Veterinary Acupuncturist Dr. Rose Di Leva
integrates the principles of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and Acupuncture into her western medical background. The practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture in veterinary medicine is the most fascinating thing I've ever done. It has numerous applications alone and in conjunction with conventional medicine. Most clients find out that their pets respond well some even look forward to having their acupunture treatments. Treatments generally range from 10 to 30 minutes. Most pets become relaxed and sleep afterwards. Alternative Services Conventional Services

... In The Press The Chinese Concept of Qi Rose DiLeva VMD, MS, CVA WHAT IS Qi? Qi in its immaterial form travels along pathways in an orderly fashion and in a timely fashion. These pathways are called meridians. Qi protects the body. Qi warms and maintains heat in the body. Qi is the very root of all activity and movement. It moves in association with blood and lymph. Qi also functions to maintain organs and substances of the body in place. This is its holding function. Qi keeps blood in the blood vessels, capillaries, arteries and veins. A deficiency of this kind of qi could result in hemorrhage, blood moving out of blood vessels, prolapsed rectum, hemorrhoids or miscarriage. Qi is also responsible for transformation in the body, for converting food into blood, qi and fluids like saliva, sweat and urine. Functionally, there are more than thirty types of Qi. "Yuan qi" is that qi which we inherit from our parents at conception. This is the basis of an individuals constitution. It cannot be replenished during one's lifetime. "Wei qi" is ones defensive system, that which circulates close to the surface of the body. Wei qi protects our bodies from invasion by wind, cold, heat or damp. These are referred to as External Pernicious Influences. If you stood out in the cold rain, it would be the strength of your Defensive/Wei (pronounced way-chee) that would determine if you fall ill or not. The modern equivalent is the immune system, its associated cellular components and the lymphatic system.

Parkvets: "Alternative" Veterinary Medicine - Your Critical Appraisal Required
by Graham Peck
Introduction
This article provides information for owners who may be considering "alternative" treatment for their pets. The aim is to take a critical look at "alternative" veterinary medicine. It is then up to you to decide, using information from this article and other sources whether you feel the validity of particular "alternative" medicine regime has been proven to your own satisfaction. I feel a questioning attitude by an owner to any proposed treatment regime is desirable and not just for "alternative" treatments but for conventional veterinary medicine as well. Trust in your pet's healthcare advisors is necessary, but blind acceptance is not the responsible approach. Why should you be concerned? I qualified as a vet in the mid 1980's. One was aware of osteopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture, but no information was provided about the claims of these treatment regimes in relation to animals at veterinary college. Ones interest was piqued since they appeared to be novel and condoned by human medicine. This was reinforced by the occasional anecdotal story of a "miracle" cure of someone's cat or dog. Nevertheless to most vets acupuncture etc remained a fringe aspect of veterinary medicine. Since that time a large number of additional "alternative" medicine practices have appeared primarily for human treatment but increasingly adopted for use in animals. My concern lies with the way that this whole class of practices is achieving acceptance by veterinary surgeons, owners, professional bodies and the politicians with seemingly little scrutiny of what they are buying into.

Holistic veterinary medicine is a comprehensive approach to healing and healthcare that incorporates ancient and novel methods, conventional diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.
The practice of this form of medicine is guided by philosophy of holism that looks deeply at causal factors of disharmony and seeks to correct these rather than just suppressing the symptoms or cutting out the end-stage pathology. Further information Planetary herbology ( www.planetherbs.com

Many alternative therapies are traditional practices that have been used by non-western cultures for thousands of years—Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture or Indian Ayurvedic medicine, for example. Alternative medicine encompasses a wide variety of therapies and treatments that until recently have largely been practiced outside of mainstream western medicine. As many of these therapies demonstrate their usefulness, they have become more widely available and better understood, leading many to prefer the term "complementary medicine". This name acknowledges the view that alternative practices offer treatments that work with and complement conventional western medicine. Therapies termed "holistic" typically mean that the health care practitioner considers the whole animal, including physical, mental, and emotional aspects.
As alternative medicine becomes an increasingly common component of veterinary medicine, it is important to remember that these therapies are not benign and can be harmful if practiced by untrained or poorly trained individuals. When choosing this pathway use the same discretion as you would in choosing any health care practitioner, these systems are no less difficult to learn and practice than conventional ones.

    Applications of Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine offers excellent options for the treatment of animal athletes, for chronic conditions, or for geriatric care. Both dogs and horses have shown excellent responses to chiropractic manipulation, as well as acupuncture and herbal medicine. Chiropractic care provides great benefits for athletes of all species. Acupuncture can provide pain relief when dealing with arthritis.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has existed for 3-4 thousand years. It has been continually modified over this time. The formulas we use are based on ancient recipes but modified by us after trials in our clinic. Animals have diseases humans do not have. For this reason, we believe it is important to use medications designed for them, rather than use herbal remedies designed for humans. We are committed to providing the best herbal supplements possible. We have some of our more commonly used formulations in pre-packaged, pre-labeled bottles. However, we currently have over 100 formulas available. If a veterinarian has a patient with a condition not covered by one of our prepackaged formulas, we invite him or her to contact us for specific formulas.

SUBSCRIBE Alternative Therapies for Horses By Charlene Strickland Promoting Performance with Alternative Veterinary Medicine You’ve planned the season’s shows, working out the details of entries, trainer, van and tack. The focal point remains your horse’s performance—how will you maintain your equine athlete’s mental and physical strengths? Performance depends on wellness, and today you can choose among conventional and alternative therapies. While traditional veterinary medicine will probably be your initial choice, systems like acupuncture and chiropractic can resolve physical problems. Conventional modalities, or approaches to therapy, rely on drugs or other intervention, yet they can’t succeed in every case. For issues that challenge even conventional veterinary medicine, holistic veterinary medicine goes beyond “fix the problem” and considers the whole horse. Instead of following step-by-step, “cookbook” directions, holistic views consider the animal in context. Kimberly Henneman, DVM, Park City, UT, said, “Look at the whole animal, and consider emotional problems, stress and environment.” Just as human medicine accepts other teachings and techniques, equine practitioners also realize the benefits of alternative therapies. These methods—many the same that you may have experienced in your own medical treatments—may help your horse stay sound, healthy, energetic and content.

    Introduction

    No artificial preservatives!
The natural way to ease joint pain, get rid of fleas and ticks, cure allergies, prevent diseases, …
These claims and dozens more face dog owners looking for everything from nourishing food to remedies for parasite infestations and cures for disease. Oftentimes the declarations are accompanied by criticism of traditional veterinary medicine, prepared diets, and pharmaceutical treatments, leaving dog owners in a quandary about canned and dry foods, vaccinations, drugs, and other pet care products. It is as difficult to weave among the claims for dog diets and health as it is to find the right combination of traditional and alternative products for human families. Raw diets, home-cooked diets, herbs, homeopathic remedies, acupuncture, magnets, massage, acupressure, chiropractic – all these and more are touted as necessary to maximum canine health, leaving dog owners with a dizzying array of choices.

We carefully assess and address which medical options to integrate for each individual pet's overall care and well-being. As always prevention is the best way to maintain good health.
