament was traditionally played outdoors, the summer tournament indoors, using a somewhat smaller pool. Before World War II, the summer tournament was generally considered the true national championship. Since then, though, the outdoor tournament has been the more prestigious of the two. Since 2001, the winter tournament has been called the Open Championship and the summer tournament has been called the National Championship. Top of page

National championships for women have been determined in the Netherlands since 1914. In the United States national championships began in 1926 and Australia national playoffs began in 1968. In Canada, national playoffs have been in existence since 1973. In 1979, FINA began the women's World Cup championship, with the European championships beginning in 1985. Women's water polo made its first appearance at the World Aquatic Championships in 1986. Then, FINA recommended that the IOC consider adding women's water polo to the summer Olympic Games program as soon as possible. We will see this happen in Sydney at the 2000 Olympics. And for the first time in the history of the Pan American Games, women's water polo was a medal sport at the 1999 XIII Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. History of Water Polo
Water-polo players are some of the biggest, meanest and most muscle-bound athletes at the Games - and that's just the women. The fairer sex, though the term is indeed debatable in the tough world of water polo, make their Olympic debut in Sydney, with six teams competing for glory, as opposed to 12 teams among men. Comparisons with football and rugby do little justice to water polo, a game in which swimmers must never touch the sides or bottom of the pool but stay afloat either treading water or swimming throughout the entire match. It is not uncommon for competitors to swim 5 kilometres in a match that consists of four seven-minute quarters but can last much longer because of stoppages. Beyond the need to have the stamina of a champion swimmer, players must then also have the power to endure the below-surface trickery and fouling that are part and parcel of the fight and possess skills of passing, dribbling and shooting. The game's origins can be traced back to holiday camps in England in the 19th century, when resort owners used a form of waterpolo to attract attention and guests. It was not quite the structured affair we recognise today; among the many tricks that players used to get up to was to hide the ball in their trunks, disappear into the murky depths of pond, river or lake and emerge near the goal for a surprise attack. Fighting was common (and in some ways still is), with many a player emerging from underwater tussles in a semi-conscious state. So violent did the game become at one stage that it was banned from American universities.

    Foundation - 1990-1993
Whitney Foster, Peter Gordon, Ed Hirsch, John Testa, Ed Opalach, Jerry Mujica and other "post collegiate" players form the Atlanta WPC, aka Georgia Tech Water Polo. Program grows rapidly over the next year including large growth of GT undergraduate participation. Atlanta WPC starts hosting tournaments, including several Zone Championships, and starts to build a reputation as a great host. ATL WPC sends squads to several USWP Indoor National Championships ('92, '93). In 1992 ATL WPC becomes the only water polo team in the U.S. sponsored by PowerBar as part of the company's TEAM Elite program.
    Moving On Up - 1994-1995
More and more GT students join the club and playing time becomes an issue. Knowing that it was in the best interest of those GT student who wanted to play, ATL WPC moved on to help start club water polo at nearby Emory University. After just over a year Emory student participation soars and the "post collegiate" players again decide to move on. In just over 2 years ATL WPC has been critical in the foundation of three new water polo clubs in Atlanta: Georgia Tech, Emory (men) and Emory (women).
