Humic and fulvic acids are main components of humus, which again forms the soil organic matter. Especially in organic farming, in agriculture and horticulture, but also in greenhouse-farming, humic acids both in liquid and soluble granule, are applied as plant growth stimulants and soil conditioner. Humates have a very high biological activity, they improve the immunity, the plant metabolism and promote the development of root-systems. Sodium- and potassium salts of humic acids - also called humates - are applied to combat environmental pollution caused by toxic impacts of herbicides, pesticides and heavy metals. Humic substances immobilize heavy metals, they remedy degraded and contaminated soils. Also they are applied in drinking water- and waste water treatment, in erosion control, waste disposal and in the prEvntion of excess salinated soils. Wastewater treatment and additive drilling fluids are one of the main industrial segments for using sodium and potassium humates, which have been won from lignites/ leonardites. Our sodium humates are applied as natural colorants in the paper- and cardboard-industry. Furthermore they are used for the immobilization of enzymes, as absorbents, adsorbents, defoamers, in the battery industry, and finally as liquefiers in the ceramics-, cement- and concrete-industry. Various research trials conducted worldwide have all shown positive results concerning the use of humic substance as an organic feed ingredient. Humic substances a not only the immune system of animals is improved, by forming a protection film on the mucosa cells of the intestinal system, humic acids provide a resorptive effect of e.g. toxic substances. Furthermore the addition of sodium humate has antibacterial, adsorptive and ergotropic effects. Humic acids may also serve as an alternative to antibiotics.

T he College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell is one of the most successful colleges in the country in competing for resources that support biomedical, agricultural, and veterinary research. Major funding for both research and training is provided by the State of New York, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the US Department of Agriculture. Corporations, foundations, professional groups, and individual benefactors also provide substantial support. The college traditionally has excelled in the fields of infectious diseases, reproductive biology, and the basic mechanisms underlying health and disease that are common to animals and humans. Recently, major emphasis has been given to clarifying those mechanisms at cellular and molecular levels as well as to the identification of the animal genome. Pioneering research of the college includes development of vaccines for:
  • canine distemper
  • canine parvovirus
  • feline calicivirus
  • feline pneumonitis
  • Marek's disease
  • bovine viral diarrhea
  • bovine mastitis
Current major research projects hold promise for improving human as well as animal health through research:
  • hepatitis and liver cancer
  • cardiac arrhythmias
  • muscular dystrophy
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
  • diabetes and insulin secretion
  • FIV (a disease of cats that resembles AIDs)

Research at The University of Edinburgh
Edinburgh is not only one of the largest universities in the United Kingdom, but one of the most wide-ranging in its teaching and research activities. In 1999-2000, the University of Edinburgh was successful in attracting 294 research contracts and awards totalling £42.6 million (over $63.8 million) for basic and applied research across all clinical areas. This is an increase of over 26% on the previous year's figures and clearly demonstrates the University's position as a leading clinical research centre.

The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine
The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine aims to produce leading edge, internationally recognised research. It has sought to advance its research reputation with the creation of internationally competitive interdisciplinary research centres and groups for clinical and non-clinical research scientists.

Research Training and Career Development
grants support special training in laboratory animal science, comparative pathology, and comparative medicine at the pre- and post-doctoral levels through both individual and institutional awards. Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their applications with DCM program staff prior to submission. NCRR's Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) supports research training and career development through the following awards: Comparative Medicine Career Development Opportunities
  • (K01) Special Emphasis Research Career Awards (SERCA)
The SERCA in Pathology and Comparative Medicine provides five years of support to assist veterinarians motivated toward research careers to develop new skills and knowledge necessary to become independent biomedical investigators in animal-based research. Candidates for the SERCA must have post-graduate experience in animal medicine and plan to direct their careers to biomedical investigations that explore animal models. The SERCA offers in-depth research experiences in a variety of research areas (basic, applied, and clinical) related to a wide range of biological disciplines. The applicant's research should focus on a central area such as animal models, pathology, biotechnology, normative biology, animal disease, or animal welfare. Applications for a K01 award must be submitted on Public Health Service

Strategy
Mission: to provide the academic and physical environment to foster science at the highest international level, and thus to be pivotal players in the knowledge driven economy, through targeted research in comparative medicine. The Faculty will focus on the need for fundamental research in the post-genomic environment to enrich and develop understanding of cellular functions in health and disease across species. The Faculty will strengthen links between laboratory-based science and clinical application to ensure that veterinary medicine and general biomedical science derive maximum benefit from our comparative research expertise. The Faculty's plans for development of its Garscube campus site require the expansion and upgrading of its existing research laboratory space. A major initiative in this respect is the construction of a core facility for the Institute of Comparative Medicine which will link our existing research blocks and bring all laboratory researchers on the site under one roof. The £6.7M development has been assured by a £5.08M award from the Wellcome Trust Science Research Investment Fund, with £1.62M from the University of Glasgow.

Gaulton, Ph.D. Vice Dean for Research and Research Training School of Medicine DATE: November 1, 2002 SUBJECT: Call for Proposals for Health Research Faculty Development Block Grant The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania plans to award tobacco settlement funds to the University of Pennsylvania at the end of January 2003 to support high-quality, health-related research. The University has decided to allocate a portion of these funds to support outstanding multi-disciplinary research of strategic importance to Penn. Scientists within each school are encouraged to apply for exploratory/developmental grants in: Bioterrorism and Emerging Infectious Diseases For the purposes of this program, Bioterrorism is defined as the distribution of a biological agent in such a way as to cause widespread havoc. The ideal biowarfare agent is easily prepared, readily disseminated, transmitted from person to person efficiently, and causes high morbidity and mortality. CDC-defined Class A and C agents will receive priority. Emerging infectious diseases include pathogens that have become greater public health problems in recent years either because of recent transmission into the human population or that have become more prevalent due to drug resistance, breakdowns in the public health system, broader dissemination, or other factors. The committee plans to select a different scientific topic in future years.
