Some of these kids have distinctly Khampa mannerisms, different from the local just a littlesomething about the chin, the confident eyes, the punky gait, and accents in their Sichuan- hua - from the diary of teacher Billie Karel NEW : a spiritual seeker writes about his experience teaching English in Kangding. English Teaching Program
A call for volunteers Background Unlike Lhasa, already a center for tourism, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (where we do our work) has very few Tibetans who speak English. The education system is far behind that of more developed parts of China, and the children are already burdened with the task of mastering two languages, Tibetan and Chinese. Until recently, there was little reason to learn English, and it was commonly students' most hated subject.

Project AstroBio
A STELLAR OPPORTUNITY FOR TEACHERS
What is Project AstroBio? In this innovative program twenty-five 3rd - 12th grade teachers from the Puget Sound region are paired each year with volunteer astronomers and other scientists who have an interest in working with local schools and organizations. Together, teachers and partner scientists participate in a hands-on training workshop, receive high quality resource materials, and develop a strategy for working together in and out of the classroom. There are a total of 68 Project AstroBio partnerships, from Everett to Olympia! "Classic" Project Astro, which began in Seattle in 1997, has become Project AstroBio as of 2002, to reflect a new and growing involvement in the sciences of astrobiology, which is the study of the origin, history, and extremes of life on Earth, as well as the possibility of life on other planets. Whereas in past years Project Astro teachers were paired solely with amateur, student, and professional astronomers, Project AstroBio teachers now may be paired with either astronomers or with scientists with more of a biology background. The range of science that can be done by hands-on activities now includes not only astronomy and related sciences, but also aspects of life in the universe. Partnerships involve more than just one-time visits:
Scientists and teachers commit to at least five school year visits. These may include hands-on activities, evening star parties, creating or assisting with a science club, going on field trips, doing science fair projects, and more.

Volunteer Opportunities Our students have chosen to come to Ecuador because they have an interest in learning our language and about our culture. For many, volunteering in Ecuador is an important part of their learning experience. It constantly amazes us how many of our students choose to devote some of their time to socially conscious volunteer work. We like to encourage out students, as we feel it provides a way for students to learn more about the Ecuadorian life and culture, while simultaneously allowing Ecuadorians to learn about foreigners. This cross-cultural exchange was one of Colonial Spanish Schools founding principles. For this reason, we provide a number of volunteer opportunities for our students. We have listed the most popular ones above. However, we have contacts with over 50 non-for-profit organizations who are interested in working with our students. There are organizations that work with children, ecological projects, teaching, and many many more. Since classes are held for only half the day, many students find they have time to spend in other ways besides studying. Others wish to concentrate on studying first and then concentrate on working afterwards. We can help you find a program and schedule that is right for you - just contact us!

Daughter's trip teaches mom By Lee Kucera Somehow last month I ended up with a $125 credit on my Nordstrom account. On a weekend visit to our 20-year old college daughter, she and I shot the entire wad on makeup. We were aided and abetted in this reckless impulse by one of those gracious young Nordstrom saleswomen who take such things seriously. She arched her fingers ever so delicately above the little round pots of color, like a concert pianist poised to begin at the keyboard, and selected one shade out of the dozens of infinitesimally different other shades. We stood there obediently while she swept a soft luxurious brush over our cheeks, and walked away from the fragrant, rarefied ambiance in Nordstrom flush with extravagance and clutching tiny, gold-embossed bags of lipstick, eye shadow, and face powder. On the day we splurged at the cosmetics counter, my younger daughter, who will celebrate her 17th birthday very far from home this year, was mixing cement in 100-degree heat to use in constructing latrines for rural villagers in Latin America. She and hundreds of other American kids are working as volunteers on public health projects in Mexico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Bolivia through the Amigos de las Americas programa kind of abbreviated Peace Corps service for teenagers. In most cases they live without electricity or running water for eight weeks while they work on building projects that will have a long-term impact on the lives of the villagers, such as latrines or teacher housing.
