It is critical to the future success of higher education that we have governing bodies that are inclusive and reflect the diversity of our students, our professors, and our Commonwealth. Students from other schools are invited to submit articles for inclusion on this site.
This site is intended to be viewed at a screen resolution of 600 X 800 West Virginia, Land of Diversity West Virginia is a land of wide diversity. Mountains and valleys, deep forests, coal mines and expansive orchards all describe parts of the state. We were originally part of Virginia but in 1861 the people voted for succession and the state was split in 1863 to become the 35th state to enter the Union. Charleston is the state capitol. West Virginia is found entirely within the Appalachian Mountain chain. It is bordered by Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio and has a land area of 62,761 square kilometers or 24,232 square miles. The highest point, Spruce Knob, is 1482 meters high (4861 feet) and the lowest point, Harper's Ferry, is only 75 meters (247 feet). With an average altitude of 457 meters (1,500 feet), West Virginia has the highest average elevation of any state east of the Mississippi River. The beauty of the state lies in the tall mountains, deep valleys and expansive forests. That beauty has also caused the state to be isolated due to the difficulty of building roads and transportation of materials. Trees cover three-quarters of the state. The steep inclines of the rivers prevent navigation of many of the waterways due to rapids and rocks. However, those mountains and forests provide a wealth of raw materials for the industry of the state.

Boards, Superintendents Should Collaborate More
Friction among school board members and between boards and superintendents makes recruiting people to serve on boards or work as administrators harder, Dr. Paul Houston, executive director of the American Association of School Administrators, told Education World. A recent report from the New England School Development Council offers strategies to help build strong school board-superintendent teams. Included: Practical suggestions from the report and comments from officials of national school leadership organizations. School boards need to focus more on setting policy and less on micro-managing superintendents and school systems, according to a New England School Development Council (NESDC) report. The council advises boards and superintendents to work more as teams and less as adversaries.

VIRGINIA COLLEGES FAIL TO TEACH BASICS
RICHMOND, VA., 13 February 1998: Students can graduate from Virginia's leading colleges and universities without studying basic subjects such as English and mathematics, according to a new study by the Virginia Association of Scholars (VAS). The findings were presented to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) at its Friday, February 13, 1998, meeting. The Troubling State of General Education: A Study of Six Virginia Public Colleges and Universities finds that students can avoid basic subjects and fulfill graduation requirements by selecting from a hodgepodge of narrow, dumbed-down, and trivial courses. The study also shows a striking difference between today's nearly meaningless requirements and the rigorous general education provided students in the past. The report was issued by VAS, the state affiliate of the National Association of Scholars, an organization of college and university faculty dedicated to high academic standards and intellectual freedom. The American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a national nonpartisan organization of alumni and trustees dedicated to academic freedom and excellence, endorsed the report and called on trustees, alumni, and taxpayers to demand higher standards. Former National Endowment for the Humanities chairman Lynne V. Cheney warned that students who lack knowledge of "basic landmarks of history and culture are unlikely to be prepared to make the complex choices today's life demands." Former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett in turn criticized the colleges and universities for "not demanding a rigorous education of our students" and called upon them to insist on higher standards of academic excellence.

A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE STATE DIRECTOR Jenny Phillips I reside in rural America. I was born and raised in a small West Virginia community, and I would not change that experience for any other. I know the warmth of community caring, the benefits of knowing your neighbor, and the freedom of small town life. Even with all these advantages there are also many challenges facing rural West Virginia. With this in mind, I welcome you to the web page for USDA Rural Development in West Virginia. I hope this site gives you a better understanding of our role in your community and rural areas. You will find office locations, service areas, personnel contacts and program information. You will find out what we do, where we do it and what we offer to help you improve your life and your community's life. Our mission is to "help people." To provide this assistance we work in partnership with community and civic leaders, as well as non-profit, public and private sector organizations, to develop, sustain and improve rural communities throughout West Virginia. USDA Rural Development programs can assist with a wide range of rural community needs, including affordable housing, business and industry loans, water and wastewater projects, and community facility needs.
