Sometime in your computing life you will need to write at least one small programme. If you are using a unix type operational system (e.g. Linux, FreeBSD, etc) you will find out that making a GUI (Graphical User Interface) it is a really tough job since you will need to learn a lot about X-Windows programming. Fortunately Tcl/Tk and the unix extensions TclX/TkX can get you out of this mess. This new scripting language make the creation of complex user interfaces (like drop down menus, button, lists, etc) as easy as it can get! At the same time it separates the front from the back-end, allowing interaction with higher level languages like C/C++. This scripting language was firstly developed John K. Ousterhout

http://www.netpackx.com/Tcl_Tk/tcl_tk.html
We highly recommend the following books. The books are extremely useful if you wish to learn how to develop software in Tcl/Tk. [Incr Tcl/Tk] is a great book written on object oriented software development using Tcl/Tk. The book provides useful examples and demonstrates the power behind what many consider Tcl++. This book can simply be described as the “Tcl/Tk bible”. If you plan on doing any Tcl/Tk software development this book is a must. It covers both the basics from “what is a variable” to advanced topics such as C API development with Tcl/Tk. This book covers CGI with Tcl/Tk in a clean format and explains how different CGI methods such as cookies, forms and security are implemented. The book also comes with a real handy CGI Tcl library that provide most of the basic procedures for Tcl/CGI development. Expect is the most popular extension for Tcl and after reading the book you will understand why. If you need it automated then expect “Expect” to get the job done. Effective Tcl/Tk programming expands on TK into the next level and covers some more advanced topics on how to develop software in TK. For example, does you GUI hang while a process is busy, well this book can help.

The Tcl/Tk and Python Scripting Environments
Review by Sean McGrath
When enough time has passed for someone to write a history of programming in the 20th century, one curious fact will stand out the most influential programming languages tend to go through a gestation period in which word of mouth and Internet FAQs are more important means of spreading the news than published books. The solitary book, or at most, pair of books, devoted to teaching such languages often becomes a veritable "bible" to its community: shared, dog-eared, and tattered, read, reread, and revered by the faithful. Over time, with the slow, sure confidence of continental drift, more books covering such languages appear until a mainstream computing technology is born. The C Programming Language , by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, Prentice Hall, 1988) and The Camel Book ( Programming Perl , Second Edition, by Tom Christiansen, Randal L. Schwartz, and Larry Wall, O'Reilly, 1996). To this shelf of fame I would like to posit the addition of two new volumes the "Atomic Snake" and "Sunset Paintbrush" books. Okay, so these pet names are mine and are unlikely to reach the status of industry vernacular. The former is my pet name for

Introduction
Tcl (tool command language) is an embeddable scripting language, and Tk is a graphical user interface toolkit based on Tcl. The Tcl/Tk project at Sun Labs is leading the development of Tcl and Tk and building the infrastructure to use them as a universal scripting platform for the Internet. A good example of Tcl/Tk capabilities is the tcolor script found in /usr/local/bin. This script allows manipulation of color values by RGB, CMY, or HSB values. The program also uses the X11 color names and can be used for the selection of foreground and background colors for any X11 application.

Tcl/Tk Cookbook - Introduction
Tcl, Tool Command Language, is an interpreted language with programming features, available across platforms running Unix, Windows and the Apple Macintosh operating system. Tk, the associated toolkit is an easy and efficient way of developing window based applications. Application tasks are split into modules and any new application specific task is written and compiled as C or C++ program and exported as a new Tcl command. Then a Tcl script, a series of existing and new Tcl commands, is composed to make the overall application. The scripting language, much like any shell language, has the ability to access and execute any other programs. Therefore several Tcl based applications could be made to work together to create or extend into a new application. Tcl consists of few syntax rules and a (still growing) set of core commands. Tk provides a higher level application programming interface for developing interactive widgets based applications, particularly for those who wish to concentrate on the functionality of their application and have no need to gain indepth programming expertise in the underlying window system and/or verbose toolkits such as OSF/Motif. Tcl/Tk is free, available now on Apple Macintosh and Windows and has a wide user base with a rich and growing mass of useful contributed software. The wider availabilty, usage and ease of teaching and learning of Tcl/Tk makes it the most appropriate tool for teaching the principles of Graphical User Interface design and development.

by Christopher Nelson Available now from: Chris Nelson's Tcl/Tk Programmer's Reference delivers on the promise of its title. It's the only work to cover all current Tcl and Tk commands. I particularly like his succinct examples; they effectively communicate Tcl's expressiveness and 'spirit'. Cameron Laird, co-author of "Regular Expressions" column on scripting languages
The Tcl/Tk Programmer's Reference was born out of my frustration with the on-line documentation that comes with Tcl/Tk; "man pages" in UNIX parlance. I found that many entries would have benefitted from cross-references and/or short examples. I set out to provide them. The largest part of the book is an alphabetical list of all the scripting commands in the standard Tcl/Tk distribution; "man pages on steroids" with lots of short examples. Here's the outline:
  • Part 1: A brief introduction to Tcl/Tk Not a tutorial but hopefully enough to get you started. Part 2: A long, alphabetical list of Tcl/Tk commands and globals with lots of cross references.
