Hello!
Transplants For Children's Board of Directors and Staff welcome you to our website. Transplants For Children was organized in San Antonio in 1986 by Eric and Sharon Sutton, with the help of local supporters in response to their personal experience after trying to secure a liver transplant for their young son. Since then, TFC has served over 400 youngsters and their families in Bexar and the surrounding counties. Currently, the agency is actively engaged with over 265 families. Almost half of these young clients have been identified as in need of a transplant. The others and their families are adjusting to the post-transplant situations. Transplants For Children's mission is to assist organ and tissue transplant recipients and their families in effectively coping with the emotional, financial, and social challenges which arise before, during and after transplantation. If you wish to contact us in person, please give us a call us at 210-949-1212. Thanks for your support.

Doctors could soon be carrying out face transplants
A leading plastic surgeon is calling for a debate about whether face transplants should take place. Peter Butler said surgical techniques would allow the procedure to take place within the next six to nine months. But he said it was essential for a moral and ethical debate to take place before anyone underwent the operation.

Setback for animal to human transplants

Pigs are genetically modified to make organs compatible with humans
By Corinne Podger of BBC Science The Council of Europe has voted for a moratorium on clinical tests of animal organ transplants into human beings. The decision will be a heavy blow to researchers working on the technique, known as "xenotransplantation". It also means the global shortage of human donor organs will have to be solved some other way. Millions of dollars have already been poured into research on transplanting animal organs into humans. Transplants postponed indefinitely until more is known Most researchers have focused on pigs, which are highly compatible with humans - and by adding some human genes to specially bred pigs, it reduces the risk that transplanted animal organs will be rejected by their human recipients. But researchers have run up against persistent problems. These involve a number of viruses which - while harmless to pigs - might pose serious health risks to humans, and possibly cause new human diseases. While not banning the idea of animal organ transplants altogether, the council of Europe voted to ban clinical tests on real patients in Europe - and wants to see that ban extended worldwide.

    Organ Transplants from Animals:
    Examining the Possibilities
by Rebecca D. Williams "You'll need a liver transplant," Dr. Zeno says. She scribbles quickly on her prescription pad and dates it: April 17, 2025. "Take this to the hospital pharmacy and we'll schedule the surgery for Friday morning." The patient sighshe's visibly relieved that his body will be rid of hepatitis forever. "What kind of liver will it be?" he asks. "Well, it's from a pig," Zeno replies. "But it will be genetically altered with your DNA. Your body won't even know the difference." Obviously, this is science fiction. But according to some scientists, it could be a reality someday. An animal organ, probably from a pig, could be genetically altered with human genes to trick a patient's immune system into accepting it as its own flesh and blood. Called "xenotransplants," such animal-to-human procedures would be lifesaving for the thousands of people waiting for organ donations. There have been about 30 experimental xenotransplants since the turn of the century. Rebuilding Bodies Xenotransplants are on the cutting edge of medical science, and some scientists think they hold the key not only to replacing organs, but to curing other deadly diseases as well.

TRANSPLANTS ARE MIRACLES IN PROGRESS We must still understand that we are dealing with CANCER and not a common cold, so, there are discomforts and challenges, but they are manageable. You may lose your taste buds, your hair and some dignity, but you regain time and a whole bunch of fresh, virgin stem cells that are collected from your own body and then put back. Here is my spin on how my wife and I have worked with Myeloma, (and a spinal operation), and continue to do so everyday. We had the Transplant and came out the other side just fine; I am walking, carrying golf clubs, working out in a gym, eating, drinking and living a very happy, and probably, a higher quality of life than before. There is GREAT living after Chemo, Radiation, Hickman lines, Stem Cell Transplants and all of the other stuff you might experience. Establish a GREAT, POSITIVE ATTITUDE and sincere TRUST that you CAN get through it and you will. Only you can really believe and help you . Others can support you, but whatever you think in your own mind is the most important.

    You Are Not Alone
If you are losing your hair, you are not alone. By age 50, about half of all men and nearly 30 percent of women experience the condition referred to as "androgenetic alopecia," or "male pattern balding." This occurs as a result of genetic and hormone influences upon certain hair follicles, typically those on top of the scalp. Persons who undergo this type of hair loss have four options:

New microsurgical devices and better anti-rejection drugs have made possible the transplanting of skin, muscle and bone from a dead person to another in particular, those who suffer facial deformities. But the main roadblock to the procedure may be the ethical questions surrounding the issue. British plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Butler from London's Royal Free Hospital called for a debate on the ethics of face transplants.

Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplants Menu Treatments Transplantation In memory of Yossi who had a BMT at age 9yrs for leukaemia. This is his picture depicting the transplant. Picture reproduced by kind permission. Overview There are many different types of blood cell, but they all develop from stem cells. Most of these stem cells are found in the bone marrow (the soft inside part of the bone), although some are found in the blood (peripheral blood stem cells). Chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy damages normal cells as well as cancer cells. At high doses the bone marrow may be damaged or destroyed, and the patient may not be able to produce the necessary blood cells. In a Bone marrow transplant (BMT), marrow containing healthy stem cells is infused to replace those damaged by the high dose therapy, so that the patient can produce blood cells again. Alternatively a peripheral blood stem cell transplant (PBSCT) may be given. While blood is not as rich in stem cells as bone marrow advances in transplantation mean that PBSCT ("stem cell rescue") is increasingly being used in the treatment of certain cancers.
There are 3 types of transplant:
    Allogenic transplants are where marrow is donated by another person;

Review says Chromosome 6 is fascinating from a medical perspective, but gives it only 2 out of 4 stars.
    http://www.lubbockonline.com/news/050897/chromoso.htm
'Chromosome 6': a tale of intrigue, apes and organ transplants By Guy Powers
Knight-Ridder Newspapers - (KRT) A roundup of recent books: Four stars represents the reviewer's highest recommendation. Organ transplants once considered risky now are almost routine. But the odds against a perfect genetic match are astronomical, and until that hurdle is overcome, no organ transplant is a sure thing. In Robin Cook's ''Chromosome 6'' (Putnam, $24.95), a researcher has discovered a way to reduce the rejection rate to zero through genetic engineering - not in humans, but in apes. The result is an animal ''double'' whose organs are immediately available for ''harvest.'' The process is illegal, immoral in the eyes of animal rights activists, and highly attractive to sick people with lots of money. Which is good for GenSys, a company long on greed and short on scruples. It establishes a laboratory in Equatorial Guinea, an impoverished African nation willing to ignore improprieties in exchange for a steady cash flow. Animals are procured. Enhanced breeding takes place, fortified with human DNA. The creatures are then isolated on an island, awaiting the inevitable surgeon's knife. At first, all goes well. Profits snowball. Then mobster Carlo Franconi is assassinated just before testifying for the Feds. His body is then stolen from the New York City morgue. When it resurfaces, the head, hands and liver are missing. A pair of NYC forensic pathologists are determined to find out how and why Franconi disappeared.

    39. CHFpatients.com - Heart Transplant - Pregnancy And Transplant
Title Jefferson Study Evaluates Impact Of transplants on Pregnancy Presenter Editor,JeffNews Source JeffNews, August 1, 1995 Heart Recipients Pregnancy
    http://www.chfpatients.com/tx/txpregnancy.htm
Please read this! A reader recently e-mailed me, upset that this page made getting pregnant after a heart transplant sound like a bad idea - so I did further research. That research convinced me that getting pregnant after an organ transplant is very risky - but exactly how risky is impossible to know. The risks are worse for the baby than for the mother. In Medpseak (doctor talk), "successful" has a different meaning. In Medspeak, if 100 heart recipients get pregnant and two of them have fairly healthy babies but the other 98 babies die, then "women heart recipients can successfully have children" is a valid statement. Doctors are trained to think this way. Please be aware of this when reading medical studies.
    Pregnancy After Transplant
May, 2000 - Provided there is good organ function, pregnancy may be attempted. However, unpredictable problems can happen, raising concern among doctors and patients alike about the safety of pregnancy after heart transplant. Each group of organ recipients has its own issues and problems specific to the original disease and the specific transplanted organ. Immunosuppressive therapy must be maintained throughout pregnancy.
