You're unlikely to hear traditional Arab tunes on the streets of Damascus, but you will find an interesting hybrid of Arab-style singers backed up by orchestras of western and traditional instruments everywhere you go. Some of the favourite artists are Mayada al-Hanawi and Asala Nasri. The Bedouin are still hanging on to their musical traditions, with groups of men singing trance-like chants to accompany a lone belly dancer. Visual art in the Arab world often means architecture, largely because Islam forbids the depiction of living things. Throughout Syria you will find some spectacular ancient and classical sites, with relics left by the Muslim caliphs, the Romans and the Byzantines. There are also plenty of religious works left behind by the Crusaders. The Qur'an is one of the finest examples of classical Arabic writing; the Al-Mu'allaqaat is an even older collection of Arab poetry. Toward the end of the 10th century, Syria was the focal point of one last great flash of Arab poetry - the most notable works of this era were penned by Al-Mutanabbi (who considered himself a prophet) and Abu Firas al-Hamdani. One of the best known works of Arab literature is Alf Layla wa Layla (A Thousand and One Nights), a collection of tales from several centuries and countries. Bedouin artworks include silver jewellery, colourful textiles and a wide range of knives.

Syria is the only Mediterranean partner to have culture a priority in national program
Syria Regional European Union, Culture, 12/24/1998 Ann Charlotte Bournoville is the European Commission official in charge of culture, audio visual and information within the framework of the Barcelona process, at the EC Directorate for External Relations-Mediterranean.
When asked to describe the Euro-Mediterranean cultural partnership, Ann Chalotte Bournoville begins by stressing a paradox. She noted "Although the Mediterranean's foremost product over thousands of years has been culture, cultural cooperation at the Euro-Mediterranean level was a ground-breaker for the Barcelona Conference. Therefore, the fact that culture was included among the areas of cooperation is a mini-revolution in itself.
"In practice this means that in 1995, the people were not used to working together at Euro-Mediterranean level and there was little experience at community level in dealing with issues of this nature," she said.
Another side of the paradox is that bilateral cooperation between the Union and each of the 12 Mediterranean partners in the field of culture is still very little developed.

Syrians place a high degree on tradition and present themselves well both at home and abroad. It is normal to find Syrian families all over the world who still live there lives as if they were in the Old Country. Syria is a living folklore. The Syrian's taste for the traditional arts continues undiminished. It is expressed in dances such as the famous al-Samah, the Dabkes in all their variations and the sword dance, to name but a few. Marriage ceremonies and the birth of children are occasions for the lively demonstration of folk customs. Traditional Houses of the Old Cities in Damascus, Aleppo and the other Syrian cities are preserved and traditionally the living quarters are arranged around one or more courtyards, typically with a fountain in the middle supplied by spring water, and decorated with citrus trees, grape vines, and flowers arranged for the comfort of the family and entertaining guests. The aura and ambiance of this atmosphere is quite breathtaking and relaxing.

Syria Syria is a country in ruins. The place is full of them: wall-to-wall walls, cast-aside castles, teetering teatros and fallen-down fortresses. Syria has squirmed under the thumb of empire builders from Rome, Persia, Egypt, Turkey and Babylon, and every last one of them has left their architectural tag on the place. The vestiges of Roman Palmyra are one of the Middle East's top sites, and Syria also lays claim to the longest-occupied city, the spunkiest Crusader castle, the best preserved Roman theatre and the monument to the silliest martyr. Admittedly, Syria is still on the US State Department's list of the seven countries sponsoring terrorism, but don't let that put you off. The Syrian government may not be among the world's most benevolent, but the Syrian people are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality. Once you get used to the general weirdness of being in another culture, you'll probably feel safer in Syria than you do at home as long as you keep abreast of world events that may increase tensions and avoid demonstrations and political gatherings.
    Warning
The escalating war in Israel and the Palestinian Territories has unsettled the whole region and the possibility remains that the conflict may spread. Syrian-backed Hezbollah guerillas in southern Lebanon have been exchanging fire with Israeli troops along the border. Although Syria says Lebanon dose not intend to 'open a new front' the situation remains volatile.

Syria Time and Date Syria Culture Back to Top Long periods of foreign rule contributed little to the development of a national culture. Education was confined to a few, who maintained the country's ancient libraries and manuscripts. After independence in 1946, a new cultural life began to stir, mostly through the medium of a small number of clubs that received some financial assistance from the state. The Ministry of Culture and National Guidance has been active in directing and promoting the nation's cultural life. An important objective has been the affirmation of the Arab national character in the face of foreign cultural influences The artistic representation of animal or human life is proscribed by Islam. Until World War I, figurative art was restricted to geometric designs as manifest in the arts of arabesque and calligraphy, which decorate most palaces and mosques. Following World War I, drawing was taught in the schools, and talented artists began to emerge. There is a faculty of fine arts at the University of Damascus. Syrian artists are concerned more with content than with form or style.
