    http://new.altvetmed.com/
Welcome Welcome to the AltVetMed Web Site, your home for finding information about complementary and alternative therapies in veterinary medicine (CAVM). The AltVetMed site was founded in January 1996, by Jan Agar Bergeron, VMD and Susan Gayle Wynn, DVM. Recently, the site was moved to a new server and has undergone its first major design overhaul since its inception. With the new design, we hope to bring you much more information than we offered in the past. When the site was first launched, there were no other sites on the Web that dealt with CAVM. The largest and most visited veterinary medicine site on the Web at that time was NetVet, and most major veterinary associations did not even have Web sites. Today, all the major veterinary associations, veterinary schools, and CAVM organizations have Web sites. Many holistic veterinarians also have their own Web sites, and many conventional veterinary practices do as well. All of these new sites provide us with the opportunity to provide links to extensive information that was unavailable six years ago. Therefore, the new, redesigned AltVetMed site will become a portal for information on CAVM, as well as selected information on conventional veterinary medicine and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in general. We will continue to offer our own content in the form of basic articles that provide an overview of various CAVM modalities and articles that provide specific information about selected disease problems. We are unable to answer individual questions about specific pet health problems for practical and legal reasons.

She completed a one year internship in small animal medicine at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington DC, where she developed an interest in complementary veterinary medicine by watching successful treatment of many chronic cases by a homeopathic veterinarian. When she returned to Atlanta in 1989, she co-founded Pets Are Loving Support for people with AIDS, an organization that financially and physically supports people with AIDS to enable them to keep their pets. She recently completed post-doctoral research in viral and vaccine immunology at Emory University School of Medicine . Her research concentrated on the potential for canine vaccine viruses to cause autoimmune thyroiditis in susceptible animals. Dr Wynn has served as faculty for Evening at Emory in the Searching for Medical Alternatives course, and assisted in teaching Emory medical students in complementary medicine. She is the Executive Director of the Georgia Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, which was founded in 1994 to educate veterinarians about the advantages of using complementary medical methods. There has been a popular surge of support for natural medicines, whether in human or animal fields, over the last two decades. This is running side-by-side with the new environmental and health awareness, that is already becoming a feature of the 21st Century.
Homoeopathy (a.k.a. Homeopathy or Homœopathy), Herbs and Acupuncture are the most well-known of the natural therapies used. They will be briefly described here. There are, however, several other worthwhile branches of alternative medicine, also referred to as holistic, natural or complementary medicine. Identity problems aside, what is embraced by these therapies is a common thread, that of applying a stimulus to the body's own healing powers. Herbs alone also exert a direct pharmacological effect and did, in fact, spawn conventional medicine.
The therapies that I use are Homoeopathy, Acupuncture, Moxibustion, Herbs, Tissue Salts, Aromatherapy, Bach Flowers, Laser, Ultra-sound, Chiropractic, Nutrition. I add nutrition because, without it, I believe there is no good medicine. As a basis of all my work, I recommend a natural, clean, fresh, varied, preferably organic diet, suited to the evolved needs of each species.
Tales abound, of cures by alternative medicine, where conventional medicine has failed. The underlying theme, however, is that a condition is only curable if a) the body has a mechanism of repair or rebalancing, b) we are able to find an appropriate stimulus for that mechanism and c) we take all possible steps to remove the obstacles to recovery. If these three things are in place, we can witness a cure, no matter what the conventional prognosis or the name of the disease or disorder.

    Tribune staff reporter
May 23, 2001 A lternative medical treatments for animals have some value after all, a veterinarians group has decided in backing off from a proposed policy that would have discouraged the practices. Instead, revised guidelines adopted by the executive board of the Schaumburg-based American Veterinary Medical Association say the treatments, ranging from acupuncture to more exotic treatments such as herbalism, can plays a legitimate role in animal health care. "The AVMA recognizes the interest in and use of these modalities and is open to their consideration," the new guidelines state. The guidelines contrast sharply with those proposed in December by an AVMA task force. They called unconventional medicine "unproven practices." Those proposals sent a chill through the growing ranks of veterinarians who use alternative care and say animals at times can benefit from non-traditional treatments. Also, there were fears that if the 65,000-member AVMA adopted a tighter policy, such as demanding more scientific proof of certain treatments' effectiveness, some states might respond by restricting veterinarians' practices. The new guidelines, however, "leave the door open for those who want to use these treatments," said Dr. Craig Smith, an AVMA staff member.
