Zachary Taylor Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise. Born in Virginia in 1784, he was taken as an infant to Kentucky and raised on a plantation. He was a career officer in the Army, but his talk was most often of cotton raising. His home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he owned a plantation in Mississippi. But Taylor did not defend slavery or southern sectionalism; 40 years in the Army made him a strong nationalist.

ZACHARY TAYLOR 12th U.S. President A hero of the war with Mexico in 1846, Zachary Taylor was the first U.S. President who was "regular army". Nicknamed "Old Rough and Ready" while in the army, Taylor was not so tough as president. He was nominated by the Whigs and elected because of his military reputation and southern roots, not because of his politics, whatever they may have been. He died after a five-day illness, having served just sixteen months in office. He was replaced by Millard Fillmore
Extra credit : Because he spent much of his adult life soldiering, Taylor did not vote until he was 62 years old.

    Zachary Taylor
12th President of the U.S. (March, 1849-July, 1850) and General, United States Army. Autograph Letter Signed as General with military content, on the eve of war with Mexico. Two pages, quarto, Corpus Christi, Texas, October 15, 1845, with address overleaf addressed in Taylor's hand to: "Messrs. Mannsil White & Co. Merchants New Orleans ". Three months after Congress voted for the annexation of Texas (March 1st, 1845), Taylor, in command of the U. S. forces in the Southwest, was ordered to Texas to take up a position along the Rio Grande River. He and the U.S. Army of Observation arrived at Corpus Christi at the end of July, 1845. Mixing business with politics, he writes of the fluctuation in cotton prices and his hope that the presence of U.S. troops could deter conflict over the growing crisis with Mexico. The Mexican government had increased its armed forces along the Texas border in order to resist annexation. War would breakout the following spring when Mexican troops attacked a Taylor patrol along the Rio Grande near Matamoros. Taylor pens (in part): "…All the troops intended for this service or the defence of Texas, have arrived, & our morning report show a force of 3845 present & near two hundred on detachment rank & file, of first rate troops, well officered & appointed in every respect & ready for any duty that may be required of them -
