Bloody Mary and
Elizabeth I the Virgin Queen England briefly reverted to Catholicism during the reign of Mary Tudor who married the King of Spain, Philip II in 1554. When she died 4 years later, he proposed marriage to her sister Elizabeth I , the third child of Henry VIII. She declined and the King of France put in a claim to the throne on account of his marriage to Mary Queen of Scots - the great granddaughter of Henry VII. Queen Elizabeth settled the argument in 1587 by having Mary's head removed.

Until 1707, this section deals primarily with English history. England and Wales were formally united in 1536. In 1707, when Great Britain was created by the Act of Union between Scotland and England, English history became part of British history. For the early history of Scotland and Wales , see separate articles. Early Period to the Norman Conquest
Little is known about the earliest inhabitants of Britain, but the remains of their dolmens and barrows and the great stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury are evidence of the developed culture of the prehistoric Britons. They had developed a Bronze Age culture by the time the first Celtic invaders (early 5th cent. B.C. ) brought their energetic Iron Age culture to Britain. It is believed that Julius Caesar's successful military campaign in Britain in 54 B.C. was aimed at preventing incursions into Gaul from the island. In A.D.

With a large strapwork title cartouche, coats of arms, eight large Royal portrait medallions, a large inset plan of Lancaster, sailing ships, a mermaid, etc. Everything an antique map can be is realized here. Lancashire , a long, fairly narrow county oriented north-south, presented a problem for Speed and his engraver. Their solution was to border the map with portraits of "blessed peacemakers" as well as use a much smaller scale than usual. Despite its small scale, the map is rather uncluttered and the coastline is rendered clearly. In Speed's day much of Lancashire was still heavily wooded; however, clearing under the Tudors changed the uplands into a landscape of small hedged enclosures and isolated farms. Deposits of coal in the south and peat from the moorlands provided fuel for warmth and cooking; and a plethora of fish and fowl ensured a certain stability in local diet (the population was largely on the verge of poverty and subject to mortality through starvation after extremely poor harvests). Lancashire had a reputation for lax morality, loose living, and a high rate of concubinage and illegitimacy. Interestingly, it was also one of the most Catholic counties in the kingdom CONDITION REPORT (Please read carefully): The map has been priced accordingly. A great opportunity to own this famous and desirable 1676 Speed map for a fraction of its normal retail value. Overall visual effect once framed will be most pleasing.

The Department seeks to aid students in understanding both continuity and change: the complex, rapid changes of our times and their roots in and continuity with the past. History, while utilizing some of the methods of the social sciences, is humanistic in its approach and strives to integrate all past human experience. The Department attempts to foster the essential skills of the historian: scholarly inquiry and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, narrative, and effective oral and written communication. It aims to prepare students for both advanced professional training and for careers as diverse as teaching, law, government, journalism, and business. To accomplish these purposes, students are offered a wide variety of courses in every area of history as well as specialized colloquia, honors seminars, and independent study. History Honors Program : Students with high academic achievement, regardless of their major, are invited to participate in Honors seminars. Freshmen are chosen on the basis of SAT scores and their high school record. Students who maintain a cumulative index of 3.3 and complete a minimum of four Honors seminars with a B+ average will be eligible for a certificate of Honors in History upon graduation. Admission to the seminars is by permission of the department head.
