Then they only have to learn individual spellings for the many exceptions in our complex, hybrid orthography. Colleagues constantly bemoan the inventive spellings produced by their students. Other people are too embarrassed to write so much as a letter to a friend because they are ashamed of their inability to spell even the simplest words. The series of booklets, 'Making Sense of English Spellings' begins in part 2 with a basic table of single syllable words, in five columns under the five vowels. Each page contains words ending with one consonant, from 'b' to 'z'. Each row of five words begins with each of the consonants in order. These tables are paired with a table of words to which an 'e' has been added. By comparing the words on the pair of pages, students begin to realise why vowels are sometimes long and sometimes short. By seeing similar words written alongside each other, they also begin to realise that, by changing a single letter they can write a word with a completely different meaning to the one they intended.
