However, it wasn't officially recognized as a means of self-defense until the 1950s, when many Koran martial artists came together and unified their techniques under a single style of fighting with the hands and feet. Taekwondo is the most recognized Korean martial art and is a popular international sport. It was a demonstration sport at the 1988 and 1992 Summer Games and will make its premier as a medal sport at the Sydney Olympics.

OLYMPIC HISTORY Taekwondo held its inaugural world championships in 1973 and was first seen at the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in Seoul, in 1988. It was back as a demonstration four years later at Barcelona in 1992 but was not part of the 1996 Games. In Sydney it assumes full Olympic status as one of two new sports, alongside triathlon. South Korea and North Korea dominate the sport, though other Asian nations and some Europeans are fast-improving. South Korean men and women dominated the world championships last year, when Jong-Il Yoon, the South Korean flyweight, and Wang Su, the Chinese bantamweight, respectively won the men's and women's "Most Valuable Player" awards.

Taekwondo History
The origin of Taekwondo traces back to the three kingdoms of Koguryo (37 BC-668 AD), Paekche (18 BC-600 AD), and Silla (57 BC-936 AD). Archaeological findings (mural paintings on the royal tombs of the Koguryo dynasty, the stone sculptures of pagadas of temples of the Silla period, and documents written in the Paekche dynasty) showed fighting stances, skills, and formalized movements similar to today's Tae Kwon Do styles and forms.
The modern period of Taekwondo began with the liberation of Korea in 1945 after World War II. Korea wanted to eliminate Japanese influences (in martial arts) and began to unite the various martial arts schools (Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. In 1965, the name Tae Kwon Do was chosen to represent this unified style of Korean martial arts.
Chronological Achievements of Tae Kwon Do
  • 1972 - Construction of Kukkiwon was completed.
  • 1973 - World Taekwondo Federation created.
  • 1973 - The first World Taekwondo Championships were held (biannual event).
  • 1974 - The first Asian Taekwondo Championships were held (biannual event).

Taekwondo is a martial art independently developed over 20 centuries ago in Korea. Over the many years it has become a popular international sport. The main feature of Taekwondo is that it is a free-fighting combat sport using the bare hands and feet to repel the opponent. Taekwondo literally means the way of kicking and punching . It consists of sharp strong angular movements with free flowing circular movements to produce a balance of beauty and power. With the addition of Taekwondo's trademark kicking techniques it is a complete system of self defense and personal improvement. All of its activities are based on the defensive attitude that originally developed for protection against enemy attacks.
The most important fact about Taekwondo is that it is not only a superior art of self-defense , but of the mind as well. It gives its practitioners self-confidence that provides an advantage over weaker opponents. This mental characteristic along with the physical ability is beneficial to the mental life of individuals as well as to their families and friends. With its practical means of self defense, its complete regiment of physical conditioning, and its aid to improved concentration and mental performance, Taekwondo offers a

The first historical indications of unarmed self defence or martial arts are found in ancient India at about 2,600 B.C. These techniques likely complemented the use of weapons, and provided self defence tools against other people and animals. These Indian unarmed self defence techniques were brought to China in about 525 A.D. by Buddhist monks and evolved into what we know today as Kung Fu. Chinese martial arts spread to Okinawa in the 1400s, and Okinawan martial arts spread to Japan in the 1800s, evolving into what we know today as Karate.
The modern period of Taekwondo began with the defeat of the Japanese and the liberation of Korea in 1945. Korean martial arts masters wanted to eliminate Japanese influences. They began discussions on how to return to the traditional Taekyon based Korean martial arts and on how to unite the various martial arts schools (or Kwans) and styles into a single style and national sport. After several years of discussions, the name "Taekwondo" was chosen in April 1955 by the board of masters of the various Kwans, and the kwans started to unify through the late 1950s.
1961 saw the creation of the Korea Taesoodo Association, which changed its name to Korea Taekwondo Association in 1965.

The History of Taekwondo
Taekwondo was originally the national martial art of Korea, it is now an international art and sport. Tae means "to strike with the feet."
Kwon means "destroying with the hand or the fist."
Do means "way" or "method."
At this writing, Taekwondo has over 100 million students in more than 115 countries around the world. Taekwondo is believed to be one of the oldest Oriental arts of unarmed self-defense. It was widely practiced during Korea's Three Han era, 300 years before Christ. In 1935, a team of Japanese archaeologists unearthed a royal tomb of the Korean Koguryo dynasty and found a mural believed to have been painted between 3 A.D. and 427 A.D. The mural clearly depicts men practicing primitive forms of Taekwondo, then called Soo Bak "punching and butting." The art was refined and perfected during the Silla dynasty, which began in southeastern Korea in 57 B.C., and was incorporated into the discipline of Hwarang Do "the way of the flower of youth." In this way, Taekwondo became part of the ethical, mental, and physical philosophy of the young men who were trained to become the ruling backbone of Korea. Hwarang Do was much more than simply a martial discipline. It combined civic duty with personal morality and the building of a deep spiritual consciousness rooted in ancient philosophical principles.

  • 1973 - World Taekwondo Federation created.
  • 1975 - General Association of International Sports Federations recognizes the WTF.
  • 1976 - Taekwondo accepted as a Consul International du Sport Militaire sport (world level military sports organization).

Korea was controlled by the Japanese from 1909 (the year of Korea’s occupation by the Japanese) until 1945 (the year of Korea’s liberation). During this time, the Korean martial arts were under ban by the Japanese Resident General. Nevertheless, these arts continued to be studied in secret, especially in Buddhist monasteries, in remote, mountainous regions; in this way, some Koreans kept alive their native subak and taekyon. Meanwhile, other Koreans, studying or working in Japan and China, became familiar with karate and kung fu, and began to blend them with their own martial arts. In 1945, with Korea’s liberation, the first of several martial arts kwans ("schools") was established in Korea: the five kwans considered to be original ones were all established in 1945 and 1946. Three more, all major, were established later, in 1953 and 1954: one of these was oh do kwan, founded by general Choi Hong Hi and an associate; and another was ji do kwan (ji "knowledge/wisdom," do "way/art of," kwan "school": "wisdom-way school," or "kwan of the way of knowledge"), founded by Gae Byang Yun. (Later on, still other kwans were established.) In 1955, at a conference of kwan masters, historians, and taekyon promoters, the name Taekwondo—a name coined and formally suggested by General Hi—was adopted as the name for Korea’s martial art. It was adopted because it describes both foot and hand techniques which the Korean martial art employs, and because it is similar to the name taekyon, and therefore stresses continuity in Korean martial arts.

History of Taekwondo During the Koryo dynasty, founded in 918 A.D., and the Yi dynasty that followed it, Taekwondo, then known as Subak, was not only practiced as a skill to improve health and as a sports activity but was also encouraged as a martial art of considerably high virtue. Subak is believed to have gained its greatest popularity during the reign of King Uijong, between1147 and 1170 A.D. This period roughly corresponds to the Chinese Sung and Ming dynasties, during which Chinese Kung fu became widely popular. Taekwondo, however, is purely Korean in origin, having achieved independent development throughout the long history of Korea. At the turn of the twentieth century, the ruling Japanese occupiers of Korea outlawed Taekwondo. It then went underground, where people practiced it secretly and once again kept it alive. In 1954, when Korea was liberated from the Japanese, a number of Korean who was interested in Taekwondo took steps to revitalize this ancient and traditional martial art. About ten schools were founded by masters with different particular philosophies and different emphases on techniques to express their difference in style. Between the period of the Japanese occupation and the Korean war, from the turn of the century to 1950, the name for the Korean martial art changed several times. It was first known as Kon Soo (empty hand), the Tang Soo (Tang hand), the Hwarang Do (warrior spirit), and then Tae Kyun (kicking punching).

The origin of taekwondo goes back to the era of the ancient tribal states. During religious ceremonies such as younggo (a spirit -invoking drumming), tongmaeng (a sort of thanksgiving ceremony in autumn), and much'on(Dance to Heaven), a unique exercise was performed for physical training. With this historical background, t'aekkyon(an old name for taekwondo) has taken the status of Korean traditional martial art. The oldest evidence of taekwondo is on the mural painting in muyongch'ong(Tomb of the Dancers) - one of the tombs of Koguryo days. Subak(another old name for taekwondo) was practiced in Shilla in order to reinforce national development, and was the basic martial art of the hwarang-do(Flower of Young Corps). The people of Paekje -the rest of three ancient kingdoms, were invited to Japan by the Japanese government in order to join the sangbak (another old name of taekwondo) contest according to ilbonsugi(Japanese history book). It shows that Paekje as an advanced country thaught the martial art to Japan. Taekwondo in the Middle Ages

A Brief History of Taekwondo By Ronald A. Southwick The name Taekwondo is derived from the Korean word "Tae" meaning foot, "Kwon" meaning fist and "Do" meaning way of. So, literally Taekwondo means "the way of the foot and fist". The name Taekwondo, however, has only been used since 1955 while the arts' roots began 2,300 years ago in Korea. Known as a martial art and way of life, the evolution of Taekwondo was a direct result of the happenings in Korea long ago, and knowledge of the history is an important step in understanding Taekwondo. Early Korea: Korean history began when in 2333 B.C. the legendary national founder, Tangun, founded "Old Korea" at Asadal. As in the histories of other nations, communal life was gradually transformed into tribal communities, and then tribal leagues and finally took the form of a state. Although no written history of the fighting systems of this time remains it is known that the people of this time were hunters and had some means of protection as well as livelihood. The Three Kingdoms: During the 6th century A.D. what we now call the Korean peninsula was divided into three kingdoms; Koguryo, Paekje and Silla.
