Volunteer in Italy
Teach English and Share Culture

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). Experience Europe as a volunteer! Teach English and see southern Italy as local people live it.
As a lauded tourist destination, Italy exudes familiarity to international travelers. But what many tourists miss is a meaningful connection on a human level. Building relationships based upon mutual respect and seeing another country as a "non-tourist" this is the goal of the "volunteer vacationer." Demonstrate international volunteering and the value of life-enhancing people-to-people service. Get to know the REAL ITALY!
" We need only a smile and a hand to share with others to
build bridges of understanding throughout the world."
-Angela Loparco, teacher in Cisternino Italy Service Program Dates Italy Volunteer Work Projects In 1995, schoolteachers in the Puglia region of southern Italy invited Global Volunteers to teach conversational English in their classrooms. This exposure to native English speakers gives the students an unmatched educational advantage, and helps them question stereotypes about Americans and other English-speaking volunteers. Likewise, the volunteers gain a unique non-tourist perspective of this captivating region and people. The volunteers cooperate with the local teachers to plan each day's work using student texts and established lesson plans. Volunteers review and build on exercises the students have completed and will be studying in the near term.

V O L U N T A R Y W O R K I N S O U H T A M E R I C A FROM MAY TO JANUARY Dear Friend. Let me tell you about our program, "THE GENESIS EXCHANGE PROGRAM" (TGEP). It is a program which allows you to get to know not only our students, but also our customs, life and language. It is a small school (UNIDAD EDUCATIVA GENESIS) in Bahia de Caraquez, where we give an excellent and well-rounded education to our children. (We also give free education to some poor students.) I am the teacher of Computing and English. We have 3 grades (with 4 - 7 students in each grade) and a kindergarten. The children are aged from 4 to 7 years. Your job will be to teach English (just in the mornings, for 2 hours each day). The students have English text books and we can also help you to develop an English program to work through together. You can use a variety of methods - singing songs, repeating words, playing with flash cards – anything to help them to learn, and enjoy learning, English. You can wear casual clothes – just be nice and clean for the classes :). We ask only for your positive energy, love, patience and creativity when working with our children. Whilst you are teaching, you will have a free room at my mother's house. (You will pay only for food and washing clothes.) The house is right next to the school and very close to the beach. You will have a wonderful time in our place. -Teach English to children of 3 to 7 years of age for two hours each morning in classes of no more than 10 pupils.

Ambassador home page
When U.S. Army veteran John Reiss Jr. got a request to make a presentation to retired military officers in Yuma, Ariz., he had no idea it would blossom into a two-day, multi-subject event for potentially hundreds of people. The request came to Reiss because he is a Solar System Ambassador, one of a nationwide network of more than 200 volunteers coordinated by JPL. The ambassadors lead public programs about space exploration. On Oct. 17 and 18, Reiss, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and a colleague, Jim Ashley, will be making six presentations at various locations in the Yuma area, including Arizona Western College, the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station and the Army's Yuma Proving Ground. Commanding Officer Col. Mark E. Condra will introduce Reiss at the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station. Reiss will discuss Cassini mission.

High resolution TIFF
Reiss will describe the Mars Odyssey and Cassini-Huygens missions. Mars Odyssey, which will arrive at Mars on Oct. 24 Universal time (Oct. 23 Pacific time), will take measurements of the red planet's atmosphere and collect images to help scientists better understand its composition. Cassini-Huygens is on its way to Saturn and Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Ashley will present information about asteroids and comets that orbit near Earth. He will also give tips for viewing next month's Leonid meteor shower. Ashley is associate director of Minor Planet Research, Inc., an Arizona-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to discovering near-Earth asteroids and comets.

Mom manages to write, teach, volunteer, even bird-watch By ASA BUSHNELL The Courier It’s probably true that Marjorie White Pellegrino is not a household name among most adults in our community, but her skills touch the lives of so many youngsters in so many memorable ways that almost everyone in the next generation soon will know who she is. In the heroic tradition of "The Scarlet Pimpernel," she’s here, she’s there, she’s everywhere, helping others with tireless enthusiasm. "I showed my schedule for the coming month to a friend," says Pellegrino, "and she remarked, ‘That’s pathetic.’" Well, "pathetic" obviously isn’t the word Marge Pellegrino would use – she prefers "exciting," "rewarding" or "fun" – though she readily admits her nonstop volunteerism for little monetary gain could be viewed as pitiful. A favorite cause is the Tucson Writers’ Project, which she describes as a "jewel in the crown" of the Tucson-Pima Public Library system. As a part of an APPLECORP grant, obtained for TWP through the "genius" of Ann Dernier, the library’s poet-in-residence, Pellegrino this year is involved with the Center for Prevention and Resolution of Violence at the Southside Presbyterian Church and PAL (Play and Learn) after-school program at Keeling Elementary in the Amphitheater School District. "Both programs empower students through writing and community-building activities," she enthuses.

Volunteering with Makor Makor is a grassroots organization dedicated to building unique learning communities centered around Shabbat Dinner. Makor depends on volunteers and here is a list of ways you can help Makor: Monthly Volunteer Opportunities: Host Makor Shabbat Dinner: Do a mitzvah and open your home or apartment for Makor Shabbat Dinner. Makor will provide: A kosher main dish, paper goods for the dinner, learning materials, a facilitator and guests. We ask hosts to be able to host at least ten people, welcome guests for Shabbat, and help new participants feel welcome. Facilitate at Makor Shabbat Dinner: At Makor Shabbat dinners around the city, Makor participants create grassroots learning communities based on material studied with other facilitators in advance of Makor Shabbat. Makor is based on the principal that we study together from different knowledge sets and that is what makes us special. (i.e. you did not have to be a Judaic Studies major in your undergraduate studies). We can arrange for first time facilitators to team facilitate if that makes people more comfortable. Call Makor: In advance of Makor Shabbat we make phone calls inviting our community to join together for Shabbat dinner. Makor phone callers make this happen, as well as inviting friends and colleagues, to try the Makor Shabbat experience.Other opportunities:
