The 145th Annual Vermont-NEA Educators' Convention is an occasion for celebrating the tremendous professionalism and the tireless dedication of our teachers and school support staff from Bennington to Richford, from St. Albans to St. Johnsbury. And there are many achievements to celebrate: The number of Vermont high school students taking a core curriculum of four years of English, and three years each of math, science, and social studies has more than tripled since 1982. Vermont's high school completion rate has remained steady for the past 10 years at about 85 percent despite profound changes in family structure, work, and general society. By contrast, in the 50s, nearly half of all high school students quit before graduating. Most handicapped and disabled Vermont students were taught at home or in institutions, rather than experiencing the equal education opportunities that exist today in Vermont's very inclusive public school classrooms. More than 50 percent of Vermont students continue with post-secondary education, over 20 percent more than three decades ago.

Successful Completion of Approved Program What is an approved program? The Teacher Education programs were developed by program faculty to meet the VT State Department of Education Regulations. They were then reviewed and approved by the Vermont Standards Board for Professional Educators (VSBPE) as meeting the State Regulations. What is meant by successfully completed? Successful completion of your program includes earning a minimum grade of B in your teaching internship, completing all program requirements (including the portfolio), earning an overall GPA of 3.0 or above, and receiving a positive recommendation from your UVM supervisor with written input by your cooperating teacher . As PRAXIS becomes an integral part of the teacher education programs, passing PRAXIS will be considered part of "successful completion" of your program. Who determines what must be included in my portfolio? Ultimately, it is your responsibility to determine the work that will be included to demonstrate your competence and growth as a beginning professional educator. However, as you create a very personalized portfolio, it must also meet the criteria established by your program and by the Vermont Standards Board of Professional Educators. Program faculty provide students with materials to guide you through the process of creating a portfolio as an integral part of your program. This portfolio fulfills program specific requirements as well as those established by the Vermont Standards Board for Professional Educators as listed in the Results Oriented Program Approval process (ROPA-Revised) and titled “Level I Teaching Licensure Portfolio.” You must directly address the Five Standards for Vermont Educators (1.
