Hans Holbein, the younger, Typus Cosmographia Universalis
Cultural Maps is dedicated to the graphical presentation of non-graphical information whatever that turns out to mean. At present, it has something to do with maps in the ordinary and normal sense of the term; the immediate goal is to build a digital American Historical Atlas. To the extent that maps serve as guides not only to the physical terrain but also and importantly as charts of the mapmaker's mental and cultural terrain, of the memories and desires, anxieties and assumptions he projects upon any terra incognita, we have begun building an historical geography of America. Eventually, this space will come to include graphs, charts, and images, in fact anything that serves as a concrete and physical representation of abstract ideas and intangible feelings.

Physiography
The New River Valley falls within three distinct physiographic provinces: the Blue Ridge Province (Floyd County), the Valley and Ridge Province (Pulaski County, Montgomery County, most of Giles County, and the City of Radford), and the Appalachian Plateau (in a small part of Giles County). The Blue Ridge Province is characterized by irregular topography and is generally classified as moderately sloped (i.e., slopes ranging from 5-20%). The Valley and Ridge Province exhibits parallel-running ridges with accompanying valleys and is considered to be steeply sloped (slopes greater than 20%). The small portion of Giles County lying within the Appalachian Plateau Province is also considered to be steeply sloped. Overall, the land area in the New River Valley is classified as 47.9% moderately sloped, and about 7.5% as level. Figure 1 (page 7) illustrates the topography of the New River Valley.
Geology
Each province has very different geological characteristics. Giles, Pulaski, and Montgomery counties are mainly located in the Valley and Ridge Province which is characterized by sedimentary rocks such as limestone, shale, and sandstone. Historically, limestone has been mined for agriculture use and sandstone for building purposes. Floyd County is located in the Blue Ridge Province which is characterized by metamorphic rocks such as gneiss and schist. Metamorphic rocks are generally harder rocks and have been mined for use in road construction.

Kennedy Instructor: J. D. Boyer Career Advisors: L. W. Carstensen; R. W. Morrill (231-6886) Geography is the science of place and space. Geographers examine the significance of where things are located on the surface of the earth, why they are located where they are, how places differ from one another, and how people interact with their environments. At Virginia Tech, students pursue courses in human geography (including social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions), physical geography (such as the study of landscapes and climate), and the preparation and interpretation of maps and images of the earth (using Geographic Information Systems). Students learn both qualitative and computer-based skills that are much in demand in the workplace. Geographers describe, analyze, interpret, and forecast human and biophysical patterns at local, regional, and global scales. Their frame of reference includes the past, present, and future. Geographers study why things are where they are, when and how they got there, and the processes and forces that shape these patterns. The bachelor's curriculum provides undergraduates with a sense of value of geography in liberal education, balanced with preparation for more advanced study and for careers that the discipline offers. While emphasis is placed upon the acquisition of a sound and flexible generalist degree, juniors and seniors are also encouraged to select an area of concentration such as urban, historical, medical, or physical geography and resource analysis, or GIS and remote sensing.

World Geography The focus of this course is the study of the world's peoples, places, and environments, with an emphasis on world regions. The knowledge, skills, and perspectives of the course are centered on the world's population and cultural characteristics, landforms and climates, economic development, and migration and settlement patterns. Spatial concepts of geography will be used as a framework for studying interactions between humans and their environments. Using geographic resources, students will employ inquiry, research, and technology skills to ask and answer geographic questions. Particular emphasis is placed on students' understanding and applying geographic concepts and skills to their daily lives. Geographic skills provide the necessary tools and technologies for thinking geographically. These skills help people make important decisions in their daily lives, such as how to get to work and where to shop, vacation, or go to school. They also help people make reasoned political decisions and aid in the development and presentation of effective, persuasive arguments for and against matters of public policy. All of these decisions involve the ability to acquire, arrange, and use geographic information. Maps, as well as graphs, sketches, diagrams, photographs, and satellite-produced images, are essential tools of geography. Geographic skills include
  • asking geographic questions acquiring geographic information

World History and Geography to 1500 A.D. These standards enable students to explore the historical development of people, places, and patterns of life from ancient times until 1500 A.D. in terms of the impact on Western civilization. The study of history rests on knowledge of dates, names, places, events, and ideas. Historical understanding, however, requires students to engage in historical thinking: to raise questions and marshal evidence in support of their answers. Students engaged in historical thinking draw upon chronological thinking, historical comprehension, historical analysis and interpretation, historical research, and decision making. These skills are developed through the study of significant historical substance from the era or society being studied. WHI.1 Era I: Human Origins and Early Civilizations
Era II: Classical Civilizations and Rise of Religious Traditions

Era III: Postclassical Civilizations
... Era IV: Regional Interactions
WHI.1 The student will improve skills in historical research and geographical analysis by
  • identifying, analyzing, and interpreting primary and secondary sources to make generalizations about events and life in world history to 1500 A.D.;

Virginia's Coastal Plain (Tidewater) Region Explore Virginia's Coastal Plain. Print this graphic organizer to record your findings. Use this page and your textbook to help you. The Tidewater Region is an area of low, flat coastal plain that begins at the Atlantic Coast and stretches inland to the Fall Line. Here, at the Fall Line, rivers drop sharply from the Piedmont Region on their way to the sea. Rocks and waterfalls at the Fall Line stop ships from going any farther inland. Virginia's Peninsulas There are four peninsulas in the Coastal Plain (Tidewater) Region. The part of Virginia known as the Eastern Shore is one of the peninsulas. It is separated from the mainland of Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay. The other three peninsulas are located on the mainland. One is the Northern Neck Peninsula. It is located between the Potomac and the Rappahannock rivers. One is the Middle Peninsula. This peninsula is between the Rappahannock and the York rivers. One is simply called The Peninsula. It is located between the York and James rivers. For years, the only way to get from the Eastern Shore to the mainland was by ferry. Farmers on the Eastern Shore once used the ferries to carry their produce to cities on the mainland. Now refrigerated trucks carry Eastern Shore fruits and vegetables across the Chesapeake Bay through tunnels and over bridges. This great bridge-tunnel is 17 miles of roadsome of which is a tunnel that goes under the water.
