The Twelfth President Of The United States Zachary Taylor Term: 1849 - 1850 First Lady: Margaret Mackall Smith Taylor Vice President: Millard Fillmore Millard Fillmore (1800-1874), 13th President Of The United States. A power in New York state politics, he was the successful Whig candidate for Vice President in 1848 and became president on the death of Zachary Taylor in 1850. As chief executive he showed a lack of leadership, and he failed to secure the Whig presidential nomination in 1852. Then, running on the Know-Nothing ticket in 1856, he was roundly defeated. Fillmore's political predilections lay with the National Republican party, but before 1826 he took little interest in politics. That year the Anti-Masonic excitement occasioned by the abduction of William Morgan, a Mason known to be publishing an exposé of the order, swept over western New York, and Fillmore, along with many National Republicans in that region, joined the Anti-Masonic movement. As a rising Anti-Masonic politician he became closely associated with the party's principal leaders, Thurlow Weed, William H. Seward, Francis Granger, and Albert Haller Tracy. In 1828, Fillmore went to Albany as an Anti-Masonic member of the state assembly, where he served three terms. He took a prominent part in securing the abolition of imprisonment for debt in the state. Elected to Congress as a Whig in 1836, Fillmore held office for three consecutive terms, declining renomination in 1842. He was a thorough-paced protectionist and, as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee (1840-1842), he marshaled the Whig tariff of 1842 through the House Of Representatives.

Encyclopedia Taylor, Zachary u r E Pronunciation Key Taylor, Zachary Mexican War he defeated the Mexicans at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma , drove them across the Rio Grande, and took Matamoros. Later he forced the surrender of the Mexican stronghold at Monterrey. In 1847 he won the decisive battle of Buena Vista in the face of great odds. A popular hero, Taylor was nominated for President on the Whig ticket, was elected, and assumed office in 1849. His nonpartisan tendencies were changed under the influence of Senator William H. Seward, and Taylor was soon a strong supporter of Whig policy. As President, he supported the Wilmot Proviso , which excluded slavery from all the territory acquired as a result of the Mexican War. He favored rapid admission of both California and New Mexico to the Union and strict limitation of Texas boundary claims. His free-soil views put him in opposition to the measures that were to become the Compromise of 1850 . After charges of corruption were lodged against members of his cabinet, he promised a reorganization, but was stricken with cholera morbus and died on July 9, 1850. The park, which now covers a total of 87 acres, is a National Landmark that played a significant role in Florida's early development. Construction of the fort began in 1845, shortly after Florida became a state. In 1850, the fort was named after U.S. President Zachary Taylor, who died in office earlier that year. Throughout the 1850s, construction on the Fort Taylor was slow. Yellow Fever, shortages of material and men, remoteness and hurricanes had slowed down progress. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Capt. John Brannon occupied the fort, placing it in Union hands. Key West was an important outpost for the Union because numerous blockade running ships were detained at Key West harbor and guarded by Fort Taylor's cannons. The 10 inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons at the fort had a range of three miles.
