The Global Volunteer Network currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization in the beautiful Kingdom of Nepal. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational and community aid programs. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Nepal and while doing so gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture, that will stay with you the rest of your life.
:: The Program
The volunteer opportunities are in areas such as Teaching English, Environmental Awareness, Health and Sanitation issues/Primary Health Care and a Home Stay Programme/Cultural Exchange. Your placement will be tailored according to your individual needs and interests.
Teaching English
Volunteers will be provided with training about how to teach in Nepal. The system of teaching is different in Nepal so volunteers will be taught their teaching methodology. Volunteers will stay with a Nepali family near the school. Volunteers will teach for about 2 to 3 hours each day for six days a week (Saturday is the day off). They will also be involved in teaching in youth clubs or a women's group for informal education for 1 to 2 hours a day. School children will be 10 to 14 years of age and have basic level of English. Volunteers for this program will also be engaged to let the teachers of the school know about teaching practices and conversational English to enable them to teach English in the future.

Volunteer at Citizen Schools
Citizen Teachers teach or co-teach an Apprenticeship to a group of 6-10 children, whom we call Apprentices. Whatever your passion, whatever your expertise, we have Apprentices that want to learn about it! By volunteering just a few hours a week, for ten weeks in the school year or for five weeks in the summer, you can teach Apprentices to design websites, build engines, start a business, perform original dances or anything else you want to share with kids. Each Apprenticeship culminates in a Wow - the final product, presentation or performance created by the Apprentices. We call them Wows because "Wow!" is a common reaction when adults see what our Apprentices have accomplished! Please see the Wow! section

HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE DURING A VOLUNTEER VACATION:
TEACH CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH
in 15 minutes in a few hours during vacation Local ... Internships The Opportunity Positions to teach conversational English during a volunteer vacation are available in some of the world's most exotic and remote villages, in countries ranging from Ghana, to China, to Poland. For children in these places, with limited education and prospects, learning conversational English can eventually open up opportunities in the hospitality industry that could provide a reliable income to support their families. Even when these children have access to education beyond elementary school, practicing conversational English with volunteers still has significant value. For these students, improving fluency in English can make the difference between low income prospects and climbing socio-economic status by competing for middle class jobs in a business world where knowledge of conversational English is becoming more of a pre-requisite. When coordinated by agencies, short-term trips to teach English usually combine volunteerism with tourism and cultural immersion. So, program fees to "volunteer" tend to be on the high side. However, if you've never before volunteered overseas, teaching conversational English can be a good entree, because most of your needs will be anticipated, and cared for, by the coordinating agency.

International Volunteer Programs with PDA
The variety of developmental activities undertaken by PDA means that there is a need for skilled assistance in many of the projects. Sometimes these skills cannot be sourced in Thailand, so PDA offers the opportunity for volunteers to be involved in making these necessary changes in rural Thailand. Currently there are volunteers from seven countries working at several PDA locations around Thailand, working on projects ranging from village mapping and town planning, AIDS education and care, journalism, teaching, agriculture and affordable housing construction. PDA offers enthusiastic people a chance to live and work in an exciting and challenging environment, giving the rewards of being part of the team that helped to make a difference in Thailand. These page gives some case studies and examples of the type of work undertaken. If you are interested in participating, then contact your local organisation or PDA directly. You do NOT need to be affiliated with any particular service organisation, PDA is able to accept solo volunteers on similar local conditions of employment as those that work with established volunteer organisations.

October 15, 2001
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/solar_system/features/ambassadors.html When U.S. Army veteran John Reiss Jr. got a request to make a presentation to retired military officers in Yuma, Ariz., he had no idea it would blossom into a two-day, multi-subject event for potentially hundreds of people. The request came to Reiss because he is a Solar System Ambassador, one of a nationwide network of more than 200 volunteers coordinated by JPL. The ambassadors lead public programs about space exploration. On Oct. 17 and 18, Reiss, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and a colleague, Jim Ashley, will be making six presentations at various locations in the Yuma area, including Arizona Western College, the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station and the Army's Yuma Proving Ground. Commanding Officer Col. Mark E. Condra will introduce Reiss at the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station. Reiss will describe the Mars Odyssey and Cassini-Huygens missions. Mars Odyssey, which will arrive at Mars on Oct. 24 Universal time (Oct. 23 Pacific time), will take measurements of the red planet's atmosphere and collect images to help scientists better understand its composition. Cassini-Huygens is on its way to Saturn and Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Ashley will present information about asteroids and comets that orbit near Earth. He will also give tips for viewing next month's Leonid meteor shower. Ashley is associate director of Minor Planet Research, Inc., an Arizona-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to discovering near-Earth asteroids and comets.

More than 80 MIT students will spend their spring break volunteering their services instead of sunbathing on the beach of a tropical island. They're participating in Alternative Spring Break, a student-managed program that sends volunteers out to teach, build homes, assist at children's camps and work in AIDS hospices. MIT's Alternative Spring Break (ASB) was started in 1996 by Anthony Ives, then an MIT junior, who arranged for a few students to teach in the inner-city schools of Washington, DC. The ASB is now run by five student officers who have expanded the program to serve eight communities in the United States and Puerto Rico. This year's trips, scheduled for March 20 to 27, are:
  • The AIDS Awareness Trip to New Orleans will place volunteers in Project Lazarus, an AIDS hospice, where they will "help people there live their daily lives," said ASB publicity chair Cherry Liu. Other volunteers will be placed at Belle Reve, where they'll provide services like painting and cleaning.
    Students going to Camp Speers, a YMCA Environmental Education camp for children in Dingmans Ferry, PA, will teach ropes courses, team work, survival, ecology, cross-country skiing, rock climbing, hiking, ice fishing, archery, arts and crafts, and ice skating.
