The Kobza
The history of the kobza can be traced back to 6th century Greek chronicles and it was often mentioned by wandering Arab scholars who visited Rus' in the 10-11th centuries. The term itself is thought to be of Middle Eastern extraction and was thought to have been introduced into the Ukrainian language in the 13th century with the migration of a large group of people from Abkhazia to the Poltava region. The term came to differentiate this instrument from other string instruments generically known as husli. The kobza became a favorite instrument of the Ukrainian Cossacks and was widely played by the rural masses and in the courts of Polish kings and Russian tsars. Here it served a role similar to the lute in Western Europe. Unfortunately, the kobza, like its close cousin the lute, fell into disuse and was gradually replaced by the bandura, guitar and mandolin. The term kobza later became a synonym for the bandura. The instrument kobza was traditionally carved out of a single piece of wood and consisted of a soundboard with strings strung across it. The number of strings could vary from three to eight. Occasionally it would have frets made of gut, and three to four additional strings strung along the soundboard. The strings were either plucked with a plectrum or with the ends of the fingers.

Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Baroque Musical Instruments The String Instruments
Bowed Instruments
Viol
(It. viola di gamba): This popular family of instruments, which was made in four common sizes, evolved from the medieval fiddle by about 1500. It developed quite separately from the violin family, and fell from popularity during the 18th century. Viols differ physically from the violin family in that they have six (instead of four) gut strings, have gradually sloping shoulders and flat backs, and are fretted. Also, they are bowed with the palm forward, are tuned differently and are normally played without vibrato. They are help between the legs, hence the Italian name which translates as "viol of the leg."
Rebec
A very early member of the violin family usually characterized by a simple gourd shape and a curved back, having 3 strings and a typically nasal tone.
Violin
Emerged as a distinct instrument in the 1500's, almost immediately reached the classical period of production, and has survived virtually unchanged to the present.
Hurdy Gurdy
An instrument dating from medieval times, whose strings are put in motion by a rotating rosined wheel operated by a handle at the lower end of the body. Usually had drone strings which sounded continuously, in combination with a key-operated melody string.

Welcome to Miller Marketing's String Instrument Website. The violins and violas in this site are being offered at rock bottom prices, due to the fact that I would like to liquidate my inventory so I can focus on the other product categories that I offer at my main website. Miller Marketing was started in 1983 as a manufacturers representative company, but has evolved into a marketing firm dedicated to the Double Reed market. I am a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music in 1973 in Bassoon ... a student of Sol Schoenbach. The string instruments offered here are a result of my musical contacts in mainland China thru Dr. Schoenbach. They represent outstanding value because they are offered at direct import prices. They are made at the Shanghai Conservatory by the teachers of instrument making. The Conservatory uses the funds from the sale of the instruments to offset the costs of running the school. They have been appraised by Moennig's in Philadelphia and other local Philadelphia area luthiers at prices ranging from $600 to $2500 for instruments that I am offering at $199 to $699.

Melodic Instruments String Instruments Traditional Omani funun include the following three string instruments:
1. Tanbura
2. Rababa
3. Ud 1. Tanbura The tanbura is one of the most important string instruments presently used in the Sultanate. It hasn't changed over thousands of years on its journey through different cultures and it is easy to follow the historical traces which prove this. This instrument appeared for the first time in the Sumerian civilization in 2700BC. Then it moved through the Arab Peninsula to the Pharaohs and then, through the Nubians, to Africa, where it assumed a strong position among other instruments. Furthermore, other smaller or larger forms of it emerged. The number of the tanbura strings is 5 + 1, so the tanbura player cannot produce more than five different tones. The sixth and lowest string is positioned beside the first (seen from the top) and produces the suboctave of the highest tone. The absolute pitch is subject to the tuning employed. The melodic work of a tanbura is always based on the pentatonic scale which is prevalent in Africa, particularly in Greater Nubia.

The ethereal qualities of violins, violas, cellos and bass enhance emotional impact and bring audiences to a new appreciation for the power and polish of both contemporary and traditional praise music.
