    INTRODUCTION
Background: Following independence from France in 1956, President Habib BOURGIUBA established a strict one-party state. He dominated the country for 31 years, repressing Islamic fundamentalism and establishing rights for women unmatched by any other Arab nation. In recent years, Tunisia has taken a moderate, non-aligned stance in its foreign relations. Domestically, it has sought to diffuse rising pressure for a more open political society.

Home Recommend Marweb Bookmark Marweb Marweb Solutions Maghreb Arab Guides Maghreb Algeria Libya Mauritania ... Tunisia Maghreb Arab Search Maghreb Algeria Libya Mauritania ... Tunisia The Magreb really is different. The faithful surfer on the Marweb website will be forgiven a distinct feeling that he has come across this perhaps not entirely original statement somewhere before, but there are truisms which impose themselves so overwhelmingly that they cannot be avoided, even at the risk of losing the gloss that sophisticated travel writers love to give their advice to travelers.
The five Maghreb states are different not only in comparison with other countries but internally, from region to region, from town to town, geographically, ethnographically, architecturally, and politically. Not perhaps in the culinary arts, which are basically similar throughout- though, of course, at very distinctive levels - but certainly different in flora and fauna, and above all, in their way of life. Not just different, but totally unrelated. Yet in a splendidly oriental paradox this very vareity is repeated on all the diverse planes. No less a paradox is the derivation of the name Maghreb, from gharib, to go to the unknown, which in the case of the Arab conquerors meant the west, however decidedly part of the Moslem east.
Mere geographical and climatic variations can indeed be expected, are even demanded by the jaded modern traveler, in so fair a slice of the African continent, stretching from the Atlantic halfway across the width of the Mediterranean against a superb backdrop of rugged peaks and cliffs unequaled on this scale, before gradually flattening to the long sweeps of fine sandy beaches hemming a deep blue sea on the eastern Tunisian coast.
