Quick Facts The Presidents NBK Contents ZACHARY TAYLOR
Biography

Before he became PRESIDENT of the United States in 1849, Zachary Taylor served his country for nearly 40 years as an army officer. He fought with courage and honor in the War of 1812, The Black Hawk War, the Second Seminole War, and the Mexican War. At the close of the Mexican War he was the second highest officer in the United States Army. His term as president was cut short by death before much had been accomplished, but not before Taylor had made clear his devotion to the preservation of the Union, his absolute integrity, his unyielding firmness, and his modesty. Early Years Taylor was born near Barboursville in Orange County, Virginia, on November 24, 1784. His father was Lieutenant Colonel Richard Taylor, a veteran of the Revolutionary War and a member of a long-established Virginia family. Through his father, Zachary Taylor was related to President James MADISON and General Robert E. Lee. In the spring of 1785, when Zachary was only a few months old, Richard Taylor took his family west to Kentucky (then a part of Virginia) to settle on lands he had received for his service in the Revolution. His new plantation was along the banks of the Muddy Fork of Beargrass Creek, a few miles east of the village of Louisville. Here Zachary Taylor spent his boyhood. At first the population of this wilderness region was small. But gradually the frontier was pushed back, and life for the Taylors became more comfortable. The family grew to include six sons and three daughters. Zachary probably had little, if any, formal education beyond that received at a small school in Louisville. Additional instruction was likely given by him by his parents.

Zachary Taylor
Inaugural address, Monday, March 5, 1849
Quote Context Elected by the American people to the highest office known to our laws, I appear here to take the oath prescribed by the Constitution, and, in compliance with a time-honored custom, to address those who are now assembled. In the discharge of these duties my guide will be the Constitution, which I this day swear to "preserve, protect, and defend." For the interpretation of that instrument I shall look to the decisions of the judicial tribunals established by its authority and to the practice of the Government under the earlier Presidents, who had so large a share in its formation. To the example of those illustrious patriots I shall always defer with reverence, and especially to his example who was by so many titles "the Father of his Country." To command the Army and Navy of the United States; with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties and to appoint ambassadors and other officers; to give to Congress information of the state of the Union and recommend such measures as he shall judge to be necessary; and to take care that the laws shall be faithfully executedthese are the most important functions intrusted to the President by the Constitution, and it may be expected that I shall briefly indicate the principles which will control me in their execution. Chosen by the body of the people under the assurance that my Administration would be devoted to the welfare of the whole country, and not to the support of any particular section or merely local interest, I this day renew the declarations I have heretofore made and proclaim my fixed determination to maintain to the extent of my ability the Government in its original purity and to adopt as the basis of my public policy those great republican doctrines which constitute the strength of our national existence.

Zachary Taylor: A Presidential Unit Zachary Taylor was born 24 Nov 1784 in Montebello, Orange County, Virgina. He was elected the 12th US President and began his term on 4 March 1849, only serving a year before succumbing to cholera and dieing in July 1850. Political Party: Whig
Years Served: 4 March 1849 – 9 July 1850
Vice President(s): Millard Fillmore
Name of his parents: Lieutenant Colonel Richard Taylor and Sarah Dabney Strother
Wife’s name: Margaret Mackall Smith (1788-1852), on June 21, 1810
Yearly Salary as President: $25,000.00
Physical Stature: 5 feet, 8 inches
State of Birth: Virginia
“Zachary Taylor was raised near the Kentucky frontier on the family farm. There were no schools, so he studied with tutors. He joined the army in his teens and had a military career for forty years. He fought in many battles and became a hero. The Whig Party recognized his popularity and drafted him as their nominee. He was the first military leader to become president without hold a political office previously. He realized he lacked experience so he sought advice from others, but his decisions were always based on his perception of each situation. Slaver and the extension of slavery in the newly acquired western land were the main issues of his term. They were never resolved however, because he died suddenly after only sixteen months in office.” On Line Lesson Plans: Zachary Taylor Polk from TeacherVision

Military Career. In 1808 Taylor joined the regular army as an infantry officer. After distinguishing himself under William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812 and briefly returning to civilian life, he saw active duty on various frontier posts in the Northwest and Louisiana, where he established a second home. He participated in the Black Hawk and Second Seminole wars and in 1838 defeated the Seminole in the Battle of Lake Okeechobee. Although not decisive, this engagement earned him promotion to the rank of brigadier general, and he was given overall command of the campaign against the Seminole in Florida.
Political Career. top Taylor, who had never bothered to vote, had little political experience, but he had quarreled with President James K. Polk and sympathized with the Whigs, and thus seemed a perfect candidate for the opposition. Although he declared himself nonpartisan and was a slave owner, which might have made him unpopular in the North, the Whig party nominated him for the presidency in 1848. In the ensuing election, he defeated both his Democratic and Free-Soil opponents.
Taylor was an adequate but by no means brilliant general, who reached the presidency without preparation at a critical moment. Whether, as has been suggested, a continuation of his hard-line policy toward the South might have prevented the American Civil War will never be known.

Zachary Taylor DeMar
One of the pioneer families of present day Indian Hill was the DeMar clan, and their youngest offspring, Zachary Taylor DeMar, made a positive mark on all who encountered him. Arriving in Cincinnati in 1828 from Maryland, the extended DeMar family moved to the hill in 1833, where relatives built homes on Walton Creek Rd., DeMar Rd., and the corner of Miami and Graves Rd. James and Jane DeMar constructed a log cabin - basically two rooms and a loft - and as their family grew, the cabin was enlarged. Ten children were born to the DeMars, the last one, Z.T. DeMar in 1848, perhaps named in honor of Zachary Taylor (Mexican War victor, and later U.S. President). During the Civil War a kitchen wing was added to the homestead and in the 1880's 15 acres of additional farmland were purchased for $33 per acre. Three of Zachary's brothers (James, Isaac, and John) served in the Union Army during the Civil War, after enlisting and training at Camp Dennison, leaving Zachary (age 12) at home. Two of the young men did not survive, and John's grave at Armstrong Chapel Cemetery is designated as that of a Civil War veteran.

Washington, D. C. Early Years:
Taylor had little or no formal education, except for a small school in Louisville, Kentucky. He worked on his father's plantation until he was 23. He won notoriety as an Indian fighter and became a national hero in the war against Mexico in 1846. His Presidency: The nation was in crisis over slavery, and Taylor opposed a compromise in the face of Southern threats of secession (to leave the Union). The chief accomplishment of his administration was the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty with Great Britain, guaranteeing that neither Britain nor the U. S. would have exclusive control over any future canal through Central America. His Life: Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise.
