    Brief History
    History
Founded in August 2000 and formerly known as the Division of Turkish, Department of Oriental Languages and Cultures. The Department of Oriental Languages and Cultures originally had only two sections: Korean and Russian. Then, under the direction of Late President Chiang Kai-shek, the Turkish section was added, and with the permission of the Ministry of National Defense, the department invited Liu En-Lin as the founding director. Later, Ma Min-Dao also joined the faculty.
In addition to over sixty million people in Turkey, a greater number of Turkish-speaking population scattered around northwestern provinces of mainland China, Central Asia, Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Due to the continuous changes undergone by the Turkish-speaking peoples, they cover a vast area, and the their language and history have drawn the attention of western scholars; consequently, the study of Turcology became popular. Major renowned universities in Europe and the United States have research institutes on Turcology and host academic conferences periodically.
In 1971, our government broke off diplomatic relations with Turkey when they gave diplomatic recognition to the Communist government of mainland China. Since then, the Department has played a significant role in maintaining vital cultural exchanges between Turkey and the R.O.C. In addition to assisting relevent authorities by hosting visiting dignitaries and students and offering advice and translation services, we also sent students to Turkey for further studies. In 1989, the China External Trade Development Council established a Business Center in Istanbul. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs established an Economic and Cultural Office in Ankara, capital of Turkey, too, which consequently strengthened substantial business and diplomatic ties. In 1993, our university formed sister-school relationship with Ankara University, and signed an agreement on academic cooperation. Mutual cultural exchanges have since been further enhanced.

    97. The Story Of The Turkish Language From The Ottoman Empire Until Today
Article about the story of the turkish language from the Ottoman Empire until today. The story of the turkish language from the Ottoman Empire until today.
    http://www.business-with-turkey.com/tourist-guide/turkish_language.htm
The story of the Turkish Language from the Ottoman Empire until today During the Ottoman Empire (1453~1920), the Turks were one of many linguistic and ethnic groups living in Turkey. There were 3 languages used at that time: Arabic which was used as the primary language of religion; Persian which was the language of art, refined literature, and diplomacy; and at the official level, the Ottoman Turkish that was used only for the administration of the empire. Members of the civil, military, and religious elite talked and conducted their business in Ottoman Turkish, which was a mixture of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Ottoman Turkish not only borrowed vocabulary from Arabic and Persian but also lifted entire expressions and syntactic structures out of these languages and incorporated them into the Ottoman idiom. The multiple linguistic influences on Ottoman Turkish caused difficulties in spelling and writing. Turkish, Persian, and Arabic belong to 3 different language families: Ural-Altaic, Indo-European and Semitic, respectively. Phonological, grammatical, and etymological principles are quite different among the 3 families. For these reasons, during the 19th century intellectuals began to call for a reform of the language. They wanted a language that would be easier to read and write and contain more purely Turkish words.
