    History
The city was founded c.300 B.C. by Seleucus I, king of Syria, and named for his father Antiochus, a Macedonian general. Situated at the crossing of north-south and east-west trade routes, the city soon became a rich commercial center. Antioch was occupied by Pompey in 64 B.C. and quickly became an important Roman military, commercial, and cultural center. The Romans built great temples, a forum, a theater, baths, aqueducts, and other public buildings. The two main streets, at right angles to each other, were lined with marble colonnades and adorned with temples, palaces, and statues. Antioch was an early center of Christianity; Peter and Paul preached there. It was in Antioch that the followers of Jesus were first called Christians after they severed themselves from the synagogue about 20 years after Jesus' death. Antioch is one of the three original patriarchates (see

A short history of the Kurdish Question
PARIS, Jan 2 1998 (AFP) - The Kurdish question is one that has plagued the governments of Iraq and Turkey as Kurds struggle to create an independent state within their territories. The Kurdish people, the majority of whom are devout Sunni Moslems, have always opposed subjugation by other nations. Following Turkish defeat in World War I and the fall of the Ottoman Empire, their demands for an independent Kurdish state were recognised under the Treaty of Sevres (1920). This treaty was renegotiated three years later after the Turkish victory over Greece, led by the founder of the secular Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. It was replaced by the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) which recognised Jewish and Christian minorities in Armenia and Greece but failed to make any mention of a Kurdish State. The Kurdish people have since been fighting for an independent Kurdistan in the region astride the Zagros Mountains in northern Iraq and the eastern extension of the Taurus Mountains in southern Turkey across the Mesopotamian plane and the upper reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates river. An estimated 8-12 million Kurds live in Turkey, principally in the south-east and a further 3 million live in Iran, four million in northern Iraq under UN protection, and 1 million in Syria. There are also small Kurdish populations in the former Soviet Union.

When discussing history it is always difficult to know from which period to actually begin. The earlier civilizations of Anatolia cannot be ignored. Some historians take the advent of the Turks into Anatolia in the 11C as the "beginning". If this were to be the case then history is limited to dating from the nomadic Turks. It has to be noted that civilizations are never built without foundations. Just like a wall made of bricks, they are all established upon former civilizations. Therefore it is quite possible to see traces of the very earliest cultures inherent in those that followed. If we want to speak about Turkey, we have to begin by going back to the very early ages as the present country is an extension and mixture of people who come from various origins.

F rom the first Thanksgiving to today's turkey burgers, turkeys are a part of the American tradition dating back hundreds of years. However, many of us still know little about these wonderful birds. The following are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about turkeys. E arly explorers to the New World quickly acquired a taste for turkey and took birds back to Europe. By the 1500s, turkeys were being raised domestically in Italy, France and England. When the Pilgrims and other settlers arrived in America, they were already familiar with raising and eating turkey and naturally included it as part of their Thanksgiving feast. Some experts think the first Thanksgiving dinner was served by the Pilgrims in 1621. Others credit the settlers of Virginia's Jamestown with celebrating the first Thanksgiving as their version of England's ancient Harvest Home Festival. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, supposedly as a response to a campaign organized by magazine editor Sara Joseph Hale. In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving Day forward one week, as it is presently celebrated. B enjamin Franklin, who proposed the turkey as the official United States' bird, was dismayed when the bald eagle was chosen over the turkey. Franklin wrote to his daughter, referring to the eagle's "bad moral character," saying, "I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country! The turkey is a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America."
