Veterinary Medicine Veterinarians, assisted by veterinary technicians, treat and prevent the illnesses of pets, livestock, marine animals, and sporting animals. It also is their job to prevent diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans and to protect the public from residues of herbicides, pesticides, and antibiotics used in food production. They may be involved in wildlife preservation and conservation. Also, veterinarians play an important role in agriculture. They use their knowledge to increase food production through genetics, animal feed production, and preventive medicine. The profession has assumed a major role in the advance of research in the medical uses of atomic energy, in the development of tranquilizers, corticosteroids and other pharmaceuticals, and in the study of space medicine. Veterinary medicine involves the study of the immunological relationship of viruses in humans and animals, and protects and advances human health by studying diseases, such as cancer, arthritis, anemia, and heart disease, that are common to man and animals. Also of benefit to humans is research that is performed relative to aging, organ transplantation, and ulcers. The realization of the importance of animal care is creating new opportunities for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. More specialties mean more jobs and greater choice for individuals who possess an affinity and love for animals combined with the calm competence and fearlessness necessary to handle and manage them.

Allied developments for Medical School facilities at the University's second teaching hospital, the Western General, will complement this. Development Veterinary Medicine and society Programme development In June 1996, Prof. Dr E.N. Noordhuizen-Stassen was appointed professor in human- animal relationship (subsidised by the KNMvD) and has thereafter been the acting programme leader. Since that time the scope of the research programme has been re-directed. The main sources of inspiration have been the demand of society for specific knowledge and the aim to understand how people directly and indirectly influence the health and welfare of animals. New multidisciplinary research projects have therefore been developed: The first project concerns: "The effects of milk production level on individual adaptive capacity in high yielding cows". This project focuses on the immunological, behavioural and ethical aspects of high-yielding dairy cattle and is a joint project of Utrecht University, Wageningen University and ID-DLO. External support has been obtained from the NWO-programme: "Limits to animal welfare and animal production" and has led to the appointment of two AIO's (1-1-1998 till 31-12-2001). This project is now part of IVR-programme 14. The second project concerns: 'The epidemiological and ethological study of disturbed locomotion and claw disorders in dairy cattle: impact of floor characteristics on welfare', and is a cooperative effort between Utrecht University, Wageningen University and IMAG-DLO. This project focuses on the behavioural, pathological and mechanical aspects of cow-floor interaction. External support has been obtained from the NWO-programme: "Limits to animal welfare and animal production", leading to the appointment of one AIO (1-3-1999 till 31-3-2003). The impact of floor conditions on animal welfare in dairy cattle is now considered as one of the main welfare problems, but has been neglected as such for a long time. The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries (LNV) will therefore grant this project another AIO (1-7-1999 till 1-7-2003) in order to create proposals for animal handling and floor designs in dairy cattle husbandry.

Research Facilities Development Fund Application Guidelines The Research Facilities Development Fund supports the improvement, renovation and construction of research facilities at the University, as well as the acquisition of major items of equipment used in support of research. Please send your contributions to veterina@lek.si Current Case Study: First Outbreak of Dermatophilosis in Cattle in Slovenia Dermatophilosis, or skin streptotrichosis, is an exudative skin disease of domestic animals, mainly cattle, sheep, horses and goats. The disease is caused by aerobic or facultative anaerobic actinomycetes Dermaophilus congolensis. Changes appear in the form of pustules and calloused scabs, which are firmly attached to the skin. The contribution describes the first laboratory confirmed outbreak of dermatophilosis in Slovenia. Our mission is to improve the health, diet and welfare of animals, which in turn advances and promotes the quality of people's lives.
