90. 2001 - 2003 Academic Catalogue - Academic Programs
Organized into eight goal areas and five acrossthe-curriculum areas, general Educationrequirements may be completed by Mary washington College coursework, by
http://www.mwc.edu/catalogue/2001_03/programs/ba_bs.htm

Academic Programs
Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science
Requirements for these degrees are divided into three basic categories: General Education courses, the major program, and elective courses. The General Education requirements acquaint the student with the various areas of study and modes of thought in the liberal arts and sciences. The major program allows a student to investigate one discipline (or several in an interdisciplinary or special major) in depth. Although students must major in an academic discipline, they may also work toward a specific career or professional goal. Both major programs and career opportunities are outlined in the following sections. Together, the General Education requirements and the major program account for approximately one-half to two-thirds of the total course of study. Although students decide individually how best to fulfill the rest of their undergraduate curriculum, the College encourages a rich and diverse total program. Options open to the student include individual study, student-designed special majors, pass/fail courses, and double majors. Making decisions is a part of one's education at Mary Washington. While faculty members help students select courses and major programs of study, the final decisions are the student's own. Students are responsible for assuring that they fulfill all degree requirements.
